“For everything there is a season,
and a time for every matter under
heaven.”
This well-known passage from
Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us that
there are different times for
everything we do. Right now at
Kinsmen, as we are cleaning up from Camp Hope and
gearing up for the Fall, we are reminded from this passage
that there is “a time to break down, and a time to build up.”
We are building up for the fall, but there were a lot of
exciting things that happened this summer in the life of the
church: the official launch of our Capital Campaign “In the
Community…for Good,”[1] the Germany Reformation trip,
the interviewing of community leaders to help us with our
Long Range Vision, the formation of a call committee for a
Spanish speaking pastor,[2] the time spent at Lutherhill camp,
the training of leaders for Camp Hope, the launch, three
weeks, and conclusion of Camp Hope,[3] and the
volunteering and participating in the ELCA youth gathering,[4]
Wow! What a summer!
Now we are building up and getting ready for the fall!
Teachers and students will be returning to school. Sunday
school and confirmation will resume. On August 18th and
19th we invite all to bring their backpacks and briefcases to
worship for a simple blessing.[5]
Pastor’s word But there will be some other “building up” at church I don't
want you to miss! Many of the things we are planning
have to do with our Strategic Plan. For instance, as part of
the “Expanding Community of Hope” initiative, there will
be a new Community of Hope training beginning this
month. As part of the “Create a Discipleship Path”
initiative, a group will be going to an Alpha training
seminar on Aug. 4, so they can learn to be leaders this
Fall.[6] As part of the “Communicate our Faith Stories”
initiative, we will launch a small group series in September
that will help all of us share our own faith stories better.
To “Establish a Spanish Ministry,” the newly formed call
committee will be seeking initial funding and candidates
from the Synod and Churchwide sources. The community
partners we are working with on God’s Work Our Hands
Sunday are all part of our efforts to “Implement a
Partnership Model” for our Outreach team.[7]
There are many other things being built up as well, but
this is just a snapshot of the exciting mission and work
God is calling us to do together this Fall. If this is the time
God is calling you to jump in and get involved, we need
you! Let me (or any of us on staff) know that now is the
time and season for you to help build up the body of
Christ at Kinsmen!
Grace and Peace

Kinsmen’s Long Range Vision:
Seek love and embrace all in our community by building
relationships, sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ and
communicating our faith stories.
2018 Priorities:
Grow Disciples and Strengthen Community Relationships
through:
Expanding Community of Hope
Involving Community Children & Youth
Launching Neighborhood Missional Groups
Engaging Young Adults
Building Spanish Ministry Outreach
Increasing Cultural Understanding
Communicating Faith Stories
As we reach the final stages of our capital campaign launch, we are excited to report that thanks to your tremendous
generosity, the campaign has been a huge success both financially, and spiritually in that it has brought our Kinsmen
family together for a common purpose.
As a reminder, the In the Community … for Good campaign was launched to enable us to:
Attain financial health for our ministry,
Improve the facility to serve our ministry needs, and
Implement our vision for the future which can be summarized as growing new worship communities by increasing
generational and cultural diversity, and growing our discipleship through focused outreach and communication.
As of July 14, 2018, we have received more than 176 commitment cards and these pledges, coupled with cash
donations, total more than $1.3 million. We have now exceeded our goal for the number of pledges received, and we
stand within striking distance of our financial objective of $1.5 million. We are continuing to accept commitments and
trust that the Holy Spirit will lead us to the point where we can fully fund our three strategic initiatives.
We thank God for the generous gifts we have received and pray that He will continue to inspire us as we begin to put
these gifts to work In the Community … for Good.
The planning has begun. This year is Kinsmen’s 9th Annual Community Thanksgiving Feast. We will be
serving a Thanksgiving meal complete with all the trimmings on November 22 from 11:00 AM – 1:30 PM.
Before eating the big Thanksgiving meal, we will have the 7th Annual 5K/10K Run/Walk For Your Turkey
that morning. If you would like to help with the planning stages, please contact Lynnae Schatz

It is our tradition at Kinsmen to collect a “Noisy Offering” that benefits a Mission Partner on the second Sunday of every
month. Miles may separate us, but we are united with our sisters and brothers in the Central African Republic (CAR)
through God’s grace and our common faith…and the work we do together to share the Gospel. Our Noisy Offering this
month will go to our extended family in CAR so they might continue to be in THEIR COMMUNITY FOR GOOD — to heal
the sick, establish small businesses, care for their livestock, build schools and churches and quench their thirst with clean
pure water. Thanks be to God and to you for your continued support and prayers. —Judy Biffle
In May 2018, the Kinsmen Church Council initiated the
formation of a call committee for a Spanish speaking
pastor. In June, the Council approved of the members
of the call committee. Below is an update from the newly
formed team:
I am Mike Nash and I am the chair of the Call
Committee for a Spanish-speaking Pastor. The Call
Committee is comprised of Mike Nash, Pastor Beth
Warpmaeker, Linda Martens, Sandra Gutierrez,
Update from the Call Committee Julie Mulkey, Adan Plata, Randy Bratsven, and Stephanie
McIntosh and we are honored for this opportunity to serve.
We have been meeting about every two weeks since the
beginning of June and have been busy preparing our
ROSE covenant which will be used by the ELCA leadership
to select potential pastors that might be the right fit for
Kinsmen. This has been an excellent opportunity to summarize
what Kinsmen is about and why we as a church feel it is time
to send out a call for a Spanish-speaking Pastor. In our
deliberations and our discernment we have come up against
potential barriers and promising reasons why a Spanish-speaking
ministry is right for Kinsmen. We have recognized that this
process will only work if those of us on the Call Committee are
hearing and listening from the Kinsmen community and I
encourage you to seek us out and let us know your thoughts,
concerns and prayers and allow us to share in this exciting
call process we have started upon.
Yours in Christ,
The Kinsmen Spanish-speaking Pastor Call Committee
