KIRK has a great interest in the role that well made buildingsplay in the communities and environments they intend to serve.

With each project we work to make evocative places andbuildings that are memorable and clearly legible in terms of howthey are spatially organised and constructed.

The practice has a deep passion for developing constructionmethods and material knowledge to produce unique buildingsthat respond directly to each client, brief and circumstance.

KIRKs approach to client briefs is not only responsive but alsopro-active. The diversity of projects within the practice hasdeveloped a robust design sensibility and process.

Each project has the same team leader for all phases whichensures the continual refinement of ideas and building quality

and a single point of contact for the client.

KIRK was established in Brisbane, Australia in 1995 as Richard Kirk Architect. The practice has expertise in architecture, urban design and environmentally

sustainable design, with studios in Brisbane, Beijing and Kuala Lumpur.

It is through our efforts in the planning process, attention todetail and an intimate approach during construction that finearchitecture is made at every scale.

Current and recent projects range in values from $0.2M to $1B.The diversity of projects i nclude furniture, landscape, si ngleresidences, interior fitouts, university and school buildings, master planning, infrastructure and urban design.

KIRK utilises 3D CAD & BIM technology in each project toenable better outcomes through visualisation of our designsto clients, integration of building services and detailed designresolution.

All architectural services are produced within a Quality Assuredprocess. KIRK has third-party certification in ISO9001.

    FITZGIBBON COMMUNITY CENTREBRISBANE, AUSTRALIA

The building provides the new neighbourhood with a vibrant, active community hub within a typically Australian landscapesetting.

Situated near regenerated bushland used as an unregulateddumping ground for vehicles and other refuse, the centreredefines and redeems this relationship to the landscape inbuilt form.

The building addresses its street frontage without being sitedon the street, with its facade line modified to incorporate the

rare remaining trees on site. This in turn helps with the buildingprogramme of a mixed use cultural centre incorporating alliedhealth, offices, meeting spaces, retail and community h alls.

The heart of the scheme is a large open covered space, whichforms a gateway on the axis from the new commercial centre ofFitzgibbon to the bushland tracks and trails to the North. Thisgateway acts as a starting and finishing point for the trails, withessential amenities and a retail outlet.

CIP2 is connected to the broader university and arts community via new digitaltechnologies to facilitate the creation of an internationally networked hub of

    creative enterprise and cultural experience.

KIRKs strategic placement of the Creative Industries buildingwas the critical element in the master plan.

The buildings key function as the new home for the creativedisciplines was an opportunity to make a landmark facility forboth University and community. The co-location of diversecreative disciplines provided an opportunity for the building tohave a rich expression.

Most of the studio spaces have access to natural light andventilation, leading to a unique building form with degrees of

visual transparency not normally associated with acousticallydriven spaces. The openness of the building, for a range ofdiverse functions, yielded variable facade edge conditions thatallow light and ventilation to penetrate deep into the plan.

KIRKs extensive experience with acoustic separation andstructural isolation detailing is leveraged to stack the doubleheight studio volumes vertically, maximising ground floorpublic and exhibition areas and provide transparency (throughextensive glazing) into the dynamic dance, movement andmusic studios.

The CIP2 project is targeting a 5 star Green Star As-built rating.

The sun animates the memorials at different times of the dayand year activating the space and marking the ground around,to create a differing emotive experience depending upon theevent that is memorialised.

The memorials design avoids overt symbolism, narrative or thefigurative, contemplated instead as enduring symbols of loss, separation and sacrifice. The intention is for the memorials toappear as though they have always been on the site, wherethey have evolved into their current form.

They are deliberately neutral and abstract to allow for multiplemeanings as well as creating an inherent and unique quality ofcommemoration specific to the events and impact on Australiain the past and into the future.

Passing of the day and seasons are powerful analogies for remembrance andthe memorials follow this notion, formed by the passage of the sun and thepassing of time as recorded by the suns position.

Cuts and slices are made through the blocks using the sunslocation on key dates and times of the important events duringthe two World Wars. It is the process of carving/cutting removalof the form of the memorials that emulates the violence andthe tragedy of the losses and separation. The use of a simplydetailed single material for the memorials Australian granite means the representation of the idea remains pure, powerfuland enduring across the generations.

Located on the Bulimba Reach of the Brisbane River, ArbourHouse is a study in siting and intricate articulation to yield viewsand landscape connections. The long 13 meter wide site islocated between two key public spaces, a historic fig treearbour and a public river boardwalk.

Unlike the riverfront houses adjacent, the dwelling is sited arespectful distance from the rivers edge, preserving an 80 yearold Poinciana tree and public views from the boardwalk to theadjoining heritage listed dwelling.

The large setback creates a platform for a private garden under

the shade of the Poinciana tree. The level of the platform andthe height of the tree and arbour established two datums forthe setout of public and private spaces of the dwelling.

The public riverfront living levels are adjacent to this space whilstthe rear living spaces are elevated to look into the canopy ofthe arbour. The private bedroom spaces of the upper level areraised again to a height that affords views of the tree canopyand river, but creates privacy from the river boardwalk.

The dwelling adopts a courtyard typology with two pavilions linked by a largedouble height stairwell and courtyard.
