REPORTER STAFF

With Christmas just around the corner, the Kiwanis Club of Kirkland is gearing up for their biggest fundraiser of the year. Since 1971, the club has sold Christmas trees, wreaths, gourmet nuts and Sees Candy, with all funds going to support children in the Kirkland com-munity.

For the second year, the tree lot will be located in the parking lot at Juanita Beach Park. It opens Friday, Nov. 29 and will stay open until Dec. 23 or until the trees are gone. Tree lot hours will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The trees are freshly cut with the first

shipment being delivered just before the lot opens and a second shipment in mid-December, ensuring that the trees are as fresh as possible when you purchase them. Last year they sold out early, so be sure not to wait too long.

All of the net proceeds go to programs designed to assist children in Kirkland. They include: KITH, March of Dimes, Music in the Park, student scholarships, special olympics, What’s Next Bowlers, Adopt-a-Highway, scouting, Kiwanis Camp Casey, Eastside Baby Corner, Kirkland Easter Egg Hunt, and the Kirk-land Teen Union Building.

For more information about the Ki-wanis Club of Kirkland, visit kirkland.kiwanis.org or contact Matt Gregory at (425) 828-0231.

Bartell Drugs and Salvation Army team up to provide gifts for children in need

Bartell Drugs is once again partner-ing with the Salvation Army to provide holiday gifts for children in need by collecting new, unwrapped toys during its 10th annual Salvation Army “Toy ‘N’ Joy” drive through Dec. 14.

“The drive helps make the holiday sea-son brighter for deserving children,” said George D. Bartell, Chairman and CEO of Seattle-based Bartell Drugs. “The gener-osity and support of our customers over the past nine years has been gratifying.”

The toy donations will be accepted at all Bartell Drugs locations in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties. Toys will be distributed to low-income chil-dren and youth the week before Christ-mas through the Salvation Army’s “toy warehouses.”

The five-week drive in 2012 gener-ated over 5,400 toy donations by Bartell’s customers—the estimated equivalent of $81,300 in toys to the Salvation Army.

Donation options include:• Choose a “gift request tag” from the

“Toy ‘N’ Joy” display in the store and re-turn the gift to the donation barrel with the tag affixed to it.

• Donate new, unwrapped gifts appro-priate for children up to 14 years-of-age.

Northshore Wranglers raise voices in song Dec. 6

The Northshore Wranglers Program will dim the lights and singers will raise their voices in song at the 2013 Music Project concert from 7-9:30 p.m. on Dec. 6. The event will be held on the Northshore Senior Center stage, located at 10201 E. Riverside Drive in Bothell. Entry is free with donations accepted sup-porting the Northshore Wranglers Special Recreation and Community Inclusion Program.

The music project ties the study of music with a singing performance expe-rience to create a unique program that empowers students. Under the tutelage of Bernadette Bascom, the Music Project kindles a spark for self-esteem, pride and creativity. Each student has the choice of song selection and the opportunity to enhance, highlight and share his or her individual talents through music.

Bascom is the creator of the music project and her work with it has become a prototype around the country for uplifting and self-esteem-building per-formances. Bascom has opened for Ray Charles and performed with acts such as Elton John and Stevie Wonder. Bas-com was the first artist signed to Stevie Wonder’s label Black Bull. For 15 years,

she was a headliner on the Las Vegas strip. In 2011 she joined the Wranglers Program and began to individuals with intellectual disabilities find their voices.

Since 1998 the Northshore Wranglers Program has offered activities, advocacy and support for individuals of all ages with intellectual, cognitive and devel-opmental disabilities. Programs include families and caregivers, offering year-round, weekly and ongoing specialized and inclusive opportunities for all par-

ticipants. The Wranglers is a non-profit program of Bothell’s North-shore Senior Center’s Health and Wellness Department.

All donations received will help support and sustain weekly

opportunities, and help ensure a bright future of fun and friendships in

Wranglers programming. Through a generous anonymous donor all dona-tions received up to $10,000 will be matched.

For more information on the Wran-glers Program visit www.northshore-wranglers.org or contact Program Coor-dinator Cole Caplan at 425-488-4821.

KPC presents “A Charlie Brown Christmas” with David Benoit

The Kirkland Performance Center will host “A Charlie Brown Christmas” with David Benoit at 7:30 on Dec. 2. Benoit is an accomplished contemporary jazz pianist, composer, and conductor. In the past twenty years, he has cre-

ated, recorded, and performed a variety of projects related to his reverence for Vince Guaraldi. Benoit’s “A Charlie Brown Christmas” concert includes performance of the selections from the beloved holiday recording with the Benoit quartet accompanied by a local children’s choir.

Since launching his recording career in 1977, David Benoit’s expansive career as a contemporary jazz pianist and compos-er has included over 25 solo recordings. His ’80s releases This Side Up, Freedom at Midnight and the Grammy-nominated Every Step of the Way are considered influential genre classics.

Among his other Grammy nomina-tions are those for Best Instrumental Composition for “Dad’s Room,” from 1999’s Professional Dreamer, and Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance for the GRP All-Star Big Band. His prolific out-put since 2000 includes several promi-nent Charlie Brown-related projects, including Here’s To You, Charlie Brown: 50 Great Years and the star-studded 40 Years: A Charlie Brown Christmas, that reflect his lifelong passion for the music of original Peanuts composer Vince Guaraldi and solidify Benoit’s role as his musical heir. B

enoit has also released the Billboard Contemporary Jazz charting albums Fuzzy Logic, Right Here, Right Now, Full Circle and Heroes, which paid homage to the pianist’s top jazz and pop influences.

Tickets for this event are $25 for adults and $15 for youth and can be purchased at www.kpcenter.org.
