SCHOOLHOW TO Act IN THE HALLWAYBy: Marko, Madelyn, Brielle and Jake

There are many expectations for students in the hallways at Kirtland Elementary School. According to our guidance counselor, Mrs. Bowen, it is very important that students are aware of all of the rules in the hallway. One of these rules is not to talk in the hallway because it is an interruption to other classes. In the hallway you need to make sure you wear a pass at all times, so that an adult knows where you are. The reason you need to walk is for the safety of yourself and the safety of others. When you are in the hallway you need to stay on a certain side to make it easier for people to pass you. At Kirtland you are always expected to stay on the right side of the hallway. Walk, speak quietly, keep hands to yourself, and follow the directions from adults in the hallways at Kirtland Elementary.

It is important to behave in the hallways at Kirtland Elementary School. If you do not follow the rules in the hallways a teacher might have to close their door, or you might get in trouble. At Kirtland Elementary School there are cameras in the hallway to make sure everyone is following the rules and everyone is safe. You are not supposed to run because you might hurt yourself, you should not throw soap on the floor in the bathroom because you might fall and it is unsafe. The restrooms are a place to go to the bathroom and wash your hands, they are not a place to goof off. If you run you may run into someone else and not only hurt yourself, but also may hurt someone else. If you are loud you may distract someone who is taking a test or working hard on a assignment, which may make them get a bad grade. It is

Page 6: Kirtland Handbook Final - kirtlandschools.org handbook fi…  · Web viewYou can find a book that is just right for you by reading one page of your book and putting up one finger

very significant to behave in the hallways for many reasons.

SCHOOLHOW TO Behave at RecessBy: Timmy, Kevin, Nick and Anthony

Recess is an important part of the day at Kirtland Elementary School. It allows for students to have a break from learning and to have fun with their friends. Each grade gets 25 minutes for recess every day. Kindergarten and first grade go out to recess at 11:05 and go back inside at 11:30. Third grade and fifth grade go out for recess at 11:35 and come back in at 12:00. Lastly, second grade and fourth grade go out to recess at 12:05 and come back in at 12:30. When you go to recess you go to the playground that is right outside in front of the school.

At recess there are many activities that you can do. You can play on the swings, play on the playground, play basketball. You can even play football. The football field is by the playgrounds in the grass that is right in front of the school.

Sometimes recess is inside due to the weather. If this is the case it is either in your classroom or in the gym. We still have lots of fun even if we can’t go outside. We play games such as knock out or basketball. We play with the hula hoops, jump ropes and the rock wall. Recess is

an essential part of the day at Kirtland Elementary School.

It is important to be respectful at recess and to be aware of what you are not allowed to do at recess. You are not allowed to climb on the slides and tubes. You can’t throw rocks at people or at the school. You need to make sure you stay clear of the mud during recess time. If you have to go the bathrooms ask permission and get a pass before going inside. If you bring toys out to recess you cannot throw them up the slide. There is no tackling allowed at recess, whether you are playing sports or not. The slide is for sliding down not climbing up. When we line up to go to lunch you need to stand quietly and respectfully. If you disobey these rules you will have to stand against the wall and will go to lunch last. If you are very disrespectful at recess you will be sent to the principal’s office. Please make sure you know the rules at recess time.

Recess is the favorite time of day for many students at Kirtland Elementary School. You get to see and play with friends that aren’t in your class, as well as friends that are in your class. It is the time when you can let loose and be loud without being disruptive to classes. We always have a good time during recess at Kirtland Elementary School.

SCHOOLHOW TO BECOME A BUZZ OUT BULLY BUDDYBy: Danny, Alex, Chelsea, Mia and Emma

The definition of a bully is someone who likes to hurt or tease weaker people. A bully can be physically, verbally, or emotionally abusive to another person. One type of bully is an intimidating bully. An intimidating bully is someone who teases another person. Another bully is a physical bully. A physical bully physically hurts another person. This type of bully hits, punches, or kicks people. Another bully is a verbal bully. A verbally abusive bully is a person who calls other’s names. Kirtland Elementary School is proud to be a bully free school.

A bully free school is a school where we are proud of the fact that we do not have bullies. Kirtland Elementary School is full of buddies rather than bullies. At Kirtland Elementary School we do not accept bullies as a part of our daily lives. If we see someone being bullied we put a stop to it right way and tell a student what they are doing wrong when it is happening, so that it does not continue to happen.

These are the ways to become a buzz out bully buddy. One way is to be nice to somebody else. If you know someone that is being bullied be a friend to them. Help people out when you see they need help. For example, if someone drops their stuff in the hallway be a buddy and help that person pick up their stuff or if you see someone is sitting at lunch all alone go and sit with them. After you have done something worth being recognized for, somebody has to notice you and write it down and give it to Mrs. Davis. People are always looking for new buddies so be aware that many people are paying attention to you and your actions wherever you may be. Lastly, Mrs. Davis gets the letter and calls you on the loud speakers during Friday announcements. Once your name has been announced you

Page 9: Kirtland Handbook Final - kirtlandschools.org handbook fi…  · Web viewYou can find a book that is just right for you by reading one page of your book and putting up one finger

get to go and get your award and your name is put up for everyone to see.

HOW TO ACT IN LIBRARYBy: Skylar Kasmerski and Megan Yarborough

Library is one of the specials that we get to attend at Kirtland schools. Each class typically gets a half an hour of library each week. It is important to be considerate during library. The dictionary definition of considerate is “caring about a person’s feelings.” Our definition of considerate is to be nice to someone and to treat them with respect.

Pictured above Mrs. Juday

Mrs. Juday is our school librarian. Mrs. Juday has worked at Kirtland Elementary School for eight years. She is awesome and is always helpful to us. She loves working with children and we love going to library with her. Her favorite book is The Heavenly

Page 10: Kirtland Handbook Final - kirtlandschools.org handbook fi…  · Web viewYou can find a book that is just right for you by reading one page of your book and putting up one finger

Village by Cynthia Rylant. Mrs. Juday also believes that it is important to be considerate no matter what.

When you go to library at Kirtland Elementary School you want to make sure you check out books that are at your reading level. These books that are at your reading level are called, “just right books.” You can find a book that is just right for you by reading one page of your book and putting up one finger for each word you miss. If you have one or two fingers up, the book is at your level. If you only have one finger up then the book is too easy. If you have three, four or give fingers up then the book is too hard. You can also ask your

teacher what letter level you are at and find books at your level that way. Mrs. Juday is able to help you find books that are just right for you. IT is very important that you check books out that are at your level, so that you are able to read and enjoy the book.

SCHOOLHOW TO ACT IN MUSICBy: Aidan Marsch, Brandon Selvaggio, Lauren Namciu

One of the specials that we have the opportunity to go to at Kirtland Elementary School is music. Our music teacher is Mr. Witzack. He used to teach in the Kirtland High School, but now he teaches at the Kirtland Elementary School. Mr. Witzack is a nice teacher.

Grades kindergartens through fifth grade have the opportunity to go to Music. In music class we sing songs, play instruments and get to play games. One of our favorite things to do is play games at music. Two of the games that we play are: Bickle Boccle Blue Bottom and Old Mother Witch. In Bickle Boccle Blue Bottom there is a shark that you need to try and get away from.

Page 11: Kirtland Handbook Final - kirtlandschools.org handbook fi…  · Web viewYou can find a book that is just right for you by reading one page of your book and putting up one finger

First you sing the song, Bickle Boccle Blue Bottom if you want a partner just use me. Then, you get a partner and whoever does not get a partner becomes the shark and is the goal is to avoid the shark. If the shark lightly taps you, you are out and so is the shark. The last person sounding is the winner! In Old Mother Witch you sing a song, “Old Mother Witch fell in a ditch picked up a penny and thought she was rich..” and then the classmates sing and the witch sing back and forth. Then the witch tries to tag people to get them out. These are just two examples of the games we get to play at Kirtland Elementary School.

In third grade you start to play the recorder in music class. You get to move in belt color (like you would in karate) by playing a song to the best of your ability. If you succeed you’ll get a new belt color. It is so much fun! The last belt you will receive is the black belt and then at this point you will get to do a solo. This is our favorite part about music in third grade!

Music is a nice break during the week in our schedule. Everyone enjoys going and getting to sing and play games! We are lucky to have it at our school!

HOW TO KEEP KIRTLAND CLEAN

By: Carson Andonian, Ryan Ritossa

There are many different ways that we help keep our school clean at Kirtland Elementary School. If we someone littering or making a mess in

or on the school property we make sure that we tell them to stop and tell a parent or teacher, or that we help them clean it up. It’s important to keep the school clean because the school is where we spend a great deal of time and we definitely do not want our school to smell bad. At Kirtland

Page 12: Kirtland Handbook Final - kirtlandschools.org handbook fi…  · Web viewYou can find a book that is just right for you by reading one page of your book and putting up one finger

Elementary School we don’t want to make a mess because we don’t our janitor, Mr. DeCarlo to have to clean it up. These are some ways that we keep our school clean. Mr. DeCarlo uses a machine called the Viper to keep our hallways and cafeteria clean. The Viper wipes and dries the floor. It is awesome!

Pictured: Mr. Decarlo

The definition of clean is free from dirt. That is what we want Kirtland Schools to be. One way that we can keep our school clean is to pick up paper towels on the floor in the restroom rather than leaving it

there. There are many other ways that we can keep our school clean, too. One is to make sure you pick up trash whether it is on the school or not. We do not want our community to be dirty, either. Clean up little messes because they lead to bigger messes. And last, but not least don’t forget that the janitors have families so you need to pick up your mess to allow them more time to spend with their family. We love our school janitors!

It is important to clean up after yourself and others so that we don’t make extra work for our school janitors that work so hard every day to help our school be a clean place for us. If you see something on the ground or on school property pick it up. If someone spills their drink grab some paper towels and help clean up the mess. If we all help out it can make a big difference!

SCHOOLHOW TO ACT AT ART By: Kelly Faber, Audrey Ryser, Hailey Johnson-

There are many important thing you should know at Kirtland Elementary school when you go to art. Art class is a favorite among many of the students here because of all the fun projects we get to do, but in order to participate in these projects it is very important that you follow the rules. You cannot tip your chair at all when you are there because if you do it might flip over and you might get hurt. If you do not listen to our teacher, Mrs. Davis then you will not be able to participate in that week’s project. You are not allowed to sit next to a friend if you are going to talk them. You cannot throw your trash on the ground or you will have to pick it up and you will get in trouble. These are important things that you need to know before going to art class at Kirtland.

Mrs. Davis with first grade

It is important to have rules and routines in art class, so that we can accomplish a lot during the time we are there. When we come to Art we know exactly how to behave and we also know what will happen if we are disrespectful. It is important to be respectful at K.E.S.

When you get to art class it is important that you know the routine. The first thing you do when you get there is find a seat. Mrs. Davis allows us to sit where ever we want as long as we are good listeners. Once Mrs. Davis knows that everyone is listening she gives directions on what we will be doing that day. We typically go to Art for 50 minutes one time a week. Within these 50 minutes we are able to accomplish many different projects. We always have fun at Art at Kirtland Elementary School.
