KIT CARSON HOME & MUSEUM| TAOS, NM You won’t have to be in Taos long to hear this local legend’s name. Kit Carson was a fur trapper, wilderness guide, and Indian Agent for the Northern Ute and Taos Pueblo peoples in the early 1800s. The original building site of the Kit Carson Home & Museum was purchased by Kit as a wedding gift for his third wife, Maria Josefa Jaramillo, and served as their family home for 25 years. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service in 1963. The Museum’s collection includes Kit and Josefa’s personal possessions, from furniture to textiles and artwork, as well as Carson’s celebrated Civil War saber from years later.
