Creating a Garden Bed tfyou are a new gardener, you need ro get to know the soil inyour garden: to recognise those areas that get the mosr sun and the places that are buffeted bywind, as well as the patches that tend to hold moisture and so on. This way, you can groupthe most demanding plants together and give them the extra care they need. Similarly, y";can position less fussy plants in the driest or more difficult areas in the garden. Lastly, youcan plant legumes, such as peas and all sorts of beans, to improve the soil for future crops (see

Green manure on page 724).Different plants respond best to different types of soil and methods of soil preparation,

so check the sections on Soil type and Soil preparation in the gardening ,ro,., foi each ofthe plants you wish to grow. However, if, for example, you just plant a tomaro plant straightinto the ground, the plant will often grow anyway. It may not be the best possible tomatoplant but it will still grow, so dont be too anxious - just do it. A spindly romaro plant mayconvince you ro read up a bit next time.

Gardeners who decide that their soil is not suitable for vegetable growing (such as a hearyclay soil or a particularly light sandy soil or soil you are .or..m.J -"y b. contaminated)should consider constructing a raised no-dig garden, as I ve done myself (see page 24).

Compost Compost is the ultimate soil improver. \When compost is worked through it, soilbecomes more porous, allowing air and water to reach growing roots more easily. -o-pogalso releases important nutrients from the organic matter it contains as it decomposes.

An easy way to remember what goes into compost is to think of it as a mi* of dry, brownmaterials (straw, dry leaves and torn paper) and fresh, green materials (lawn clippings, kitchenwaste' such as that from preparing fruit, vegetables and herbs, cooked vegetable ,.r"ps

"ndgarden prunings). Dont compost diseased plants, plants that may have b..n spr"y.i *ithchemicals, or weeds with seeds that might survive the composting. AIso avoid adding meat,bones, dairy products or oil, so as not to attract rodents. Never add cat or dog d{pings.Tiaditionally citrus rinds and onion skins, garlic and other Alliaceae family members have beenbanned as it is said that the worms we hope to artract dont like them. I am not sure how thisconclusion has been reached! I generally go along with this advice but dont fret if a bit oflemon peel or garlic gets mixed up with otler scraps. The material added to rhe compost heapis broken down by bacteria in the soil, worms and various micro-organisms.

All compost heaps or bins should be sited on bare soil so that the composr can drain freely.You can buy expensive but very easy-to-use compost bins that aerate the mixture withoutany effort from the gardener or ones which are easily tumble-turned, or you can buy averysimple bin to collect materials that will need to be turned by hand. Simple bins can be madefrom timber, corrugated iron, ofF-cuts of lattice, bales of straw or star pickets and chickenwire. If you have enough space, you might decide to simply start a compost heap at the bottomof the garden, preferably with two or three compartments. It will need to be covered withsomething to keep out heavy rain. The composted materials are turned regularly and movedfrom one bay to the next to make room for fresh materials to be .o-posi.d. If you wish todisguise the compost heap, grow nasturtiums or even a pumpkin vine near by.

A good compost heap should not be too wet, nor should it be too dry. Some gardeners

become obsessed with compost - and swear by their own recipes. If you fall into this group,

there is no end of information available. A good starting point is Composting - the Ubimate

Organic Guide to Recycling Your Garden by noted Australian gardening writer Tim Marshall.

Another book I have really enjoyed is The Green Gardenerby Josh Byrne, a presenter on

the ABC TV program 'Gardening Australia'. Josh advises that an ideal mix for compost is two

parts dry material, two parts green material and one part well-rotted manure.

If you need to buy compost, checkwith your local nursery for a supplier of accredited

organic compost.

To create a balance of carbon and nitrogen in your compost, add alternate layers

between the three groups, not adding too much of the one component. After 3 weeks

of layering during spring and summer (or 4-5 weeks in winter), turn the pile over and

transfer to a second bay - the top becomes the bottom, so the bottom is now the top.

After another 2-3 weeks, turn the pile over again and transfer to a third bay, then cover

with a piece of old carpet (this is known as 'putting it in the oven ). Once the matter isbroken down completely - this will take several weeks or months - it is ready to spread

on the garden.

Hefore You Staft Break pea straw into a few manageable secrions and put them into:- *-heelbarrow, then tip several buckets of water over and leave it to soak for at least two--- - trrs. The pea straw will swell considerably and be easier to handle; wetting also prevents tiny:r:lrnents that are easily inhaled from flying around, and provides moisrure t, th. pl"nt ,oot .

li-,ayer One This layer is necessary if your garden is being built directly on the earth or on:

=a-rsed area such as a lawn. If you are using a fruit crare or other container with a base it

-i :ot necessary. Spread a 5 mm-1 centimetre-thick layer of newspapers (dont use glossy:--'sazines) over an area equivalent to a square metre. The newspapers inhibit weed growth.

Layer Two Snip the twine off the bale of lucerne. Peel off in sections that are approximately- - centimetre-thick - they will separate easily and remind me of nothing so much as:--rrt \\?etbix biscuitsl Pack lucerne sections over the newspaper tightly ,o for- a dense,- ' cendmetre-thick layer. Add 1 tablespoon of liquid seaweed fertiliser to about 4 litres of*-;:er in a watering can and pour evenly over the lucerne.

l-ayer Three Split open two bags of the manure. Tip the manure over the lucerne and, wearingi,:',-es, spread it out into a2-3 centimetre-thick layer.

\\et Hydrocell (see page 725) thoroughly and then mix with wo-thirds its volume of::-inure - that is, one part Hydrocell to two parts manure (I find it easiest to do the mixing::: a sma-Il tarpaulin). \Tearing gloves, mix thoroughly and then spread a 5 centimetre-thick---'-ir oYer the lucerne. Keep the rest of the manure and Hydrocell mixture for Layer Five.-1-r;rnatively, if using Solidwater (see page 728), snip open the Solidwater tubes and squirt- -i the contents. Roughly squish through the manure. (Kids will loue doingthis - just make."':; rhev are wearing gloves.)

JLayer Four Peel off sections of the soaked pea srraw that are approximately 20 centimetre-:rck. Pack the sections tighdy over the manure to form a dense 20 centimetre-thick layer. Add- :ablespoon liquid seaweed fertiliser to about 4 litres water in a watering can of warer (you-'-'uld use the soaking water from the pea straw) and then pour evenly orr.ith. pea srraw.

['ayer Five Split open the two remaining bags of manure. Tip the manure over the pea straw::C. n-earing gloves, spread it out into a2-3 centimetre-thick layer. If using a mix of Hydrocell;d manure (see Layer Three), the volume of wet Hydrocell will make this layer .lor., ,oi :enrimetre-thick than 3 centimetre.

[-ayer Six split open the bags of compost and, wearing gloves, spread it out into:. I r-l centimetre-thick layer. \7ater the compost well. Leave for a few days to sede and then'.:ur garden is ready for planting; any remaining pea straw can be used to mulch the plants'; :hel- grow. The garden level will settle over time, and needs to be topped ,rp r.grrl"rly by:;ding extra layers of lucerne, pea straw, manure and compost.
