STYLE

Good design never goes out of fashionStyle and design are not mutually exclusive; in a well-designed Kitchen they complement each other, striking the balance between style and function. Here are some design tips you might like to weave into your Kitchen design. Consider mixing finishes – having a combination of unexpected materials creates a warm and welcoming feel rather than a sleek and impersonal one.

Materials PossessionPopular material options for the Kitchen include Benchtops - Laminate, Timber, Acrylic, Stone, Stainless Steel.

Another Door OpensMany options now exist beyond the basic Melamine door. Material like Vinyl Wrap, Two-pack, Timber Veneer, Aluminium with clear/frosted glass and plastic inserts offer a striking range of style options.

Get a Handle on thingsThere is simply a huge range of beautiful handles available in various materials and styles. But if your looking for a slick modern look, ‘Finger Wells’ and push to open offer clean lines. So the best style handle might not be a handle at all.

The Nuts and Bolts of Hardware Well beyond the basic hinge, the hardware that contributes to your new Kitchen is extensive, Drawer systems, Handle options, Internal Wireware, BLUM storage solutions are just some options that increase Kitchen versatility.

Make a Big Splash Beyond the huge range of tile options you might consider Metaline or stainless steel to add personality and texture to your Kitchen’s Splashback.

Apply the AppliancesEuropean appliances are the first choice for the Kitchen, beyond the oven and dishwasher, now double ovens, steam ovens, inbuilt microwaves and coffee machines are increasing in popularity. Inbuilt fridges that match your cabinetry continue to be the high mark in style. These compact appliances, such as an oven, steam oven and microwave can be stacked together or arranged horizontally to save space.

Consider technology:Recharge hubs, tech areas, iPod docks and even Televisions now form an integral part of many new Kitchens.

LightingLED lighting is an affordable accessory to generate light in a Kitchen while also emphasising features of your Kitchen. Glossy and light coloured finishes aid in areas with minimal exposure to natural sunlight as they reflect light within the space.

Traditional

Period

Eclectic There’s beauty and individuality in the variations that can come from an eclectic solution. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to mix and match. Have fun with it.

Think gadgets, technology, clean lines and no clutter. Modern Kitchens tend to feature monochromic colour palettes such as white, grey and chrome. Dark cabinetry can be a great way to add some contrast. The modern look requires a lot of storage to give every item a home, keep this in mind.

Think country manor with highly detailed cabinet doors, lots of glass and beautiful period details such as friezes and skirting. The ‘Farmers’ Kitchen range from Advanced Cabinetry lends itself beautifully to older homes and country homesteads. With luscious timber colours like Dark Cherry, Lime Wash and Patina finishes, this range gives a Kitchen an antique tone whilst still maintaining the benefits of modern internal design and usability.

Dream timeImagine yourself in your fresh new Kitchen, preparing a meal for some friends. How does it feel? Does the journey from the cupboard to the preparation area seem smooth? Is there room to put the dishes somewhere while you join your friends at the table? These kinds of questions are exactly the kind to ask now. Because ultimately, this step will define how efficiently your Kitchen works.

The zoneWhatever the size, a Kitchen can be divided into five zones for better ergonomics. These being Consumables, Non-consumbles, Cleaning, Preparation & Cooking. As you are likely to be living with your Kitchen for a long time, consider your families age and mobility into the future. Will it still be convenient to reach up / bend down in 10 years time?

1. Non-consumable zoneFor items used on a daily basis – Kitchen utensils, cutlery, dishes, and glasses. Storing these items in drawers & easy to reach wall cabinets for easy access.

2. Cleaning zoneThe sink, waste bin, cleaning materials, and the dishwasher. An under-sink drawer makes clever and efficient use of valuable Kitchen storage space.

3. Preparation zoneAll food is prepared here, and utensils and small cooking appliances are stored and used in this zone. Pantry items that are commonly used for preparing meals can also be stored here.

4. Cooking zoneThe heart of the Kitchen is centred around the cooktop & oven. Using deep drawers allows for bulky item storage, such as pots, pans and woks.

5. Consumables zoneWhere to put all the ingredients for your cooking is one of the most important elements of your Kitchen. Is a walk in pantry desired or possible, or you can chose one of the clever slide out larder or drawer systems.

Where to from here? There is a range of layouts you can choose from to suit the shape of your Kitchen. A good layout is designed with the Kitchen zones in mind they need to be placed where they relate to the next activity. Correct layout of your zones will produce a Kitchen that is more organised and functional day-to-day.

Is it inclusive? Spending time in the Kitchen is necessary but being excluded from the household isn’t. Consider your layout to ensure that the areas you use flow out into common areas.

Do you have the correct licence and are you a registered building practitioner?

Do you use contracts that offer me legal protection under the states’ domestic building laws?

Do you use computer aided design and architectural plans?

Do you provide a 3D rendered image of the final design to aid visualising the new Kitchen?

Do you adhere to a code of ethics and practice Worksafe standards?

Do you carry the correct insurances to safeguard your building work?

Do you have a warranty for my deposits?

What are the terms of the warranty agreement?

Can you provide photos of your previous work and referrals?

Do you understand if the price can be varied and how?

Do you have a clear start date and a guaranteed finish date?

Remember Above all, you’re committed to your Kitchen supplier for weeks, but you’re committed to their work for years, so decide with the long term outlook in mind. Here are some questions to ask your prospective suppliers:

GLOSSThese high gloss doors give this stylish contemporary Kitchen a little extra bling.

Colour has the power to soothe, comfort, energise or excite. It’s one of the most emotional elements of a room.

Dark colours make small spaces seem smaller. Light colours make an area feel more spacious.

Nature conditions us to expect the darkest colour to be at our feet, medium at our eye level and lightest above us.

Unexpected pops of colour have spilt out of clothing fashion into Kitchens – so splash out on some citrus-hued accessories or even neon.

However consider choosing neutral cabinets and benchtops and use paint and accessories to add colour, as they’re easier to change as fashion does.

Be a Drama Queen. It’s all about contrast, Contrast assists the balance of aesthetics within a space so consider: Warm and cool, Light and dark, Bright and dull, Smooth and textured.

Waste SystemsAn intergated waste system is a must in your Kitchen, you can’t have a bin standing in a corner in your beautiful new Kitchen!

Corner DrawersA clever space saving design, the corner drawer, not only looks slick and thoughtful, maximises the potentially ‘lost space’ deep in the corner of cabinetry.

Switch on your Kitchen

Your Kitchen might be nearly there, but you won’t have much to eat without appliances. Local retailers are a good place to start looking, and it pays to do some research online and check product comparison sites. But saving a few dollars may be a false economy if you end up with the wrong one and a poor fit. Consider buying appliances directly from your Kitchen manufacturer, this guarantees a perfect fit and a perfect result.

Appliances don’t just perform a task, and they don’t necessarily have to be hidden. Plenty of brands are designing retro appliances that are fashionable Kitchen accessories in their own right. And don’t feel restricted by basic white or stainless steel appliances – you can inject some colour into your Kitchen with gorgeous, enameled finishes. Choose appliances that can be totally integrated into Kitchen cabinetry for an ultra-modern, bespoke feel. Or conversely, you could choose vintage appliances and make a feature out of them.
