Bio Data:

Kitty Cupcake is crocheted in joined rounds. This does leave a seam but then there’s no need to mess around with stitch counters – which makes this pattern super easy and suitable for beginners. You just need to know how to chain, single crochet, increase and decrease as well as how to begin and end. Clarification on how to join rounds and thread on eyes are included at the back.

To Clone me you will need:

• Yarn – use any that takes your fancy. You’re only limited by the size of the muffin cup you decide to use. Most yarns made for a 3.5mm crochet hook will work nicely for a muffin cup measuring 5cm in diameter at the rim;

• Crochet hook – use one that is 0.5mm smaller than recommended by yarn manufacturer for a tighter finish (so for a 3.5mm yarn, use a 3mm hook);

• Muffin cup – again, you can use any that takes your fancy, though the sturdier the better. I use plastic lined cups measuring 5cm at the top, 3cm high and 3.5cm wide at the bottom. If you’re in the US you can find them from Wilton, they’re called Summer Party Cups;

• One circular magnet;

• One pair of 6mm black plastic beads for eyes;

• One tapestry needle;

• Black and pink embroidery thread;

• One sewing needle and threads;

• Sewing pins;

• One small piece of white felt;

• Fabric glue or hot melt glue if you have one handy;

•Polyester fibrefill; and

• Ribbon bow or bell to decorate.

Diagrams and words:

I find it easier to crochet to diagrams so I include both written and diagrammatic instructions. For clarity, please refer to the abbreviations box for an explanation of the symbols.

Reconstructive Surgery:

Stuff the body little by little to avoid lumpiness. It might be easier to stuff the body before the last row while the opening is relatively big.

Pin the ears onto the body to desired position before sewing them to the body. I find them cutest with the upper tip approximately 4 rows above the eye and lower tip 6 rows behind the eye.

Cut out an ellipse from a piece of white felt, sew on nose and mouth with embroidery threads.

Place magnet into the bottom of cup, stuff with rolled up tissue until body of cat is perched, nicely propped up, on the cup.

Stick kitty down with hobby glue or hot-glue gun if you have one. Try to put a generous amount of glue on the rim.

Decorate with sewn on bow and glued on bell if desired. Et voilà!

How to join rounds:

To end the first round, do a slip stitch into the 1st sc of the starting round (highlighted in red). Chain one immediately on the same loop, then start the first stitch of the next round on that same 1st sc.

For subsequent rounds, join the end by making a slip stitch into the first chain stitch that started the round (highlighted in blue). Stitch into a single strand of the loop only.

The seam should look like this.

Extend the loop of the stitch where you want to thread the eye. Using a folded piece of wire as a needle, thread the eye onto the loop.

Pull the eye down to sit directly above the stitch, then adjust the loop back to normal, and crochet normally.

How to thread on eyes:
