The main motivation for the Vanderbilt University Hospital Slab Repair and Plaza Renovation was due to the existing 18-inch concrete fl oor slab of the 2nd fl oor mechanical room revealing visible delamination and spalling of the concrete. Following testing and review of the damaged areas it was determined that it was caused by a combination of chloride chemicals from ice melting compounds and stray electrical currents moving through the rebarb and slab. The damaged area of the concrete slab is currently being demolished and a new reinforced concrete slab will be put back in place.

The main pedestrian plaza provides access to the majority of the medical center buildings and also serves as a fi re lane to emergency vehicles and personnel. The plaza is a roof over critical hospital programs, including cardiac catheterization and radiology. Taking all of these program complexities into consideration, green roof components and pervious paving will be utilized to develop shaded seating and circulation areas. The design focuses on way-fi nding through the campus and activating the plaza which connects the clinical and research components of the edical center. Approximately 58,000 sf of the plaza is being renovated to include new site furniture, bike racks, exterior lighting, an irrigation system, concrete planters and grade-level planing areas.

The goal of the renovation was to optimize new discovery through consolidation of similar, yet physically separate research groups. The design of the new lab merged four existing core facilities into a single, fl exible lab space organized around an existing courtyard. The existing courtyard was refurnished to provide an exterior communal space, and the corridor walls incorporated custom-designed glazing in order to provide natural light across the corridors and into the labs.

The existing x-ray procedure room housed aged radiology equipment. The room is part of the large Radiology suite on the fl oor which contains two additional interventional X-ray rooms, administrative offi ces and patient support spaces.

The renovation re-programed the suite to include a larger procedure room with a new ceiling mounted, single plane interventional radiology unit and an adjacent 3-bed recovery suite. Despite the low fl oor to fl oor height, new steel supports, electrical conduits and duct work from a new air handling unit were carefully coordinated in the design phase to fi t above the new equipment.

The new vehicle showroom is devoted to research in areas of new energy technologies and power grid models, making the Illinois Institute of Tech Campus the perfect site to incorporate energy generation as a conceptual backdrop.

The program is divided into two conceptual halves; one dealing with servicing and powering vehicles under the auspices of the on-going sustainable power generation research, and the other for the showcasing and exhibiting the new technology. Furthermore, the split enables the program to take on the entire site and create a campus within a campus.
