Letter from the Principal In this edition of Knight Lights, I wanted to provide you with information on the Flexible Learning Program and Grady’s designation as a Focus School by the State. The Flexible Learning Program (FLP) is a supplemental academic intervention that is required for schools identified as falling into the Focus School or Priority School category. The Priority category is the lowest performing category. Grady is a Focus School. Focus Schools are identified as Title I high schools with a graduation rate less than 60 percent over two years; Title I schools that have the largest gaps between the highest-achieving subgroups and the lowest-achieving subgroups; or those with the largest gap in graduation rate among subgroups. Grady’s status as a Focus School is due to the gap in the number of white students graduating as compared to our students with disabilities in the class of 2011. FLP allows Local Educational Agencies (LEAs) greater flexibility in designing an extended learning program tailored to meet the needs of the school and serve students requiring additional academic intervention. At Grady, our FLP primarily supports students with disabilities, although these students are not exclusively served from FLP model. Grady’s FLP delivery model includes tutoring, remediation and other educational interventions designed to increase the academic achievement of participants. Supplemental FLP services may be provided during the school day using extended learning time before and/or after school, on Saturdays, during intercessions, or during the summer. Additionally, any student from a low-income family attending a Title I Focus or Priority School is eligible to receive FLP services. Focus schools are required to submit an FLP plan along with the School Improvement Plan. All FLP interventions must be conducted for a period of three years in designated Focus or Priority Schools. I hope that this offers a bit of clarity regarding the Flexible Learning Program. Vincent D. Letter from the Principal

In this edition of Knight Lights, I wanted to provide you with information on the Flexible Learning Program and Grady’s designation as a Focus School by the State.

Grady High School Academy Updates

Biomedical Science & Engineering Academy The BS&E Academy is pleased to celebrate recent accomplishments and looks forward to upcoming events. For starters, we’d like to congratulate all students who were recognized during the most recent Honors Program. Over 200 of the 365 students currently enrolled received recognition for their academic, social and extracurricular achievements for the mid-semester term. As always, our goal is to celebrate our students’ many talents and gifts and to motivate others to give their best.

Four of our engineering students, Khalid Ransome, Emma Kasper, Siddhartha Hughes and Michael Spear competed in the IDSA Georgia Tech competition. These amazing students, along with the help of engineering professional Chris Ruf and Ms. Schofield, designed a Bluetooth mobile speaker device, which they call “Backbeat.” The device, which is worn around the neck, has mini speakers attached and allows users to listen to their iPod, phone or any Bluetooth-compatible device while walking, exercising or just relaxing at home. The device has volume buttons, as well as an audio output jack for headphones. Unfortunately, our students did not win the competition, but their creativity and effort will always make them winners in our academy.

In the world of biomedical science, 20 of our students prepared for competition in the HOSA leadership conference. The conference exposes students to other HOSA organizations throughout Georgia, and tests their knowledge of the health sciences. The biomedical science students are also preparing for Grady High School’s Second Annual Health Fair. The health fair gives students the opportunity to put their education into practice by providing participants with vision and hearing screenings, body fat counts, and information about healthy eating and lifestyle.

Finally, as always, we thank our parents for their support of this ever-evolving program. We hope you have a most joyous holiday season and a prosperous new year.

Raymond L. Dawson, Academy Leader: [email protected]

Business & Entrepreneurship AcademyThe B&E Academy congratulates the students in Grady’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Program who participated in the FBLA Fall Motivational Rally in Perry, Georgia in October. The event brought business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs. In addition, our FBLA students attended the 2013 Fall Leadership Conference during November in Athens, where they had opportunities to network with business leaders and promote their entrepreneurial ideas.

Our B&E students also had the chance to participate with Youth Entrepreneurs of Atlanta’s Dare to Dream Day in October. This ongoing involvement with Youth Entrepreneurs provides Grady students with practical business knowledge and experiences that help them understand how to create value for themselves and others, exposes them to one-on-one interactions with business professionals to help them cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset, and supports their pursuit of post-secondary education with an emphasis on productive citizenship.

Willie Vincent, Academy Leader: [email protected]

Communications & Journalism AcademyOn October 30, 2013, the C&J Academy celebrated student achievements in an awards program. C&J students in grades 10, 11 and 12 received recognition for outstanding grade point averages for the spring semester of 2013. Students in all grades were also recognized for outstanding performances in their core classes, electives and theme-based pathways, and for perfect attendance that semester. We issued approximately 250 certificates, over 300 students attended the ceremony, and we celebrated with 360 pieces of cake. Congratulations to all! Staff of the Grady publications and broadcast programs traveled to Boston in November to attend the National Scholastic Press Association’s fall convention. While in Boston, students attended workshops, competed in write-off competitions, and networked with student journalists from around the country. The Southerner was a Pacemaker finalist this year.  Grady students were also finalists for Multimedia Story of the Year.  The staff of The Southerner won Third Place Multimedia Story of the Year for “The Dropout Dilemma,” and Grace Power and Olivia Veira won Honorable Mentions for their multimedia story “Guns at Grady.”  You can find both stories at thesoutherneronline.com.  In the Write-Off Competitions, Grady students were recognized with the following ratings:  Quinn Mulholland, excellent in editorial writing; Eli Mansbach, excellent in sports writing; Kitty Wright, excellent in yearbook copy and caption (clubs); Josh Weinstock, honorable mention in newswriting; J. D. Capelouto, honorable mention in review writing; and Mary Condolora, honorable mention in commentary writing.Very special thanks to Mario Herrera, Emma Watson, Kate Carter, Trisha Kendall, Susie Mercer, Paul Nicolson, Thaddeus Roberts and Dave Winter for their hard work and dedication to the Grady Communications and Journalism program. Additional gratitude goes out to Ms. Mercer and Mr. Nicolson for taking students to the convention.

Law & Leadership AcademyThe L&L Academy is dedicated to providing valuable knowledge of the law. Our teachers, Ms. Barbour, an attorney, and Mr. Bowden, a judge, work to provide students with knowledge in law enforcement and the judiciary.

The academy has partnered with the Georgia State University College of Law. Our teachers are members of their Inns of Court Charter, in which law professors and attorneys from major Atlanta law firms coach students to speak and write with precise skill, and to analyze facts and circumstances. These sessions take place the second Tuesday of each month after school, and will provide communication skills that will be useful throughout our students’ lives, regardless of the professions they choose.

Each student participating in moot court also has been enrolled in an online course sponsored by the Georgia State University College of Law. The course teaches students critical thinking and legal reasoning skills. We are also partnered with other associations to provide in-depth perspectives into the law field. We visited the Atlanta Pre-Trial Detention Center, where students toured the facility and spoke to prisoners about the realities of the prison system. Students also received information from criminal justice personnel about career opportunities. In November, students met with members of the state Supreme Court and heard oral arguments on the landmark case, Warren v. The State.

The L&L Academy shows the exciting side of law behind the scenes, and gives students opportunities to participate in moot court and mock trial competitions. We are excited about the promising year ahead, which will be full of hands-on experiences and knowledge.

Attention 9th, 10th and 11th GradersCollege-bound students should plan on taking at least one advanced placement course before graduating. Grady offers AP courses in a variety of subjects, including art, music theory, economics, U.S. history, European history, world history, psychology, government and politics, English literature, English language, calculus, statistics, French, Latin, Spanish, biology, environmental science, computer science and physics.

Not all courses are offered at all grade levels, and space is limited by the availability of teachers and classroom space, which makes placement in AP courses competitive.

Statement of Interest Forms and the Summary of the Minimum Qualifications for AP will be distributed to students during advisement on December 11. To be eligible for AP in the 2014-15 school year, a student must submit a completed Statement of Interest Form to Mr. Vincent in Room E207 no later than Friday, December 20. You can also find these forms on the Grady website at www.atlanta.k12.ga.us/Domain/3087, along with the complete AP Guide with detailed descriptions of each AP course.

In addition, we encourage all interested students and parents to attend AP Night on Tuesday, December 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the C200 hall. You will have a chance to visit each AP teacher, participate in actual AP lessons, speak with AP students, see artifacts and lessons from AP courses, and learn all there is to know about Grady’s award-winning AP program. While all interested students and parents are encouraged to attend, AP Night is especially important for freshmen and transfer students and their parents who are new to Grady. Please note: Failure to adhere to Grady’s Advanced Placement enrollment process may deem a student ineligible to enroll in an AP course. Apply today!

Attention Seniors!

Senior Transcript and Recommendation RequestsThis is a reminder that seniors must submit transcript/recommendation requests at least two weeks prior to their college/scholarship deadline. This will allow counselors adequate time to process all necessary documentation and provide strong recommendations for all seniors. The counselor-student ratio is approximately 1: 400; therefore, failure to submit requests within the required timeframe may not allow enough time to meet the student’s deadline. We have communicated this information to seniors individually and in group settings.

Please make sure your student adheres to the schedule below regarding December and January transcript/recommendation requests. All requests with deadlines between December 20, 2013 and January 20, 2014 must be submitted to counselors before Friday, December 13. Note that counselors will need to process all requests prior to leaving for winter break (December 23, 2013 through January 6, 2014). Thank you in advance for your help adhering to these deadlines.

Grady Orchestra Ranks Well at Festival

The Grady Knights Philharmonic Orchestra won the highest ratings for its performance at the Georgia Music Educators Association’s Solo and Ensemble Festival, held in Alpharetta November 9. Two Grady musicians, Uzuki Kakinuma and Leslie Lang, also played solos. They both earned highest ratings from the judges. In addition, the Grady Knights String Quartet (Julia Borthwick, Mary Claire Morris, Uzuki Kakinuma and Alice Antia) won highest ratings for its rendition of Haydn’s “Lark” Quartet.

Congratulations Grady Mock Trial

Grady’s Mock Trial team competed in the Empire International Competition in Brooklyn, NY in late October. Fifteen students traveled to Brooklyn and competed against teams from across the country and the world. Congratulations to all the students, and especially to J.D. Capelouto (Best Witness Award) and Griffin Kish (Best Attorney Award).

The Southerner Online wins big in NSPA!

Congratulation to staff of The Southerner for receiving an All-American rating from the National Scholastic Press Association. The distinction marks the first time in the paper's history that the website has earned NSPA's highest rating. The website scored 3,950 points out of a possible 4,000 and earned marks of distinction in all five of the categories evaluated: coverage/content, interactivity/community, breaking news, design/navigation and rich media. In his summary comments, Dr. Vincent F. Filak, an associate professor of journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, wrote, "This site is a great one. You cover a ton of content on and off of your campus. You did a great amount of work to give your readers a lot of information in a variety of formats, ranging from text to photos to graphics." Congrats to last year's staff for establishing a new standard for online journalism and to this year's staff for continuing and extending it.

The Saber’s Rattle

Things are in full swing in JROTC! The first semester is always the busiest, as most major events occur before December. November saw the Veterans Day Parade on the 9th, and the annual federal inspection on the 21st. Many parents and students came out to support us. Thank you!

In December and January, cadets have the opportunity to participate in Santa’s Village, a day helping the Empty Stocking Fund Organization pass out toys to underprivileged families. Cadets can also participate in the MLK Day Parade.

Find out more about JROTC and upcoming events on the Grady website. As always, questions and concerns may be directed to any JROTC instructor at (404) 802-3053. We are also strengthening our JROTC Parent Booster Club and ask all parents to get involved in supporting your cadet’s program. Please contact LTC Johnson at the above number or at [email protected].

We wish you all a safe and happy holiday season. - Your Grady Knight Lights staff
