Grady High School Pathway Updates

Biomedical Science & Engineering Pathway Please contact Mr. Dawson for more information on the Biomedical Science & Engineering Pathway.

Raymond L. Dawson, Pathway Leader: [email protected]

Business & Entrepreneurship PathwayCongratulations to the students in Grady’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) program who attended the Fall Motivational Rally in Perry, Ga. on October 9. The rally’s mission is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs.

Our FBLA students will also attend the 2014 Fall Leadership Conference, held in Athens November 18–19, where they can network with business leaders, promote their entrepreneurial ideas, attend informative leadership training workshops, and participate in fun learning opportunities such as the Battle of the Chapters and one of the world’s largest Monopoly tournaments.

Willie Vincent, Pathway Leader: [email protected]

Communications & Journalism PathwayThe Southerner made history!  For the first time in recent (and not-so-recent) memory, The Southerner published a 24-page edition. It is filled with community news and follows up on stories that developed at the end of the last school year. The staff worked hard to pull it together, as well as to mail off a substantial number of entries to the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s online competition. If you’re not familiar with Southerner Online, visit thesoutherneronline.com/frontpage.

Former Southerner photographer and layout editor Nathan Bolster presented his view of photography and the use of video in telling stories to Mr. Winter’s Southerner class and other staff members. A freelance photographer as well as a partner in Ampersand Creates, Bolster talked about the difference between news photography and professional photography and the similarity of trying to tell a story through photos.

Carrie MacBrien, Pathway Leader: [email protected]

Law & Investigation PathwayThe Law and Investigation Pathway is dedicated to teaching students about the law that governs every aspect of our daily lives. Our teachers, Ms. Barbour, an attorney, and Mr. Bowden, a judge, are experienced in the legal field. The courses in Law Enforcement Services/Criminal Investigations and Legal Services/Applications of the Law are designed to prepare students for possible careers as police officers, officers of the court, attorneys or judges.

To that end, we have partnered with Georgia State University’s College of Law, and are members of their Inns of Court Charter. Students, law professors, and attorneys from major Atlanta law firms instruct students on speaking and writing with precise skill to analyze facts and circumstances. These sessions take place the first Wednesday of each month after school. Practice sessions for Moot Court competitions take place every Wednesday, 3:40–4:45 p.m. Each student participating in Moot Court enrolls in an online course sponsored by the Georgia State School of Law that teaches critical thinking and legal reasoning skills. For our Moot Court clinics, we use a courtroom setting built within one of our classrooms.

This semester, students can also participate in the Georgia State Bar’s Journeys Through Justice, a four-hour interactive program teaching about the law and letting students see up close how laws are enacted in the State of Georgia. Community service credit is available for participation in certain projects. Other outside visits include the Atlanta Detention Center and the National Civil Rights Museum. We are excited about all these experiences. Please visit the pathway website or contact Law and Leadership instructors Calethea Barbour and Harry J. Bowden for more information ([email protected], [email protected]).

Counselors’ Corner

College and Career Readiness Motivation Week Grady’s guidance department, in conjunction with the district’s Career, Technical and Agricultural Education Department, hosts the annual College and Career Readiness Motivation Week, November 17–21. The goal is to motivate students through exposure to and awareness of various career options, and to help prepare them to compete in a 21st-century global labor market. Each day of the week has an event or theme: • Monday: District kick-off, location TBA. • Tuesday: Dress for Success. Staff and students are

encouraged to dress in professional uniforms or attire representing their pathway or future career choice.

• Wednesday: Advisement Day. Teacher advisers will teach lessons on career readiness, including resume writing,

Grady Knight Lights 2

interviewing techniques, public speaking and appropriate clothing.

• Thursday: The renowned Georgia Apply to College Day. Grady’s guidance counselors along with folks from the Georgia Student Finance Commission will be available to help students as they actually complete their college applications. Some application fees may be waived on this special day.

• Friday: Guest speakers from the professional community will be in various classrooms to discuss their careers and how they relate to the pathways students are studying. Friday will also be College Day, when staff and students are encouraged to wear gear from their favorite college or alma mater along with “Ask Me About College” buttons.

For more information, contact Lamar Young: [email protected].

Financial Aid Information SessionsGrady’s guidance department, along with the Georgia Student Finance Commission, will host two information sessions about financial aid. Topics and issues related to college expenses such as tuition costs and fees will be thoroughly discussed. We will focus on ways students can obtain funding for college, including the HOPE scholarship, Zell Miller scholarship, Pell Grant, HOPE Grant, SEOG Grant, work-study and student loans. We will also explore when and how to complete such forms as the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and EFC (Expected Family Contribution), as well as our very own GACollege411.org site.

The first session will take place Wednesday, November 12 and the second one is scheduled for Thursday, January 29, both at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. We look forward to seeing parents of students of all ages and grade levels at these informative sessions. For more details, contact Lamar Young in the guidance department, [email protected].

Writing Center News

The Writing Center operates Monday through Thursday, 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., inside the Media Center, for one-on-one assistance with any writing project. In addition to excellent volunteers, the center also has resources such as writing guides, notebooks of samples (essays, resumes) and books on writing. Last year, students who came for assistance passed the GGT Writing Test, and earned Posse, Bill Gates and many other scholarships. All juniors must pass the GGT Writing Test, so the Writing Center presented several GGT Writing Test Workshops this year before juniors took the test on September 24. We kicked off the year with a workshop on My Life in 650 Words or Less: Writing the College Essay, and more workshops will be scheduled, so please watch the GradyGram. Seniors are encouraged to come to the Writing Center for one-on-one assistance with their college entrance essays. Check out our ongoing contest, First Lines of Novels, for on-the-spot prizes as well as cumulative prizes for frequent winners (example: “Call me, Ishmael.” Answer: Moby Dick by Herman Melville). Watch the GradyGram for announcements about writing contests for students in poetry, short stories, personal essays and graphic fiction. We invite all parents and community members to participate in the Book Club (for adults only), which meets every third Monday of the month at the homes of members. Watch the GradyGram or contact Riki Bolster at [email protected] for more information.

Local School Council All LSC meetings are Mondays at 4:00 p.m.in the CCC, room C224. 2014-2015 Meeting dates are as follows: 11/17, 12/15, 1/12 , 2/9, 3/9, 4/13 and 5/11. PTSA News

Stay Informed and Stay InvolvedCan you believe it’s November already? We hope that everyone (student and parent alike) is settling into productive school routines and enjoying all that Grady has to offer. We encourage everyone to stay informed and stay involved.

If you have not already done so, please sign up to get the PTSA’s weekly email newsletter, the GradyGram. Just go to the Grady High School website and click on GradyGram at the bottom of the links box on the left. The Grady website calendar is another good source of up-to-date information about all the great things happening at our school.

Many thanks to all who have already volunteered in so many ways. There are still many opportunities to get involved in our active school community. We always need help with our parking lot fundraising, and students can earn community service hours while working, too. Notices for volunteer sign-ups go out via the GradyGram a few weeks before each event. Also, on Thursday, November 20, we will host our second teacher and staff appreciation event, a luncheon. Please watch the GradyGram in early November for opportunities to sign up to bring in or serve yummy lunch items.

We are committed to making Grady High School the best it can be for all students, staff, parents and teachers. Your input and feedback are important to us, so please feel free to contact us with any comments or concerns.

We hope everyone has a happy and safe Thanksgiving holiday!

Sincerely,Your Grady PTSA
