SCLEROTHERAPY PROCEDURE
Sclerotherapy is a simple in-office procedure that can be accomplished in under an
hour. The exact time depends on the number and size of varicose veins to be treated.
The treated area will be positioned to allow gravity to help move blood away from the
problem vein, then an injection will introduce a sclerosing agent into the faulty blood
vessel. You may feel a temporary burning sensation or experience cramping in the
area of the injection site.
The sclerosing agent causes the walls of the blood vessel to draw together until the
non-working vein collapses into itself, forcing blood to use healthier veins to return to
the heart. Over time, the treated vein is absorbed by the surrounding tissue, so the
spidery “roadmap” on the skin’s surface is improved. Depending on the size and
location of the vein, several treatments may be needed to achieve the best results.
