Brothers,

August is here and our event calendar is empty for the month. As most of you know our council is very active throughout the year with fund raisers and works of charity. We need to turn our attention towards membership. Every council is being asked to have a membership drive in October to meet the goal of “One new member, per month, per council”. I would like to ask my brother knights, that when you are at church or another event sponsored by the knights, to wear your name badges. Also, talk to the people around you (after mass) to see if they are interested in become a member of the Knights. If you talk to someone that used to be a Knight, ask them why they are no longer a Knight. Or if you talk to someone that says there a Knight, but they are not active ask them why. I need your help to keep this a great council. Vivat Jesus,

Grand Knight’s Report

Knights of Columbus East Multnomah Council # 3179

August 2013 Bulletin, Volume 7, No.4

Last Month’s Council Activities

Report on the Annual Golf Outing showed a very successful event at the Mountain View Golf Course last June 23rd with 112 players and a grand net of $6,012.74. Commendations are well due for all the Brothers who spent their time and helped make the event one of our great fundraisers.

For the Good of the Order, Fr. Zach emphasized the Goals that St. Henry’s is starting to accomplish – which is Evangelization to the 93% of the faithful who are “not engaged”. Three group meetings on gospel of Christian Evangelization is proposed starting this October. Another venue he suggested is reading the book”Rediscover Catholicism” written by Matthew Kelly.

Bro. Duane Ranieri presented and opened discussions on the book “Rediscover Catholicism” by Matthew Kelly. Motion was made and passed to purchase 500 of his book @ $2.00 each and present them as gifts to parishioners during the morning Christmas Mass at St. Henrys.

Grand Knight Randy Paden, now also District #2 Deputy announced 2nd and 3rd degree exemplifications will be available August 31st at St. Matthews at Hillsboro. Details will follow. He also announced that degree ceremony dvd is available for the degree team if needed.

Proxy presentation by Bro. John Freuler was made GK Randy Paden on the “Great Oregon Steam Up” Details as follows; Antique Powerland at 4301 Brookdale Rd. July 14th

, Sunday – A good number of Brother Knights, including Charlie Sabella, Aaron Seiwald, Randy Paden, Dale

Fraser and Bob Ferek started early during the day and set up tables and chairs inside the gymnasium as well as outside. A

large canopy housed the beer garden manned by the Marino’s while another canopy covers the elephant ears station

manned by Tom Barrie, Dwayne Fellis, John Owen and Larry Rose. At the entrance corner outside of the gym was where

the hotdogs and hamburgers were cooked by Bros. Joe Wiggins, Al Gudinas and Glenn Zmuda. All 3 spots had brisk

business when lunch started. Bro. John Snyder was busy running in and out of the gym trying to keep up filling the food

stations for the parishioners. In all it was a very successful parish picnic accentuated by a beautiful sunny Sunday. Thank

you Brother Knights – great job well done!

The Month of August 2013 and Future Activities – Please MARK your Calendars

Knight of the Month of August - Scott Marino

Born on December 3rd

, 1981 at New Port, Richey, Florida, Brother Scott Marino has one

brother Chuck (who is also a Knight of our Council as well as his Dad Charlie) and a sister Marcie.

His family moved in 1990 when he was 9 years old to Oregon where he was raised Catholic in

Troutdale and joined St. Henry’s Parish in 2001.

Scott’s working history includes stints at Microchip, Morgan Distributing as well as being

Vice Pesident of Operations and Decisions at Charlie & Sons Hauling.

With his dad and brother being Knights themselves, made it an easy decision for Scott to

become a member of the Knights of Columbus in 2010. He has been very active with the Council

as you can always see him helping during almost all of the First Sunday Breakfasts and Dinners. He has been the

Council’s chairman on the Annual Golf Outing every June which has been very successful. He also is very much

involved with the Annual February Valentine’s Dance social which also has been very successful for the past 3 years in a

row..

To Brother Scott, being part of the Knights of Columbus meant brotherhood, commitment, responsibilities and

charity and to be part of a great group of fellow Catholic men doing great good things for the church and community.

He suggests to prospective members to come join the Knights and help us make a difference..

Our Council has been very different since getting committed Brothers like Scott Marino. The Council is very

proud of you and thank you for your zealous work.

Brother Larry Culbertson with his military family being in the Philippine Islands at the

time was born in Manila in 1959. He was raised Catholic with sister Kathy together with his

Filipino cousins in Costa Mesa, CA and attended Pomona K-6 schools. Having gone through

many family moves , he also attended schools in Mission Viejo, El Toro, William S. Union

Hart High School, Quartz Hill, Antelope Valley and Rancho Santiago Jr College. Lindy on

the other hand was born in Phoenix, Arizona and attended J.B. Sutton Elementary there, and

converted into Catholicism on 2012-2013 at the St. Henry’s RCIA.

Larry has worked jobs in California, Arizona and Oregon holding a 10-year tenure at

one time with Cherry Rivet Company making aerospace and commercial rivets. Lindy has also worked as a waitress in

restaurants, sandwich maker and machine operator and assembler in a factory. Lindy was giving away bread one day in

November 2005 from her job at Beyond Bread and offered one to Larry who said “no thanks” but she insisted “for my co-

workers”. He took it reluctantly and thanked her. Feeling compelled to return the kind gesture later asked Lindy for a date

at a K of C early Christmas party and she gladly said yes but later stood him up. That was then, now they are two

wonderful couple.

Brother Larry and wife Lindy started at St. Henry’s in 2010. Lindy has been trying to participate with St. Vincent

DePaul as well as the Bible Study Group lectures.

Brother Larry joined the KofC in 1999 because he believed in the joy of selfless charity, camaraderie and hard

work for God’s Glory and to make some new friends. He also believes that the KofC should have more venues for the

family to join to make true the connotation that the Knights is a Family affair. He has been a fixture on most of our

Council’s fundraising activities like Sunday Breakfasts, dinners, concession stands like the Elephant Ears. He also attends

the 4th degree activities like color corp, honor guard lending his help as much as he can.

He suggests that new Knights should not be shy and be yourself, not to hold back, have fun and participate! With

free time Brother Larry likes to play golf when he can, work around the house and rides his bike. The Council is very

proud to have a couple who are true to their faith as well as bent in helping others in line with the Knights goals.
