COURAGE LION PROGAM

Joan Gunter

The Courage Lion Program is dedicated to children who are entering the hospital for a serious illness, injury or surgery. Each Courage Lion comes with the book “Courage Pockets”, which introduces the story of a young lion, Duffy, who faces the challenge of recovering from an injury. Duffy is a therapeutic animal used to enhance communication and is intended to reduce anxiety and fear. The KC Ladies Auxiliary sponsors the Courage Lion Program at Saint Stephen Catholic Community and would like to help each hospitalized child through what could be a frightening experience by giving him/her a “Duffy” Courage Lion of their own. If you have a child entering the hospital please call Joan Gunter, KCLA, at 773-8518.

Recently, the KCLA provided a Courage Lion to five-year-old, Caleb Atnip who met with a lawnmower accident a few weeks ago. Caleb is doing well and his family would like to thank the KCLA for "Duffy" to help him fully recover. Caleb and his twin brother Connor are students at Donelson Christian. Please continue prayers for Caleb and his family.

FATHER/DAUGTER DANCE APRIL 23, 2016 Submitted by: Helen Walsh The Father/Daughter dance was sponsored by St. Stephen Council 9282 and the KC Ladies Auxiliary. The girls were so cute and they had a blast! They will never forget these memories with their Dads and Grandfathers (and neither will the men). Great turnout and great fun!

Thanks for the cookies ladies and a big thanks to all the Knights and Ladies who came out to help: Mike and Sandra Porter, Mark and Beth Heckel, Bill and Helen Walsh, Victoria and John Vatovec, Chip Harris, Bob Young and Jeannine Mackie. Mike and Sandra chaired the event for the Knights, Beth and Victoria chaired the event for the KC Ladies Auxiliary. It was very hard to select pictures for the newsletter; they were all great. Memories in the making that’s for sure.

PREGNANCY CARE CENTER ANNUAL GALA APRIL 28, 2016

Submitted by: Helen Walsh This year the banquet was held at Victory Baptist Church in Mt. Juliet. Sixteen members of the Knights of Columbus and KC Ladies Auxiliary were proud to represent Stephen Catholic Community. Those attending were: Carl and Francie Duffield, Mark and Candance Gilligan, Mike and Loretto Walsh, Dick and Jeanne Mehsling, Bill and Helen Walsh, Theresa Bradley, Bob Young, Jeannine Mackie, Camille Multra, Kathy Walsh and Pam Wegenka. Kathy and Pam are the KCLA pro-life chairpersons and Dick and Jeanne Mehsling are the Knights pro-life chairpersons.

Kathy Walsh, our table host, took good care of us and the paperwork.

Kathy Walsh and Camille Multra Thank you to the attendees for support in attending the banquet. This year the theme was Imago Dei, or Image of God. Dr. Brent Boles, Medical Director of the Murfreesboro Center and mobile unit told us some very touching stories that made a footprint on our hearts forever. The Murfreesboro mobile unit was on-site and open for attendees to tour. The Pregnancy Care Center plans to work towards being able to financially have the mobile unit visit the site in Hermitage at least two or three times a month to provide an ultrasound for expectant Mothers. It has been proven that once an expectant girl/woman sees an ultrasound of her baby the chances of NOT having an abortion jumps to approximately 90 percent.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS 113TH STATE CONVENTION, APRIL 29-MAY 1, 2016

St. Stephen Catholic Community Knights of Columbus 9282 had an amazing weekend. They brought home the Bishop’s award (one of only four given out by the Bishop) in the State.

The Council also earned the District Deputy award, Chaplain’s award, third place for the most money donated to the MR Foundation, the Bryon Nesler award for the most creative funding raising idea for the MR Foundation and the State Family of the Year award went to David and Jeanette Waters . The KCLA ladies did great also...from the awesome Ladies' Program (chaired by Abby Comm) to the vendors at the Mini-Women's Show and to our own Bettyann Tompson for speaking at the luncheon about our St. Stephen KCLA.

Past President Bettyann Tompson and past Vice President Beth Heckel set up a display table to highlight KC Ladies Auxiliary programs and projects.

Social Night Monday, May 16, 2016 Submitted by: Helen Walsh In support of the Church's efforts to address pro-life issues and the devotion to the Blessed Mary, St. Stephen Knights of Columbus hosted a special pot luck social night on May 16th at 7 p.m. The dinner was well attended by St. Stephen parishioners.

Clergy Appreciation Dinner May 16, 2016 Submitted by: Helen Walsh On Saturday, May 21, 2016, after the 5:00 Mass, the Knights hosted a delicious dinner consisting of turkey (smoked and fried), stuffing, mashed potatoes and vegetables. The desserts for everyone attending were provided by members of the KCLA. Seven ladies provided the special desserts for the clergy. Their favorite dessert was placed on a cake server and became the table’s centerpiece. A card specified the type of dessert and who provided the dessert. The intent was for the clergy to share their dessert with participants at each of the seven tables. The desserts and recipients were: Father Pat: chocolate peanut butter pie by Theresa Bradley; Deacon Fred: coconut cake by Lorine Bourland; Deacon Mickey, carrot cake by Mary English; Deacon Tom, German chocolate cake by Helen Walsh; Deacon Steve, cherry pie by Sharon Jakubowski; Deacon Hans, German chocolate cake by Kathy Walsh and Deacon Rob, lemon cake by Jeannene Mackie.

Theresa Bradley also provided a ¼ sheet cake which decorated the front table by the sign. We gave that cake to Deacon Paul Taylor who was helping the kitchen crew. The Knights presented a monogrammed windbreaker to Father Pat and our six St. Stephen deacons and then the fun began.

Did you know one of our clergy is a scuba diver? One was a nightclub bouncer? One was a cheerleader in high school? One was detained for shop lifting (at a very young age)? One did the polar plunge in Detroit (in a speedo)? One came in third in a World Masters Weightlifting Championship? One was a judge in an armadillo race?

It was an evening of a Zing (tall tale) or a Thing (truth). Every table had a paddle and could vote after each statement whether they believed it was a truth or a tall tale. Let’s just say we don’t really know our clergy as well as we thought.

This picture captures the feelings of the evening -- lighthearted and fun. The Deacons’ wives were given a cross as a gift. On the front of the cross were the words “Amazing Woman” and on the other her name, current date and the verse, “The Joy of the Lord is my Strength”, calligraphed on the cross by Rose Wathen.

Mackie from the KCLA. The table runner was designed by Jeannene with roses and a W for Rose. It is beautiful. Thank you Jeannene. Also, a big thank you to the committee that put the event together: Sharon Jakubowski, Jeannene Mackie, Helen Walsh, and Donna Engel. Thank you to our dessert chair Theresa Bradley for all of her support and help. Past President Bettyann Tompson summed it up by saying: “Thank you Helen Walsh and your team for a great fun evening. Great women, great minds with a great idea!” (Thanks Bettyann) FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION IS June 3rd Please make it a point to attend at least one First Friday Adoration this year in the Church at 7:00pm. Come spend a quiet hour with Jesus. Spending time alone with God rids our minds of distraction so that we can focus on Him and hear His Word. Abiding in Him, we enjoy the intimacy to which He calls us and come to truly know Him. What better place to spend some time in adoration and prayer.

FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM 6/21-7/3/2016 The USCCB has asked that dioceses conduct activities again this year. From their website http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/religious-liberty/fortnight-for-freedom/index.cfm

What is the Fortnight for Freedom? Each year dioceses around the country arrange special events to highlight the importance of defending religious freedom. The Fortnight for Freedom is from June 21—the vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More—to July 4, Independence Day. New This Year: Witnesses to Freedom this year, we will look at the lives of more than 14 women and men of faith, from all over the world, who bear witness to authentic freedom in Christ.

What we’ll do: we will have a daily rosary for the parish from June 21 – July 3rd. We will change up this year and hold The Rosary at 6:15pm in the chapel in order to accommodate

those parishioners that have difficulty with the heat and standing in the parking lot. Anyone interested in leading the rosary one night, just let Bill Walsh know that evening. Mission Statement:

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Saint Stephen Knights of Columbus Council 9282 strives to support the improvement of life for all members of the Council, Auxiliary members and their families and the parish community at large, as well as the spiritual and temporal efforts of the Council membership in achieving this goal through prayer, example and good works. We shall work through our shared faith, vision, goals and efforts to strengthen and encourage Council and Auxiliary members and their families in providing an avenue to contribute to the parish community and cultivate leadership qualities among catholic ladies.
