From the Grand Knight’s Desk:
Faith makes all things possible, not
easy.
I am writing this from a nondescript
hotel room in Green Bay, Wisconsin
and I have had a heck of a busy
month, traveling and trying to
succeed in today’s world of
commerce. Not complaining, quite
the contrary. I am blessed to be busy. In the unsure world
we live in, it is so important to remember that we all have
struggles and many people would love to have mine. It’s
all in how you look at things that can make a significant
difference. There are many people in our Council, our
Parish our community and our friends and family that have
struggles. I think that Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent
is a really good time to see how we can help each other
more. I know that you and your families are all wonderful
and kind hearted people, after all you are part of this
wonderful giving Council. Just take a moment and think if
there is someone that could use a little help. Let your
fellow brothers know so we can try to help them as well.
As a salesman, I have been trained the ABC rule….
Always Be Closing. I am changing this rule for myself and
my family to ABG… Always be Giving.
We as a Council have lots of activities coming up,
including our first Fish Fry of the year this Friday night. It
is a great event with excellent food, and will be in newly
renovated hall. It takes a lot of Knights and their families
quite a bit of planning, time and effort to make this event
so successful. I encourage to come and help us serve our
community and make quick work of set up and clean up. I
believe there will be Knights there all day starting at 9 AM.
If you show up, we will give you something to do….. Also
invite your neighbors and friends. It is an awesome deal at
$12 per adult.
We have the annual Shamrock Shave coming up on the
11th. This year has special significance for Council. Team
Talia is hoping to raise money for Talia Freund’s benefit.
Talia and her family have struggled financially due to her
Sarcoma cancer. Please try to come and support Greg as
he shaves for Talia. Also as many of you already know we
serve all the food and it is not an easy task to serve so
many meals. We sure could use yours and your family’s
help setting up, serving and cleaning up after the event.
Save the date…. Saturday April 1st is our 24th annual
Anniversary Dinner. It is a fun filled evening with a great
dinner and great fellowship. We hope you will join us.
There are quite a few excellent articles in this month’s
Newsletter and I encourage to look at all the activities we
have coming up. We have lots of information on many
upcoming events.
We welcomed two new Knights to our ranks this month.
We are still 12 Knights away from our goal and I am
asking that all you please keep in mind while being a Star
Council is not our primary focus it sure would be another
excellent achievement. I thank you all for your efforts.
Bless you and your families this Lenten season. I am
honored and humbled to serve you.
Vivat Jesus

Talia Freund and Family Fund
Talia Freund (our Treasurer, Greg Freund’s daughter)
who turned 14 years old, was diagnosed last year with
Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. The
doctors have told her family that she will need
constant care. Living in a small town (Mazon, IL) has
its benefits, but also means they must do a lot of
traveling to get Talia the care she needs. Gas, tolls,
hotel, and meal cost are just a small part of what the
family needs help with. Doctor bills, hospital stays,
and specialists will add to the cost of her treatment all
too quickly. Of course, as any great parent would,
mom (Tabitha) will be by her side. But, to do this
means giving up the income she earns that is used to
support her family. Dads Greg and Joe will not ever
be far behind, but to do this will mean more missed
work and income. The money raised will be used to
get Talia the best care possible and to make sure her
family can be there to care for her. The following
link goes directly to her Go Fund Me page

Please consider giving what you can.
Sessions start Tuesday March 7
It is estimated that over 32 million adults in the U.S.
(one in 10 people) were raised Catholic and no longer
identify themselves as members of the Church. How
many do you know?
Each Fall and Spring our parish invites Catholics who
have been away to attend our Catholics Returning
Home sessions. One of the Catholics who attended
these sessions had the following to say:
“When I think about my experience, the first word
that comes to mind is "welcoming." I was happy to
meet people with such an interest in my experiences
and an eagerness to offer the help I was looking for. It
was an opportunity to learn more about my faith from
Deacons and others, and to feel like a welcome part of
the Church again”.
Through this 6 week program we hope to help
participants feel welcome in our parish and ease back
into the Church updating their knowledge about
Church teachings. The Spring sessions all take place
during Lent and begin Tuesday, March 7 at 7:30PM in
room 7 of the Ministry Center.
Why not invite someone you know and consider
coming with them to help them overcome their fears?
Forward this link to someone you know and invite
them home today!

LENTEN FRIDAY KNIGHT FISH FRY Friday Knight Fish Fry
It has started – Lent is here, so our
first Friday Knight Fish Fry’s is March 3rd, then
on March 24th and the final one on April 7th. The
event will be held at SMM McDonnell Hall
between the hours of 4:30pm -8:30pm.
We’ll be putting our newly renovated McDonnell
Hall kitchen to a full operational test. No more
having to fry everything outdoors under the tents.
We’re making a few other changes to the menu.
Along with the standard Shrimp cocktail appetizer
we’re adding our Founders Days fan fav ‘Big Bang
Shrimp’. For your main entrée choices along with
the fried Cod, were offering a fried perch choice.
The baked fish is being changed to a Tilapia filet
with a choice of a lemon dill or creamy dill topping.
And for those who can’t get enough of our Big
Band Shrimp appetizer, we’re also offering it in a
Po-Boy sandwich. We still have the Sautéed Shrimp
and paste over a creamy tomato sauce. And for
those not fond of the piscatorial choices, we
offering the pizza, grilled cheese, 2 types of
homemade soups and our endless salad bar. Then
finish it off with an ice cream sundae or some
homemade desserts.
We also like to add a sense of homemade
community touch to the event by offering
homemade dessert. Have a family special dessert,
please consider donating a dessert that can be
offered to all. Donations can be dropped
off Friday at McDonnell Hall before serving time.
To make this a success, we’ll need lots of help and
lots of hunger customer, so please consider lending
a hand and spreading the word to prospect
customers – family, friends, neighbors, lets pack the
place. As for the help, I’ll be starting
my Friday with a breakfast at Rainbow Café at 8
AM, come join me so I’m not eating alone. Will
then plan on starting all the set-up after breakfast,
plan to be at McDonnell hall from 10 am to 10 PM.
Whatever time you can offer is greatly
appreciated.
Have an questions, comments or plan to volunteer
please contact Ken Prigge
at [email protected] or call 630-730-2754.
Thank You,
Ken Prigge

Deputy Grand Knight
Please mark the calendar for the weekend
of March 4th and 5th when the Pro Life
Committee will distribute baby bottles into
which parishioners can put loose change and
then collected to provide money to benefit
Crisis Pregnancy Center of South Elgin
In years past Helen and I have sold flowers
on Mothers Day, to benefit the Pregnancy
Center in Elgin, which has a Van
Mounted Ultrasound machine. The
ultrasound display has been very effective as
women who are contemplating an abortion
have decided against one, once they see the
ultrasound and realize there really is a baby
growing in their womb.
This year, Helen and I will be out of town
Mother's Day weekend seeing our oldest
Grandchild, John, graduating from College.
As a result I am hoping someone from the
parish will help organize this function, this
year. I will forward details with the next
newsletter and the Parish Bulletin.
Please leave a message on our phone - 847-
658-8379 , or send an email
to [email protected] if you can help. I
know it's early, but wanted to send an alert
as soon as possible. Mothers Day
weekend is May 13 and 14
Thank you,
George Jost

Major Degree Become a 2nd/3rd Degree Knight
Please join us on Sunday March 12th at St. Thomas
451 W. Terra Cotta Ave. (Route 176) in Crystal
Lake to learn more about the Knights of Columbus
by advancing to your 2nd (formation) and 3rd
(Knighthood) degrees. This is a worthwhile
opportunity that you won’t regret, whether you have
not yet advanced to the third degree or serves as a
great “refresher” in the lessons taught in these
degrees. The 2nd degree starts at 2:00 p.m., and we
will be carpooling from St. Margaret Mary. Please
contact GK Scott Nejman or Membership Director
Kevin Wright if you are interested in attending.
Father McGivney Guild
The Father McGivney Guild was established to
promote the cause for the canonization of our
founder, Father Michael J. McGivney. Membership
in the Guild is open to anyone who wishes to share
in this mission of making known the life and work
of Father McGivney and of encouraging devotion to
his memory. THERE IS NO COST TO BE A
GUILD MEMBER. As a member of the Guild you
will receive a newsletter and periodic updates on the
progress of this cause for canonization.
Membership in the Knights of Columbus DOES
NOT automatically enroll you in the Guild, to add
some perspective of the 73,000 Knights members in
the State of Illinois, only 7,200 are Guild members.
Please visit the Guild website at
http://www.fathermcgivney.org or complete the
attached included with the newsletter to become a
Guild member. Thank you for your support.
HOOPSMANIA!
I know you will be watching the college basketball
tournament which begins on March 16. So why not
have teams to cheer for? Our council is
participating in the Charity Mania contest by selling
tickets for $20 each. Of that, $14 goes directly to
our council. This is similar to our FootballMania in
the fall, but your teams are not picked until just
before the tournament starts and the rankings are
announced. Each card comes with a seed numbered
1 through 8, so everyone has a chance to win.
Grand Prize is $2,000, but there are more than 45
chances to win!
Please pick up tickets at the next meeting and return
the stubs with payments to Kevin Wright on or
before April 15. You can also send this link
http://www.charitymania.com/give/Y7029 to
family and friends anywhere, and they can buy their
E-Tickets on-line.
MEN’S FALL RETREAT
It may seem early, but we are already doing
planning for the Men’s Fall Retreat. This year it
will be September 21 – 24th. It will be at the Deer
Lake Resort, located in Presque Isle, Wisconsin.
We will begin collecting deposits at the March
meeting and will continue to do so until we have the
maximum number of men we can accommodate.
Questions? Talk to any Knight who has attended in
the past. Stu Kuczynski and Ken Prigge are the
main contacts and will be doing the collecting.
KC Academy Please join us on Saturday March 25th at St. Mary’s
in Huntley beginning at 9:00 a.m. for an informative
session on Duties and Responsibilities of Council
Officers and Directors. Anyone who is continuing
as an officer or director, or aspiring to be an officer
or director should attend this FREE session. It is
intended to assist with understanding duties, roles,
and expectations, as well as planning for the
fraternal year. Light refreshments will be provided
(and did we mention it’s free?). Please contact KC
Academy Rockford Diocese faculty Mark Halper at
773-771-1810 or [email protected] for
questions or to RSVP to ensure there are enough
refreshments for all.
What Should I Do For Lent? Pope Francis' 10 Tips
Every year Catholics try to answer the age old question: What should I do for Lent? Well, who better to pick for as your
Lenten spiritual director than Pope Francis? He has some great ideas for you! Here we selected 10 of his best tips: 1. Get rid of the lazy addiction to evil “[Lent] is a ‘powerful’ season, a turning point that can foster change and conversion in each of us. We all need to improve, to change for the better. Lent helps us and thus we leave behind old habits and the lazy addiction to the evil that deceives and ensnares us.” – General Audience, March 5, 2014 2. Do something that hurts “Lent is a fitting time for self-denial; we would do well to ask ourselves what we can give up in order to help and enrich others by our own poverty. Let us not forget that real poverty hurts: no self-denial is real without this dimension of penance. I distrust a charity that costs nothing and does not hurt.” – Lenten Message, 2014 3. Don’t remain indifferent “Indifference to our neighbor and to God also represents a real temptation for us Christians. Each year during Lent we need to hear once more the voice of the prophets who cry out and trouble our conscience. God is not indifferent to our world; he so loves it that he gave his Son for our salvation.” –Lenten Message, 2015 4. Pray: Make our hearts like yours! “During this Lent, then, brothers and sisters, let us all ask the Lord: ‘Fac cor nostrum secundum cor tuum’: Make our hearts like yours (Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus). In this way we will receive a heart which is firm and merciful,
attentive and generous, a heart which is not closed, indifferent or prey to the globalization of indifference.” – Lenten Message, 2015 5. Take part in the sacraments “Lent is a favorable time for letting Christ serve us so that we in turn may become more like him. This happens whenever we hear the word of God and receive the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. There we become what we receive: the Body of Christ.” – Lenten Message, 2015 6. Prayer “In the face of so many wounds that hurt us and could harden our hearts, we are called to dive into the sea of prayer, which is the sea of God’s boundless love, to taste his tenderness. Lent is a time of prayer, of more intense prayer, more prolonged, more assiduous, more able to take on the needs of the brethren; intercessory prayer, to intercede before God for the many situations of poverty and suffering.” – Homily, March 5, 2014 7. Fasting “We must be careful not to practice a formal fast, or one which in truth ‘satisfies’ us because it makes us feel good about ourselves. Fasting makes sense if it questions our security, and if it also leads to some benefit for others, if it helps us to cultivate the style of the Good Samaritan, who bends down to his brother in need and takes care of him.” – Homily, March 5, 2014 8. Almsgiving “Today gratuitousness is often not part of daily life where everything is bought and
sold. Everything is calculated and measured. Almsgiving helps us to experience giving freely, which leads to freedom from the obsession of possessing, from the fear of losing what we have, from the sadness of one who does not wish to share his wealth with others.” – Homily, March 5, 2014 9. Help the Poor “In the poor and outcast we see Christ’s face; by loving and helping the poor, we love and serve Christ. Our efforts are also directed to ending violations of human dignity, discrimination and abuse in the world, for these are so often the cause of destitution. When power, luxury and money become idols, they take priority over the need for a fair distribution of wealth. Our consciences thus need to be converted to justice, equality, simplicity and sharing.” – Lenten Message, 2014 10. Evangelize “The Lord asks us to be joyous heralds of this message of mercy and hope! It is thrilling to experience the joy of spreading this good news, sharing the treasure entrusted to us, consoling broken hearts and offering hope to our brothers and sisters experiencing darkness.” – Lenten Message, 2014 You probably won’t be able to take huge steps forward in all of these areas. Instead, pick a couple that stand out to you and try to find practical ways to grow in your love of God and your love of your neighbor.
