October 2019 was a busy month for our Council’s different activities. The first activity was the delivery of 300 Boxes of Joy to St. Jude Catholic School on Thursday, October 3. We participated in the Rosary for Life held by Council Mater Dei outside of Wildwood Medical Center on Sat, 10/5. Fr. Francisco from St. Catherine Laboure asked us for support for the Healing Mass with Fr. Martin Scott on Mon, 10/7. Our Social Meeting was incredible. Brother Knights with families and friends gathered together to fill Boxes of Joy to help the poorest children in Dominican Republic, Haiti, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. We started with 43 boxes filled with love and hope and all of us had a great time. 24 people showed up to this activity on Thu, 10/10 and after that, the boxes were delivered to the Drop Off Center at St. Jude Parish declaring the DOC officially opened. Oct 12 was a very busy day. We started the day with the Polar Plunge fundraiser at Chick-fil-a in Laurel for the Special Olympics in Maryland; then the Rosary Crusade hosted by PGK SK Danny Orino and Lady Nelly Orino. Finally, we went to the Columbus Ball at BWI Marriott where the Car raffle tickets stubs were returned. Total tickets sold by our Council, 3,014. What a great effort! Next day, on Oct 13 we had our Annual Cookout at St. Catherine Laboure and had a great turnout, around 40 people gathered sharing delicious food, sang karaoke, played activities and had lots of fun, even some of us had a great cigar. Another busy weekend came by; Sun 10/20 started very early at St. Catherine Laboure with the Olive Wood Sales at all masses at Russell Room, then we delivered Boxes of Joy to parishioners of St. Jude at 10:30 am and 12:30 pm masses and finished with the Soccer Challenge despite the pouring rain. We were able to do it indoors at Madigan Hall and we had 23 participants. Finally, the last weekend of the month of October we had at St. Jude the Membership Drive at all masses, the Tootsie Roll Collection and giving away more Boxes of Joy. I want to thank everyone for participating in these activities. You, with the help of the families and friends, are making a difference in all we do. It is great to celebrate all that we have done, however there is still much to do going forward. We need more members to get involved. We can be more effective if we can distribute the responsibilities to other members. Please consider attending the Business Meeting to see how you can get involved supporting the Council. If you have not been active in the past, I challenge you to find a way to become more involved in one or more activities we have for this Fraternal Year. Please make an effort to support these programs, do not assume that someone else will do it. Many of our activities require a donation of one or two hours of your time. That is all! I guarantee that you will receive more in return. As always please keep all of our clergy, our sick members, all of our departed brothers and our families in your daily prayers. Chaplain’s Reflection

In the Gospel of Luke that was read on the 21st Sunday Ordinary Time (13:22-30), two passages are presented

that would seem to be possibly related to each other, but are not. In the first passage, someone asks Jesus,

“Lord will only a few people be saved?” Jesus does not answer this question one way or the other. But instead,

He exhorts his disciples to do their best by striving to enter through the narrow gate.

In the passage that immediately follows, Jesus speaks of the “master” locking the door on people who ate and

drank with Him, and heard His teachings, but did not follow His commandments. But this was not in reference

to striving to enter the narrow gate, but rather was a specific warning to the children of Israel who believed that

being in God’s grace was simply a matter of birthright.

Since these two passages appear consecutively in the Gospel of Luke, some preachers have linked them to

assert that the path to salvation is narrow indeed. Their argument is that since the master of the house has

locked the door on many of those who “ate and drank” with Jesus; therefore, many will not be saved.

However, the gospel narratives were written some 35 to 50 years after the death of Christ. Except for the

infancy narratives, the baptism by John, and the accounts of the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ, they

are basically collections of sayings that are not in any type of chronological order. Thus, the proximity of

passages in the gospel narratives do not necessarily imply any connection between them.

Indeed, the path to spiritual perfection, just like perfection in anything else, is narrow. Jesus acknowledges that

many of us will strive for spiritual perfection, but even with God’s grace, most of us, including some of our

greatest saints, will not be strong enough to achieve spiritual perfection.

But striving to enter the narrow gate is actually something that we do in our own lives. Whatever our passion

may be, the path to being really good at it is very narrow, and most of us will not be the best in the world at

anything. However, we should always should be at peace if we know that we did our best.

The spiritual life is no different. To grow in the spiritual life is hard work. It requires prayer, effort, and above

all the grace of God. Just as very few baseball players will become major leaguers, and very few musicians will

be admitted to a major symphony orchestra, very few of us will become spiritual all-stars. Jesus understands

this.

Jesus never said that only the spiritual all stars will enter the kingdom of heaven. Recall, when you were in

high school or college. Only one student graduated as valedictorian in the class, yet every student who

completed at least the minimum requirements graduated. And, even those who failed to graduate may have

been given a “second chance” to make up the work and graduate later. All of those who graduated are

“graduates” with equal standing in the world. So, it will be in heaven.

But, as the second passage reminds us, heaven is not a birthright. You cannot graduate from school by eating or

drinking with the faculty and sleeping through class. You have to do the work.

God loves all of us. He does not want any of us to fail. He will give us the benefit of every doubt. While we

should always strive for the narrow gate, above all else, God simply wants us to do our best. Doing our best is

all that God asks of us, and it is all that we can ask of ourselves.

From the District Deputy

Dear Brother Knights, Friends & Family,

It’s hard to believe that we are only a few short weeks away from Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Advent. Our time is

precious and the older we get, the faster that time seems to pass. During my tenure as District Deputy, I have greatly

enjoyed serving our brother Knights, their families and the parishes associated with the 5 councils of District 18. I am

daily amazed and energized by the countless acts of faith filled good works performed by our councils. Having spent over

a year and a half in this post, I have begun to recognize a formula for success that when utilized by our councils – delivers

amazing results every time.

That formula includes identifying a program leader / chair who will diligently work to insure the following:

1) Obtaining the pastor’s support and participation 2) Thorough planning 3) Promotional activity & good

communication (bulletins, emails & pulpit announcements) 4) Inclusion of Knights, their families and

parishioners to carry out the program. 5) Inviting potential new members to join our ranks 6) Creating a program

report that can be used in the future as a blueprint for success.

But above all, our programs should begin and end with prayer. Each of our programs should be an extension of our

holy religion guiding us to put our Faith into Action. As I mentioned, our time is precious and yet we waste so much of

it on pursuits that frankly lack any real value. I don’t mean to say that our leisure time, our gaming or our channel surfing

are not at times, well deserved. We all need a break from the crush of our work and daily responsibilities. Down time

matters. But for many of us (including myself) “MY” time is often just that, time for me and no one else.

This past week, after coming home late from a degree – I was surprised to see the light still on at home. My wife usually

goes to bed early and that night she had stayed up to watch the Nationals in the World Series. As I came in the front door,

I yelled “Hello” to my wife upstairs and said, “What did I do with myself after work before I joined the Knights of

Columbus?” Without hesitating she replied, “You watched TV!”And she was right! So, how has the Knights of

Columbus changed my life? Quite simply, by affording me a near endless series of opportunities to live out my faith.

Consequently, I have been blessed to meet and work with some of the finest Christian men and women I have ever

known. What a great gift those Knights and their families have been! It’s hard for me to put into words. Membership in

the Knights of Columbus has changed my life by giving me opportunities I could never have imagined!

As we move into the month of November, may we all consider the abundant gifts

that have been ours in this life. As my mother would say, “Blessings pressed down

and overflowing.” Let us consider the great gift of our families, our friends and our

faith. And reflect that one day, we will all stand before the throne of God. And in

that moment, outside of time – we will be asked to answer for the manner in which

we spent our minutes, our hours and our days. I would suggest that at that moment,

looking back across the years, each of us would give anything for one more chance

to reorder our priorities and how we spent our time.

As Knights, we are truly blessed to be part of a fraternal Order, 2nd only to Holy

Mother Church in providing opportunities to put our Faith into Action. Whether it

be standing up for the dignity of every human life or celebrating the beauty and

sacredness of the Christian family – we do not stand alone. As we serve the

hungry, the disabled and the persecuted – we offer public witness to the truth of the

Gospel and we do not stand alone. As signs of contradiction to the times in which

we live, we offer our time and our talents selflessly out of love for God, our

neighbor and our country. We stand in solidarity with our holy priests and bishops

and we honor the holy priest who founded our Order over 100 years ago. United with his mind and mission, we

remember that charitable works form the foundational bulwark of our Order. We are not just good deed doers. We are

Catholics guided by faith!

I hope and pray that each of you has a blessed month and that we all consider the many blessings that God has given us. I

look forward to seeing you in November! All the best and Vivat Jesus!

Grand Knight’s Reflection

Sometimes life is hard, but if we feel it cruel, we should perhaps look inside. We have ample capacity to be

strong, recover, and decide to be happy in spite of everything. I decide to be happy. You can do it too.

Think that the only thing that ANYONE can take away from you is the freedom of your thoughts and feelings.

You can control everything, except your way of thinking or seeing things.

* That is something that only belongs to you.

* In you, is the power to choose how you want to be.

It is necessary to face the fears, with a reality that often has nothing beautiful, but in doing so that helps us

define what the response we will give before the situation.

Only you know what the answer to all your fears will be. But there is something that is in your favor: that

EVERYTHING depends on you, you know how to solve the situation, only you.

In life you go through many situations of pain, good and bad experiences, absences of those we love and who

are no longer at our side today. Many are the tears that were shed or that still sprout. Humiliation and suffering

we will have gone through in life, but in spite of all the black that is the panorama, the DECISION is yours, you

can change your environment and paint it with the colors you want. You decide, the choice is yours! If you

only see a cold and gray world, it is because you want it to be that way.

Change is up to you, nobody can live life for you – we have freedom of thought, freedom to do or leave what is

wrong with us.

It’s our time, it’s our world, don’t live a life you don’t want, DECIDE. Do not fall for the mistakes of those

people who never change anything, some things in life may never change, but you can do it, YOU CAN IF

YOU WANT. If for some reason you are experiencing some grief, sadness or frustration, you can decide how

to react to what happens to you!

If you want, today you can feel jealous, anger, hostility, fear, guilt, worry, shame or resentment. You can feel

all this if you decide. Or you can also feel calm, hope, faith, love, joy and many other feelings that give you

stability when you decide to think optimistically and positively.

Realize that what happens to you is not what affects you: It’s how you react to those situations.

For the next few days keep this in your mind, and repeat yourself in the mirror that it is only up to you to decide

how to feel, because when you have the ability to CHOOSE, you can also face your problems. The solutions

are within you. DECIDE to be happy, you deserve it, don’t let anyone steal your dreams and happiness. Only

you can choose how your life will be. They can help you, but YOU DIRECT YOUR OWN LIFE.

Happiness is within you. You have the ability to CHOOSE. Someone like you is capable of this

and much more. BE HAPPY don’t be afraid, God is always with you, never forget this.

Worthy Brother Knights, it is important for us to pray for our priests and seminarians. In an un-Godly world,

we are being attacked by the devil, and so are priests. The lack of vocations and increased press releases on sex

abuse are why we must pray and fast. The times may seem difficult, but that is why we are here – to push back

against the tide and to bring people closer to God and strengthen our priests. Also, don’t forget to send a

donation to the Retired Priests Fund. The collection is this month.

Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity

At the end of each calendar year, the Supreme Council requests a report of every Council’s fraternal activity in

during the current year. The survey is due back to Supreme by January 31, 2020. Every Brother in the Council

can help with this by submitting his fraternal activity on Form 1728A, the Survey of Fraternal Activity. Please

fill out the form, downloadable from: http://www.kofc.org/un/en/forms/council/individual_survey1728a_p.pdf.

You can print the form out, fill it out, and email it to SK Alex Lopez Bueno, the Grand Knight: [email protected], or mail it to the Council’s address: St. Joseph Manyanet Council #5567, P.O. Box 6033,

Silver Spring, MD 20906.
