Newsleer October 2018 KNOCKANEAN N.S Dear Parents/ Guardians, Junior Park Ranger programme: 5 th class are currently involved in this project run by the Irish Parks and Wildlife Services. This is a piloted programme to educate primary school children about their local habitats. Junior Entrepreneur Programme (JEP): once again Sixth class will be taking part in the Junior Entrepreneur Programme, further details of their activities in this area to follow as the programme gains momentum Intel Mini Scientist: This competition is an initiative which allows students from 4 th , 5th and 6 th classes to de- velop science related projects which are then exhibited at school level. We are having this exhibition on Thursday Oct 25 th between 10.00 p.m. and 12.30 pm, where members of the school community can drop in and view all of the projects. The pupils have put a huge amount of time and effort into these and are looking forward to showing them off! This display will take place in 4th 5th and 6th classrooms in the new building so feel free to have a browse! Dear Parents/ Guardians,

Important Notes

Pupil Personal Accident insurance:

This costs €7 per child. This is 24 hour cover, 365 days per year and represents excellent

value.

If you have not returned either of the above, could you please do so at your earliest

convenience.

Art and craft /photocopying etc. contribution:

The cost is €40 per child, €65 for two children and €80 for three or more children

Accelerated Reading (A.R.): This initiative is now up and running since September in

classes 2nd – 4th and will be started in 5th after Halloween

My Learner I.D.: 3rd and 4th class are continuing with this programme started last year. .

This is a programme for pupils to learn ‘how to learn’, to become and be learners. ‘My

Learner ID’ gives every pupil a 'voice' and helps children understand and explore how

they learn. Importantly it also allows others understand the learning ways of each learner.

Parent Teacher meetings: These will take place on Tue Nov 13th and Wed Nov 14th.

This year parents will be able to book times directly through Aladdin Connect. More in-

formation closer to the time.

Personal Belongings: Please make sure to put your children’s names on items such as

coats, tops, lunch boxes etc. This makes it much easier for us to return the lost item and it

greatly increases the chances of you getting them back!

Halloween Food:

Please be aware of the whole school ban on food containing nuts / traces of nuts particu-

larly at this time of year coming up to Halloween

Sport:

Girls Football: The girls have played three matches in their group – defeating Ballyea,

Newmarket and Quin. They are now in the final of the competition .The news has just

reached us that won the final! Well done to all involved!

Boys Football: The boys have played four matches in their group, but unfortunately they

will not progress past the group stages.

Show jumping: On Friday the 19th October, ten of our pupils took part in this inter

school event. Thank you to the parents who purchased numnahs and donated them to the

school . We would also like to thank the Parents Association who kindly sponsored the

embroidery of our school crest on each numnah

Futsal: 3rd & 4th classes took part in this inter school event on Oct 10th

Swimming: 5th class started lessons on October 17th – December 5thh .and 4th class start

on December 12th Please remember that the children are brought by bus from the school

to the pool and must be collected from the pool by 3 p.m. sharp by a parent/guardian

Swimming gala: 8 pupils from the school took part in the schools swimming gala in U.L

on Sat Oct 20th

Field Trips:

Seedsavers: The pupils from Mr O Reilly’s 4th class had a most enjoyable trip to Seed

Savers in Scariff on Oct 2nd

Twelve O'Clock Hills : 6th class spent a day here on Sept 28th

Many thanks to the teachers for organising these trips, and well done to all the pupils for

their excellent behaviour on these days.

Student Council:

The following are the members of our Student Council for the coming school year:

James Shalloo-Murphy and Lauren Meaney(6th) , Ella Farrell, Micheal O Coileain(5th)

Amy Reynolds, Aoibheann Moore(4th) Lilith Kearney, Sean Garvey (3rd) Isabelle Doherty

& Eoin O’Connor (2nd)

They will meet every month with Sinead and Edel to discuss their wonderful ideas on

school life!

Active Schools Committee:

The following are the members of our Active Schools Committee for the coming year:

Cunniffe, (6th ) Liam Hughes Keane, Sophie Leahy, Grace Herbert (5th ) Amelie Previllion,

Aoife Horan, Kate McMahon (4th) Ciara Brooks, Sophie Talty, Ailbhe Curran (3rd) We are

continuing with the Active School’s programme and this committee will assist and advise

Colm Mullen and Jamie in the implementation of the various activities!!!

Time for a clear out:

The Parents Council are having a clothes collection. Mid-term break is a great time to

clear out clothes your children have grown out of along with bedding/towels etc. and raise

money for the school.

Cash for Clobber take all of the following:

· Clean dry Men’s, Women’s & Children’s clothes

· Belts, bags & shoes/boots in pairs

· Bedding, towels, curtains

· NO PILLOWS OR DUVETS

Please use standard large refuse bags and bring them to school by Thurs Nov 8th
