December Newsletter 2016

Music Generation:

On Wednesday the 28th of September rapper Gary

McCarthy owner of GMC beats visited the school.

Children came from loads of different schools

attended. We came up with our own rap and recorded

it. We picked our own backing track from famous

rappers. We all had a part to rap. The rap was based

on music and beats. It was a brilliant day and we

really enjoyed it.

Cross Country Running: On Wednesday 21st of September Cross Country took place in Lees Road. It was

raining very heavily and we got soaked .None of us got placed but we all ran well. It was great fun but we got a

little bit cold .I hope we get in next year.

Mullaghmore: On Friday the 7th of October, 6th class

climbed Mullaghmore. We left the school at 1pm and

arrived there at about 1.30 p.m .We then split into

groups and started to climb. Once we reached the top

we stopped and had our lunch. Some people found the

climb difficult!! There was a fabulous view from the

top of the mountain. Once we got back down the bus

was waiting to drop us to Bofey Quinn’s in Corofin.

There we had pizza, chips and MiWadi!! We then

went to the shop and bought lots of sweets. We had a

great day and the weather, surprisingly, was fantastic!!

Wind Energy Talk:

On Mon Oct 10th some men from Moneypoint and Dundalk IT came in to speak to us about wind energy. They

set up a mini version of a wind turbine and it was plugged into the wall so it rotated like a real wind turbine. They

also hada project for the Intel judges. There were 7 judges. Our parents and families also came in to see our work.

The judges had a really hard time in picking a winner and a runner up. The winning project was called “ Bats” by

Creavan Lane , Ben & Cal Kirby and in second place was a project called “Sound” by Elin Blake and Caitríona

Warner. The winning project will now go onto the regional final in Intel in Shannon on Dec 6th

Dear Parents

As Christmas approaches we are finishing our busy first term of the school year. A lot of the newsletter

is an account of the terms activities, written by the children. Enjoy

Girls Football:

Last week we played against Clonlara it was a challenge match but it was still really fun. 4th 5th 6th class

were playing in it. It took a while to get out there but it was worth it. Then on Friday we played against

Newmarket this was played in Gurteen. Newmarket played well but we beat them .The score was 3 -16

to 2 -5 to Knockanean .On Tuesday 27th we played against Ballyea we lost by a few points and goals.

They were really good. It was a tough match!!! It was on in Gurteen we went on a bus. Some of us went

on the small bus and some went on the big bus. Boys and girls went together because the boys were

playing also

We reached the semi-final against Gaelscoil Mhícíl Cíosóg in Gurteen .Everyone was saying the

Gaelscoil were unbeatable but we beat them! It was a hard match but we won by 4 points and we were so

happy. We played in the final against Ballyea .It was so exciting to be in Cusack Park. We played really

well but they were a better team.

Our trainers are Mr Curran Joe and Sinead.

Boys Football:

We started our football season against Ballyea. We were 1 point up at half time but Ballyea then pulled

away in the second half. Next up were The Nash, We were 2-6 to 0-0 down at half time which needed a

strong second half performance which we had. We brought it back to 4 points after 10 minutes but we

couldn't get those 4 points back. Next we played the C. B.S who were very strong and they ran out

worthy winners. We then travelled to the Gaelscoil who we were just as good as us. We were missing a

few 6th class but like the Nash we were slow starters but we raised a phenomenal second half which gave

us hope but the first half turned out to be the difference. Our final game was against Barefield where we

split into two even teams of 4th 5th and 6th. We were beaten well in both games,unfortunately we didn't

make the semi-finals but we really enjoyed ourselves!!! Thanks to John and Mr Mullen for training us all

season.

Mrs Mac’s retirement

Mrs Mac retired on Oct 28th. We all learned songs and 3rd 4th 5th & 6th came together to practice them

Visit of Shane Gilmore (Sculptor):

On Monday the 24th of October Shane

Gilmore visited the school. He told us about

what he did and why he loves it. He explained

how he makes his sculptures and all the

different types of sculptures he makes. He

works with clay, wood stone and sometimes

bronze. He was responsible for the two big

hands at the front of the cathedral. He made a

The Children of 1916 - Galway Junior Film Fleadh:

Theatre in Galway to view a screening of our animated film

Halloween Party:

Our Annual Halloween Party was held in The West County Hotel and

organised by the Parents Association.

Galway Junior Film Fleadh: On Thurs Nov 10th we were invited to the Town Hall

Theatre in Galway to view a screening of our animated film “The Children of 1916” There were

We were nominated for a Fis Film award for animation and soundtrack.Last year fifth and sixth class made an animated film about the children in the 1916 rising with the help of Ana Colomer.We left the school at 7:15 on a bus. On the way we stopped at Junction 14 Mayfield for a little snack. We arrived at DCU in Dublin at around 11:30. We met Johnny Cooper and took some pictures. After a while we played outside in the DCU grounds until the award ceremony started. Anna Ciaran were chosen to collect the award on stage. All the movies were brilliant but eventually we got our chance to win the animation award. John had dabbed ( a dance move) multiple times before this so when Ciaran and Anna went onstage the presenter had a few questions about the dab. So John was forced to pull out his best dance moves. We were presented with the award and an Ipad Air. After a while we finally left the Helix. On the way back we stopped at Junction 14 again for our dinner. We got back at around 7:00. Fifth class trip to the Burren

On the first of December 5th class went on a guided

tour in the Burren led by Tony Kirby .We went on this

trip because we are studying for a science fair which

will take place in Mary Immaculate College in

January. We are studying ‘Is

Biodiversity?’ Tony Kirby told us that the Burren is a

bio - diversearea. We also found out that the Burren has

9 different species of bats out of a

Ice Skating On December 16th, 6th class went Ice Skating in Arthur’s Quay, Limerick. We were rushing to get our skates on, and hop on the ice .It was a new activity for most of us! But at the same time we all loved it, even though it was a bit cold! After ice skating we all went to get our shoes and our feet were so cold we couldn't even feel them. When we had our shoes on we went to Arthur's Quay and we got lots of sweets. Then we got on the bus and went to Cratloe Woods and hung out there for a while. After that we got on the bus and John handed out Celebrations. Then we got back to class and went home. We really enjoyed our ice skating adventure.
