KNOW THE NEW MEMBERS IN THE COUNCIL OF MINISTERS A METALLURGICAL engineer from Indian Institute of Technology, Parrikar was chief minister of Goa and stands out for an unpretentious style. He was the architect of an entity forged with Christians ahead of the 2012 Assembly elections after he realised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would never have a chance of forming a government in Goa unless it reached out to the minority community. At the same time, when the leader of the Sri Ram Sene, Pramod Muthalik, tried to expand his activities from Mangaluru to Goa, Parrikar came down hard on him and virtually outlawed him from the state, despite the fact that Muthalik had by then joined BJP. Muthalik is now banned from entering Goa. He is frank and criticised the decision to ban iron ore mining in Goa, later lauding the Supreme Court for lifting it. Goa’s business community was forthright in welcoming his appointment as chief minister and hailing him as a man who understands business and entrepreneurship. He is known for integrity and simplicity in his personal style. The BJP government in Goa currently has 21 MLAs out of 40 and with allies, has 26. STRONG POINTS ! His educational background makes him one of the more cerebral members of the Cabinet ! He understands the practical problems of mining, pricing and allocation of natural resources ! He understands problems of business as and can come up with creative solutions SURESH PRABHU has straddled so many different worlds and reconciled these so easily that it’s easy to forget he entered politics as a Shiv Sena man. A chartered accountant and lawyer by training, he rose to become a parliamentarian from Maharashtra. A politician of many words, he shone as minister under the Vajpayee government, handling portfolios as diverse as environment and power. At a time when the environment wasn’t as hotly debated as now, he made a mark at the ministry even as he chaired the committee on inter-linking of rivers, giving life to a rather controversial mega-project. He did even better at the power ministry, spearheading the reforms of electricity and power laws. Even at the cost of an extended snub to his parent party, Shiv Sena, he is ready for his next role. STRONG POINTS ! Made a mark as a minister during the Vajpayee regime in various capacities ! Became the first politician who came from the right wing, to speak about sustainable development and became a darling of overseas green NGOs and businesses and governments alike ! A chartered accountant and lawyer, he is now seen as more of a BJP man than Marathi manoos JAGAT PRAKASH Nadda was expected to become the chief of BJP, had Amit Shah not pipped him at the post. He is from Himachal Pradesh and began his political life with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), joining the Jayaparakash Narayan movement in 1975. He became secretary of its Patna University unit in 1977. He held various key positions in ABVP till 1990. Having been in jail for 45 days due to his campaign for upgrading schools in 1987, Nadda organised a Rashtriya Sangharsh Morcha against the ruling Congress. He was appointed the election in-charge of BJP’s youth wing during the 1989 Lok Sabha polls. At 31, Nadda became president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in 1991. He has served in various BJP governments in Himachal Pradesh and been an MLA in the state thrice. Between 1998 and 2003 and 2008 to 2010, Nadda served as a minister in the state government. In the previous BJP government (2007-2012) in the state, Nadda was forced to resign as forest minister in 2010 owing to differences with then chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal. He is a Rajya Sabha MP from Himachal Pradesh since May 2012. STRONG POINTS ! Knows the organisation intimately and while he has never been a central minister, understands the workings of administration in a state ! Is undogmatic, ready to listen and is practical ! Has a low-key, unintrusive style of functioning THE ABSENCE of a Jat leader in the council of ministers, despite the fact that Jats in Western Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Haryana backed BJP substantially, turning their backs on traditional leaders such as Ajit Singh is one reason for Sanwar Lal Jat’s inclusion in the government. Jat defeated Sachin Pilot in Ajmer by a margin of 175,000 votes. He is considered close to Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and, although he was water resources minister in her government when the Lok Sabha elections were held, she asked him to quit his position as an MLA and contest the Lok Sabha elections, assuring him he would be elevated to a Central minister. That did not happen in Narendra Modi’s first round of expansion of council of ministers. He has been a minister thrice in the state government. STRONG POINTS ! Is a Jat, a caste which has backed BJP well ! Is not a novice, having had experience as a minister in the state government ! Could be used, if one is needed, as a bridge between Modi and Raje, as he is highly regarded by her TELANGANA WILL now have representa- tion at the Centre with Bandaru Dattatreya, the lone BJP MP to be elected from the state, being inducted into Narendra Modi’s ministry. The 67-year-old politician had been a pracharakof the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) before joining BJP. He was elected as a member of Parliament for the first time in 1991 and twice, thereafter, in 1998 and 1999 from the Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency. He was re-elected to the Lok Sabha from the same constituency in 2014. He had served as a Union minister of state from 1999-2004 in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. Dattatreya had been the face of BJP in Andhra Pradesh for a long time. He had been the party's state secretary in 1980 and its president from 1996 to 1998. He is currently BJP's national vice-president and is known for organisational skills. STRONG POINTS ! Only BJP candidate to be elected from Telangana ! A grassroots leader, was a known face of BJP in undivided Andhra Pradesh ! He has previous experience as a minister in the Union ministry. He was a minister of state in the Vajpayee government YALAMANCHILI SATYANARAYANA Chowdary is an industrialist-turned- politician who has been close to Telugu Desam Party chief N Chandrababu Naidu, for a long time. He, along with another industrialist CM Ramesh and educationist Narayana, had been very active during the 2014 elections. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2010. Being chairman of $2-billion Sujana group, he is popularly known as Sujana Chowdary. Born on June 2, 1961, Chowdary is a post-graduate in engineering. The 53-year- old politician started the Sujana group with a single appliances manufacturing unit and transformed it into a diversified group with interests in steel, telecom, power infrastructure, energy, urban infrastructure, precision engineering, household appliances and education. The Hyderabad-based group has three listed companies — Sujana Towers , Sujana Metal Products and Sujana Universal Industries . STRONG POINTS ! Close to Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu ! Chairman of $2-billion Sujana group ! Is associated with NT Rama Rao Trust, TDP's social service arm BIRENDER SINGH had always fancied himself as chief minister of Haryana. However, his dreams never came to fruition. Despite joining BJP at an election rally in Jind, the Congress rebel and Jat leader could only bag a ticket for wife Prem Lata in the recent Assembly polls, much to the dismay of followers at Banger in Jind. With a non-Jat in the chief minister’s chair, BJP is conscious of not alienating the Jats any further. Singh had ended his four-decade association with the Congress after his charges against then chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda went unheeded by the party high command. The grandson of Jat leader Sir Chottu Ram had accused Hooda of bias towards his own constituency and neglect of other Jat strongholds. He was suspended for anti-party activities following his adverse remarks against party Vice-President Rahul Gandhi and for hobnobbing with BJP. A four-time MLA from Uchana, a seat which he lost to O P Chautala in the 2009 polls, Singh’s long political career includes several stints as a cabinet minister in Haryana. Singh’s elevation to the Union Cabinet can be attributed to his strong mass base among the Jats and the large presence of the community in north India, including election-bound Delhi. STRONG POINTS ! Took on former Haryana chief minister and Jat strongman Bhupinder Singh Hooda ! Joined BJP in August 2014 in the presence of party President Amit Shah, ending his 42-year-old association with the Congress ! Prominent Jat leader and grandson of peasant leader Sir Chottu Ram HINDI MUSIC lovers might not have heard much from Bollywood singer Babul Supriyo after his Kaho Na Pyaar Hai hit numbers, but he has now emerged as the most-heard BJP voice on news channels in West Bengal. From being an outsider to becoming one of the most prominent faces of a rising political force in the state, Supriyo has come a long way. If seating next to yoga guru Ramdev last February earned him a BJP ticket in the Lok Sabha polls from Asansol, party cadres say the kind of effort he had put in during election campaigns was unlike a usual celebrity candidate. The 44-year-old singer earned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s praise for his fighting spirit. Supriyo had quit his Standard Chartered Bank job in his 30s to become a professional singer. But will Supriyo, often clad in jeans and T-shirt, riding his Royal Enfield, change his boy-next-door image after he joins Modi’s council of ministers? Only time will tell. STRONG POINTS ! A celebrity singer who sang many hit songs in Bollywood movies ! Prime Minister Modi had called him a “fighter”, looking at his hard work ! Good communicator and accessible to the public JAYANT SINHA, 51, has been a loner in the national capital, especially after he was denied a position in Narendra Modi’s council of ministers on May 26. Given his academic background, Sinha was hopeful of getting a ministerial post after he won his maiden Lok Sabha election from the Hazaribagh parliamentary seat in Jharkhand. Though Sinha might be a newcomer to Parliament, he has learnt the tricks of the trade from father Yashwant Sinha, a seasoned politician who was finance minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. Sinha senior had represented the Hazaribagh seat many a times in the past. Jayant had studied at IIT, Delhi, and Harvard University. IIT proved to be a turning point in his life. He worked for nearly 20 years in Boston and Philadelphia. Currently, he is a member of two important parliamentary committees — the Public Accounts Committee and the Standing Committee on Finance. His selection as a minister can certainly fill the void of talent in the present council of ministers. STRONG POINTS ! Son of former finance minister Yashwant Sinha ! Studied at IIT, Delhi, and Harvard University ! A sought face on television channels for comments on policy-related matters TILL THE 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Rajyavardhan Rathore was more known as an army shooter who won India its first individual Olympic silver medal. But soon after the election results, he earned the reputation of a giant slayer by defeating veteran Congress leader C P Joshi with a record margin of over 300,000 votes. Rathore, 44, represents the Jaipur (Rural) constituency in the Lok Sabha and is also a member of the standing committee on defence. It is widely believed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi maintains a distance from Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje. Rathore’s selection could be like killing two birds with one stone. His military background training will be handy while discharging his new duties. Rathore retired as a colonel in 2013. STRONG POINTS ! Won India its first individual Olympic silver medal and retired as a colonel from the army ! Won various medals in double-trap shoot events across the world. He has been awarded the Khel Ratna. ! Defeated Congress veteran C P Joshi by a record margin of over 300,000 votes. Doesn’t belong to any camps in BJP ELECTED TO the Lok Sabha twice from Rampur in Uttar Pradesh, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi was last caught in a controversy he himself sparked. The issue was the induction of Sabir Ali, an important Muslim leader from Bihar, who courted controversy by challenging his erstwhile party, the Janata Dal (United) by praising Narendra Modi’s leadership qualities in the middle of the Lok Sabha elections. The praise had the desired result. JD(U) expelled Ali and within 24 hours, BJP invited him to join. When Ali was about to join BJP, Naqvi tweeted he was shocked at the decision of his party to recruit a man who has been an associate of Yaseen Bhatkal, one of the kingpins of the Indian Mujahideen named in a number of cases of bombings all over India. Ali was aghast by this charge and went public saying he had no connection with Bhatkal, adding he would “hang” himself if Naqvi proved his charge. However, BJP scurried for cover and although a lot of effort, especially by party leader Arun Jaitley, had been expended in getting Ali to come over to BJP, it was dashed to nothing. STRONG POINTS ! Has won twice from Rampur in UP, which has 50 per cent Muslim population ! Is a regular spokesperson for the BJP and is known for his articulation ! Has been selected for elevation though he is a Shia, not a Sunni like Syed Shahnawaz Hussain FOR BJP’S fourth-term MP from Chandrapur in Maharashtra, Hansraj Gangaram Ahir, elevation to the Union ministry is a birthday gift. He turns 59 on November 11. Ahir came into the limelight due to his exposé of the alleged multi-crore coal mining scam. He pursued the case relentlessly, first with the parliamentary committee on coal and steel, and later with the Central Vigilance Commission. This led to the Central Bureau of Investigation probe and the cancellation of 214 coal blocks by the Supreme Court. In his reaction after the apex court order, Ahir said his stand was vindicated as all allocations were illegal. Ahir claims environment protection is his passion. He was appointed as the chairman of parliamentary standing committee on coal and steel in the 16th Lok Sabha. STRONG POINTS ! First elected to Lok Sabha in 1996 ! During the 14th Lok Sabha he got into the limelight after his exposure against coal scam ! Was credited as "role-model" for MPs for his parliamentary work HE LOVES litti-chokha and ensures his guests get a taste of this typical Bihari delicacy. His association with RSS, the progenitor of BJP, goes back to his childhood. Singh belongs to the powerful Bhumihar caste and was a minister in the Janata Dal-BJP coalition government cabinet for eight years. Even as a minister, he never missed a chance to criticise then Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar. At the height of the Nitish-(Narendra) Modi proxy war, Singh chose to side with the latter. This, perhaps, earned him a ministerial berth in the council of ministers on Sunday. Loyalty to the leader aside, Giriraj is known for a series of controversial statements. His alleged exhortation to voters during Lok Sabha campaign that they should either vote for Modi-led BJP or go to Pakistan invited a lot of criticism. BJP had to maintain a distance from his statement. At another time, he called Brahmeshwar “Mukhia”, the murdered chief of private militia Ranvir Sena, a true Gandhian. Ranvir Sena allegedly carried out a massacre of Dalits in the 1990s. Experts feel his induction in the council of ministers is an attempt to please the Bhumihars, who, though numerically not so large, wield considerable influence in Bihar politics. In recent years, the Nawada MP has emerged as a strong votary of aggressive Hindutva politics. STRONG POINTS ! A known Modi loyalist ! Likes to stay in the limelight with controversial statements !
