FACTS:Environmental Centre Arcturos is a Greek non-profit wildlife conservation organization which focuses its efforts on saving the brown bear and its habitats.
Arcturos implements cross-border projects in order to protect mountainous ecosystems, with an emphasis on bears and large mammals.
In 2016, Arcuros provides a natural habitat to more than 15 bears and 10 wolves.
Over the last 25 years, Arcturos has managed to raise public awareness about large mammals, save a lot of them from various dangers and offer a shelter were they are taken care of.
Know Your Bear
A study conducted, between 2007 and 2010 found that the number of bears in Greece has increased, thanks to the organizations’ actions. Arcturos has a popular merch series and a team that participates in Athens Classic Marathon. The organization’s operational costs, including food and medical expenses, are covered only by donations, animal adoptions, entrance fees to the Brown Bear Sanctuary, registration fees for participating with the Arcturos team in the Marathon and merch sales. BIGGEST PROBLEM?
Arcturos needs approximately 20 euros/day to cover the needs of a bear and 10 euros/day for these of a wolf.
If we add the food and health care needs for the rest of the mammals under supervision, plus operational expenses, we conclude that a serious amount of money is needed on daily basis for the organization needs.

How can Gamification help Arcturos?
“We will create a mobile application that contains all the necessary information about the organization. The app will also inlcude the game “Know your Bear”. The game will help increase public awareness for Arcturos’ activities and the organization to increase donation offers, merch sales and Marathon registration fees.
Game Mission The player will have to choose between two bear
characters and walk them through a forest labyrinth, to the Arcturos HQ in Florina, Greece.
Every step, will unveil a fact about the bear and the dangers it faces during its life.
In order to move forward, the player has to answer to a multiple choice question with reference to the selected character.
Following the bear’s trip, the player will learn more about the bear’s life and Arcturos activities.
Patrick
A cute little bear that unveils the facts of a new born bear from the day of birth until the age of five.

Barbara
A wise, adult bear that shares her wisdom, providing facts around the life of an aged bear.
Gameplay
RULES Every level will have five questions of scalable difficulty
level. The player has to complete ten levels to end the game,
which means fifty correct answered questions. The questions will be picked randomly from a question
pool provided by the Arcturos experts.

GAMIFICATION ELEMENTS
By downloading the app the player receives the official Arcturos supporter badge, which can be display in social media profiles.
There will be a leaderboard. The player can compete with all app users. Each month, the champion gets a free Arcturos t-shirt. The rest on the top-10 get a 10% discount on Arcturos e-shop.
Upon level completion, the player receives a badge, which can also be showcased.
There will be a progress bar within each level.

Benefits to the organization
Since mobile applications are very popular nowadays, this gamified system can soon reach many people.
Donations, adoptions, merch sales, marathon registrations and volunteering applications will increase, since a new network of potential supporters will be created.
All development and marketing efforts can be covered by the Arcturos volunteering stream, or can be outsourced to companies and universities, as a Corporate Social Responsibility action.
This app can be used for information purposes in schools, increasing the pool of potential supporters. Kids love bears!
Benefits to the player
Players will get familiar with the significance of Arcturos’ work and public service.
They will learn by playing a lot of information for the life and dangers of an animal under extinction, such as the Brown Bear.
They will participate in something big and significant.
They will grow a sense of how important wild life is for the ecosystem.
If they are devoted and good players, they will get a free t-shirt
Benefits to the bears
Over the years, humans have treated bears, and wild animals in general, with disrespect. By supporting Arcturos, someone can be sure that little bears will find their way through life and aged bears will live in dignity and respect until their last days.
