Transforming women’s lives through the power of God’s Word

President’s Piece As I have travelled around the country these past six months, I have been greatly encouraged by the KYB ladies I have met. To hear how the KYB groups in various areas are growing and forming new groups is great. To meet a lady I knew from the depths of Wales at a dessert evening in Bristol and ask how she had come to be there, then hear it was because her daughter lived in the area, and she wanted to take her, was thrilling. To be told how the translated study in Polish is now being used by a group of ladies in Poland is wonderful. These and many other stories have been a delight to me.

As a Newslink team we are always encouraged by the very positive response we receive from you about the articles you read in the magazine. Our thanks go to all those who send in articles; we find that each time we put Newslink together, God has gone before and the articles seem to dovetail and a theme runs through each page. Personally it has been a humbling experience to hear how my story has helped some of you as you have experienced bereavement and others who now anticipate the future with hope knowing that God will be sufficient for them, rather than dread of all the ‘what if’s’ that haven’t happened.

Often we keep what we are going through to ourselves, we don’t share with others our struggles. Many of us keep our Christian lives very private, struggling with prayer, struggling to read the bible, struggling to

forgive, doubting God’s love for us and a host of other things that are carefully locked away. But neither do we share with others, how God has guided us, when God speaks through His Word, when we have known conviction as we have read the scriptures, how God has helped and given strength through varying situations, these too are carefully locked away.

Some would say, there are two things we don’t speak about - politics and religion - they are private, but I am not talking about politics or religion, I am talking about Christianity and this is about a real, living relationship that affects absolutely all of our life. This is one of the ways Know your Bible is so good, because as we read and study the bible, it often gives opportunities to share, sometimes problems, but at others the joys of our walk with God and everyone in the group feels encouraged and some empowered to ask for help in difficult circumstances.

But what about beyond our study groups? The danger is that for the outsider, religion is something historical and outdated with lot of rules and regulations that have nothing to do with the present. It is as we live and speak about our everyday Christian life, with its joys and struggles, that the next generation will begin to see the relevance that, in our hurting world, God is with us today.

We are told in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God”. These verses are amazing, they tell us that God is able and willing to comfort us in all our troubles, this does not mean God always takes us out of our problems but is there with us in the midst of them. Then we understand and are able to comfort others in any troubles. To do this we need to be real and show that we have a living everyday faith and a living God who is all sufficient.

With love, Sandra

Ever since Jacqueline and I had the pleasure to be at the conference in Willersley Castle in 2015, we have been looking forward to having Sandra Gilbert visit us in Denmark.

We are only ten groups in Denmark, centered around Holstebro in the western part of Jutland. The date was set late 2016. We were thrilled when Sandra proposed to invite KYB group members from all over Europe, but unfortunately that did not work out. Instead we had the privilege of seeing Sandra and Sue Edgeler from UK in our midst on our Inspiration Day in Nørrelands church in Holstebro.

About 30 women, many new to KYB, met to study the life of David under the theme ‘Near to the heart of God’. Sandra had two sessions: The first session on how David was chosen by God, and got the testimony: ‘A man chosen by God’. God saw in David ‘a man after his own heart’. Not great appearance, but trust in the Lord. This session was followed by bible study on David and Bethsheba; even though he was chosen by God as a man after his own heart, he fell into sin. David was a wonderful poet, we still read his psalms whenever we want to rejoice or we are sad. So we had a session to write our own psalm from wherever each one of us stood in our life, a challenge all the ladies took very seriously, taking the opportunity to reflect on what we had heard thus far and how to apply it to our lives. Sandra closed by talking on David’s relationship with Saul: respecting him as God´s anointed in spite of what he had done.

To me the take home message was: God chose us for a purpose, he has a plan for each of us. But even though we are chosen, we are still in the world and exposed to temptation.

KYB Inspiration Day in Denmark When we fall into temptation it is crucial that we repent and turn to the Lord again to be cleansed. We have to live near to God´s heart to grow in our Christian life. We do that through bible study, prayer and Christian fellowship, just like the first disciples. KYB is a good help in this process.

On the next day Sandra brought a greeting to the congregation of the church at the Sunday service, encouraging people to join small bible study groups. Our pastor seconded her. So we look forward to see more people in our groups, even to see new groups develop by the grace of God.

We are very grateful for this encouraging visit and praise God for the fellowship in Him with people like Sandra and Sue.

Tinne Hornstrup

Testimony from Marianne Skjølstrup, DenmarkI’ve been deeply blessed by the teaching at this conference, as we focused on David, a man after God’s own heart. One thing that particularly spoke to me was the thought that God molded David in the years he was only a shepherd boy and equipped him for the future tasks He had for him. David’s brothers didn’t respect him. His father even forgot about him, when Samuel came and asked to see his sons. But God used that time in the desert the make him a man after His own heart.

The times in our lives that seem wasted or unproductive, are not wasted in God’s hands, if we seek Him. The past few years in my life have been a desert walk, suffering from burnout and stress. I did not have the strength to go to church or bible study. I spent my Sundays at home with my bible and sermons / teachings I found on YouTube. But through those seemingly unfruitful years, God has built up my faith in who He is, and has shown me that His grace is enough for every walk in my life. The conference reminded me of that truth and gave me hope, that I will see God use those dark years for good. They will be useable to Him, even when I at times felt my life was wasted. May God always remind us of His perspective on our lives and on us; it’s a lot more gracious than man’s.

Choices was our title for the day and our speaker Lyn Green challenged us with some of the choices we have made in our lives and the effect they have had on others; some good and some not so good.

I think the South West Regional Team have been greatly affected by Lyn’s love for KYB and her very close walk with God. Her love for KYB and for God’s Word hasn’t diminished. It is because of Lyn that I was introduced to KYB 18 years ago and I will always be grateful to her for that.

Whenever you put on a conference there is always a panic a few days before – ‘will anyone come’? - but 34 faithful ladies from Plymouth came, enthusiastic and looking forward to the day. Saltash Baptist Church was a lovely venue and set in a very convenient location right next to the train station and close to a bus route. We were blessed with good weather. Tea, coffee and homemade cakes were freely available throughout the day.

Lyn encouraged us to share our testimony with other people. Our testimony is our story and it is powerful to believers and those who have not yet made that choice to accept Jesus into their lives.

Lyn talked about the valley of choices. At some time most of us, if not all, have had to walk through

SaltashDay

valleys, of illness, loneliness, bereavement, chronic pain, divorce and much more. Do we choose the short hard route or the long easy route? A phone call, a visit to the doctor can suddenly hurl us into a valley and we can’t always be prepared for it. Some valleys are very long, some are short and sharp. As we hold on to the Lord, His promise is always to be with us, we WILL pass through it. Lyn encouraged us to read 1 Corinthians 1:8-9 God is faithful.

The second session was a little different as we grouped together to answer three questions Lyn set us:

Discuss together which women in the bible had to make a hard choice?

When you have been faced with a hard choice what helped you through?

How important is it that we have the Holy Spirit’s help to have a right attitude to choose ‘love, joy, peace etc’?

You may like to answer these questions in your home group or on your own. I wonder how many women in the bible you can name for the first question. We had some really interesting answers.

In the afternoon Lyn spoke of the choices God made before the creation of the world. The choice of giving us freewill meant that Jesus had to come to earth and be sacrificed for the plan of salvation. Jesus made that choice for us and said ‘Yes I will go’.

It has been quite a hard time for the Plymouth Ladies and this might have been the last conference, but several ladies have chosen, with the help of Sandra Gilbert and myself, that for as long as it is wanted, we will put on these conferences once a year.

Hebrews 10:25 says “Let us not give up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching”.

At the Brunel Conference in March 2018 we will be thinking about the lives of Joshua and Caleb and how God was faithfully fulfilling

His unchanging promises to His people through them. Let’s look at a snapshot of Caleb’s life in his later years:

“And Caleb said, “The one who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will even give him my daughter Achsah for a wife.” Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, captured it; so he gave him his daughter Achsah for a wife. Then it came about when she came to him, that she persuaded him to ask her father for a field. Then she alighted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Give me a blessing, since you have given me the land of the Negev, give me also springs of water.” So Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.” Judges 1:12-15

Have you ever read this story and thought that Caleb seems a bit stingy – why didn’t he want to give his daughter and son-in-law a better wedding gift? If he knew the land was dry, why not offer them the springs in the first place?

Although he is 85 in this story, Caleb is not presented to us as ‘getting on a bit’, fighting days over, retired, downsizing and handing on a few of the spoils he had amassed over his decorated military career to his daughter and her new husband so they would have a bit to raise the kids with… that isn’t what this story is about!

This story is about a warrior for God who started out in his youth full of faith, together with Joshua, spying out the land God wanted Israel to inherit, seeing the potential fruitfulness and not daunted by the giants (Numbers 13). Now, forty years on, he and Joshua are the only two left from their generation; all the others died in unbelief in the wilderness where they were roaming, not fulfilling God’s purposes, not entering into the promised land. But during that time, it seems Joshua and Caleb never stopped talking about the vision God gave them all those years ago. They held onto the promises God had made to them, the future God wanted for them as a people. And although they didn’t

manage to turn the unbelieving hearts of their own generation, they were determined to have an impact on the next one. Caleb had not yet finished his service for the Lord. He was still winning battles against God’s enemies, and he wanted to help the next generation to inherit God’s promises. So he issued a challenge: who will conquer Kiriath Sepher? And Othniel, inspired by the faith he had seen lived out by this older man for the last forty years, went up with the same spirit and conquered it.

Caleb wasn’t being stingy; he wasn’t withholding good gifts from his daughter – the land he offered her was what had been allotted to him by the Lord with the promise that with some faith and hard work it could be fruitful. Caleb was passing on the vision God had given him and Joshua right at the beginning of their work for the Lord. He was giving the next generation, Othniel and Achsah, an opportunity to rise up in faith and action.

God loves to see dry ground watered, cultivated and begin to bear fruit. He looks at the toughest situations, the darkest places, the hardest hearts and calls us to work with Him to bring transformation through love, prayer and sharing the hope of the gospel. Don’t let go of the dreams and visions the Lord has given you, even if you haven’t seen them fully realized yet! Keep working towards them in faith and inspire the next generation to work with you! Call on the Lord for a fresh rain of His Spirit on your labours to bring forth new life and growth – He who promised is faithful.

How blessed it is to spend a weekend with ladies of like minds!

On the 16th June I was able to go with a couple of friends to Willersley Castle. It is in Cromford on the edge of the Peak District. I was amazed as we reached the top of the long drive to the castle and looked at a very commanding building, and a beautiful view of the valley and the river. We were blessed with very good weather for the whole weekend, brilliant sunshine which added to the beauty of the castle and the surrounding hills. It was lovely to be a part of God’s creation, seeing a number of animals and birds in and around the grounds of the castle. My friend really loves birds and writes down every one that she sees, so she was busy over the weekend with so many! We saw some ducks with ducklings down by the weir; they were paddling fast to keep up with mum!

The conference was a smallish group but that helped everyone to feel included and a part of all that was going on. I felt that less numbers enabled people to talk more to those they did not know. It probably would be possible to go alone but not feel alone.

There were four teaching sessions, a communion service, and a lot of inspiring teaching by Carol Dadswell. One thing that stood out to me was the sentence ‘If all else fails read the Makers Instructions’. Carol was trying to get us to see that the Bible is a manual for life. We have manuals for washing machines etc but if we guess and don’t bother to read the instructions, things are bound to go astray; when we follow the manual, all will fit together. Praise the Lord. He wants us to read and follow His Word. With the KYB studies we are able to do that and get closer to God.

Fun was had by all at the quiz on the Saturday evening. During the weekend there was free time to swim, walk or sit in the beautiful sunshine. The pool was warm and quiet so I was able to swim twice with no problems of getting in anybody else’s way. I happen to be gluten intolerant and the hotel was very good with gluten-free options on the menu. All the meals were very tasty with a lot of choice. The staff were always happy to help.

It’s a beautiful place well worth a visit. Pray I will see you there next time.

God bless you all.

A newbie’s response to KYB Conference 2017Written by Carolyn Evans and Diane Griffiths, PowysTravelling with a group of like-minded women was a joy and as we arrived at Willersley Castle on Friday evening, the love and care was shown as everyone had kindly waited for their meal until we arrived! That love continued as we settled into our rooms with a little gift of chocolates and a copy of Woman Alive!

It immediately became apparent that the conference was led by a close team of gentle, loving women with hearts burning for the Lord, who had carefully prepared a weekend to allow us to learn, relax and have fun in an informal, flexible and relaxed atmosphere. We felt ourselves unfurl and wriggle under a duvet of God’s love as we worshipped together.

The teaching by Carol Dadswell took us gently on a journey of discovering more of God’s amazing plan and Covenant, established in the Old Testament through the life of Moses and fulfilled in the New Testament in Jesus. What revelation, challenge and illumination! Each session allowed time to respond to God’s Word, take a break, be refreshed and come back for more. Even the fun of the team quiz added extra time to get to know each other! Then, finishing the weekend with sharing communion together and remembering all that God has provided in Jesus, brought the final red thread and turned it into pure gold.

Willersley Castle oozes a welcome, being in a beautiful setting, comfortable and clean, with quietly efficient and servant-hearted staff, who provided a tempting and varied menu each mealtime. Space in the day was given allowing us to get to know each other from all over the country as we explored the cool of the spacious grounds: the woods and secret paths, overlooking rolling countryside and the sparkling river with its tiny ducklings, the quiet swimming pool and gardens, with benches to sit and enjoy in shade or sunshine. Now all that we need is the CDs, to explore God’s Word again and take in a little more of the teaching and revelation and share it with our Church and KYB family. I plan to return and hope to meet more of this special group of women who are seeking to get to know God better and better.

I am almost afraid to listen to the news or see any more pictures of what is happening in our world in these times. We have had terrorist attacks in Manchester and London and the fire in Grenfell Tower. One thing is also certain, we are facing uncertain times. In fact, it might be easy to think that as a nation we are being condemned, or judged, for our national falling away from God. This is not a new phenomenon, however, a prophet living in Judah around 640-609 BC seemed to be burdened with something similar.

Habakkuk railed at God, “Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrong? Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and conflict abounds” (Hab. 1:3). Habakkuk could not understand why God was not working, intervening in the calamities being suffered due to Judah’s idol worship and licentious practices. God’s answer to Habakkuk was unpalatable: He was going to send the Babylonians to conquer Judah. Habakkuk could make no sense of this. God’s wayward people being punished by an even wicked people, how could this be? What God was showing the prophet was the Babylonian conquest and the proposed 70-year exile of His people. They were being judged, that is, punished or condemned.

Condemnation is a strong word, in the legal sense it has been used to condemn someone to a death sentence. In other uses it can be an expression of complete or absolute disapproval, or referring to an object that it is unfit for use. Thankfully in the eyes of God, His children are never ‘unfit for use,’ though their behaviour might need correction or discipline. We see this very clearly in Hebrews 12: 6 “…the Lord disciplines those he loves and punishes everyone he accepts as a son.” The word

‘to chasten’ is synonymous with the concept of discipline.

There is a strong link in scripture with the concept of judgement and condemnation, and a link to the concept of discipline. Psalm 94:10 poses the question: “Does he who disciplines nations not punish?” Nationally, we need to be aware of choices made that would merit the punishment of God. This is also true on a personal level: a friend of mine with four daughters often told them, ‘Choices are free, consequences are not.’

My own experiences of being chastened by the Lord are, unfortunately, many. However, what I know is that it has always been for my good. I experience the love of God when He shows me the error of my ways and the sinful patterns I have been adopting. He does not condemn me to the rubbish heap. In fact, I feel His love more deeply. In His kindness, God shows me my sin and I am free to agree with Him that He is right! If I were to be condemned I would be lost in my sinful state forever.

So, what did God do with His people after their exile? He brought them back to their land and they rebuilt Jerusalem, but never again did they go after other gods. They had learned a good lesson. Are we being condemned by God, or chastened for our own good, nationally and personally? The only way to be sure is to turn back to Him. To admit that He is right and we are wrong opens the door to being chastened. Condemnation would be too much to bear; chastening offers us the opportunity to know the care of the loving Father who disciplines carefully.

Bristol Dessert Evening – ‘Sweeter than honey’There is something about the word ‘dessert’ that always gets my mouth watering! On 2nd June, the Bristol KYB team held their annual (almost) - dare I say famous? - Dessert Evening. We were greeted with a wonderful array of desserts including cheesecake, chocolate brownies, trifle, fresh berries and flans (is your mouth watering yet?) Everything was delicious, and we really appreciated all those who baked or bought, placed sweet posies of flowers on every table, and served in the kitchen. Moreover, we also feasted on the Word of God. “How sweet are Your words to my taste! Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Psalm 119:103.)

We were very blessed to have Sandra Gilbert as our speaker and she reminded us of the difference that Jesus makes in our lives when we trust in Him. “My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, do not be afraid.” (John 14:27.) God gives us the peace we need for today, even in the midst of trauma. We need to guard our hearts (Phil 4:7), like the inner keep of a castle, not worry about tomorrow or the years to come, but take everything to God in prayer. “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a future and a hope.” (Jer. 29:11).

Helston Dessert Evening –‘The Bible Bake Off’It was a tried and tested recipe for a KYB promotional event: a Summer Dessert Evening with background music, a testimony and Bible teaching in surroundings made aesthetically pleasing using bunting, fresh flowers, attractive tablecloths and, of course, luscious home-made desserts served with Cornish clotted cream.

The invites had been sent to local KYB groups, their daughters or friends. Ladies aged 15 to 90 arrived at 7pm on a wet, misty Saturday evening – summer had not yet arrived! How easily they could have decided to stay at home, but we were so glad they made the effort. They were welcomed and offered a fruit punch before sitting at the tables in the Sixth Form Centre.

Once welcomed officially, Sandra Gilbert (KYB president and our team treasurer) encouraged everyone by telling them what was happening in KYB groups around the country. After this, desserts were served, accompanied by the customary tea and coffee, and no-one was needed to encourage a flow of chatter at each of the tables. (As an aside, if anyone is inspired to organise a Dessert Evening it is very noticeable that fruit pavlova disappears very quickly!)

Our main speaker was Lesley Searle who had entitled her talk ‘The Bible Bake Off’. If you had watched just one programme of the British Bake off with Mary Berry you would have recognised many well known phrases such as ‘signature bake’, and of course ‘soggy bottoms’! The talk was cleverly devised so to hold interest, but also make really important correlations between baking and our lives, the recipe book and the Bible. Her first chosen passage was not sweet and fluffy but the heartbreaking story of Tamar and her half-brother’s lust for her (2 Samuel 13). In it, Tamar bakes for her brother, but with dire consequences. Her second passage was 1 Kings 17, Elijah and the widow of Zarapheth. This woman baked with miraculous provision.

One lady who attended commented that she was sure that every lady there would have been spoken to from the wide variety of lessons that Lesley brought out from the scriptures. Lesley emphasised that God through the mixtures/circumstances of our lives is making star bakers. Then the challenge came for the ladies to bake a cake themselves, pray who they give it to and use it as a witness. I hope the challenge was taken up by many and as they mixed their cake, it would remind them of what the Lord had spoken specifically to them that night.

KYB Alderney - Small is BeatifulAlderney is one of the smaller Channel Islands and part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. With a population of approximately 2000 it has a very close knit community spirit and the different churches work closely together, particularly as none of them have large congregations. A prayer group is held every Tuesday at the parish church, and KYB provides a much needed opportunity for Bible Study.

We meet weekly in the sun room at the Jubilee residential home, enabling residents of that home as well as from the neighbouring Connaught Nursing Home to join us. We have always had two or three ladies from the homes attend and enjoy our meetings and studies, and all find them to be spiritually uplifting and sustaining. At present we are reading Psalms of Restoration and Renewal which is a very

apt title as that is exactly how we feel after our meetings, restored and renewed. We would love more ladies to join us and benefit from the fellowship which we enjoy.

For the past few years our KYB group has organised the Women’s World Day of Prayer Service, and many not in our study group are invited to take part; yet another opportunity for unity in the community, something for which Alderney can be proud!

Bristol Dessert Evening

(continued from page 11)

The Bristol KYB team is now facing a time of transition as we say “Thank you and goodbye” to two wonderful, faithful women who have served on the committee for literally decades! At the end of June, Rebecca Thompson stepped down as Chairman after 17 years on the team. Rebecca brought a God-centred joy to all of our meetings and we know God will use her greatly in whatever ministry He has planned for her next. Val Ball also steps down as Treasurer after 28 years on the team. I have always admired Val’s steadfast faith and gentle spirit, and I am sure God will bless her during this next season of serving Him. Two very special ladies who will be missed by the team!

Of course, our God is faithful to provide and the team were delighted that several women stepped forward to volunteer to help on the team going forwards. We did not need to worry – we just needed to pray – and we have an exciting future ahead (more Dessert Evenings and more feasting on God’s Word!) As Psalm 34:8 says “O taste and see that the LORD is good!”
