What do you know about the skin and a skin specialist?

The human Skin is the outer most covering of the body and the largest organ of the integumentary system. It consists of multiple layers of ectodermal tissues and guards underlying muscles, bones, ligaments and other organs. The skin comes in the direct contact of the environment and plays a key role in providing immunity against pathogens and prevents excessive water loss. Moreover, the skin helps in insulation, temperature regulation, sensation and synthesis of vitamin D.

As it is the most exposed part of the body, the skin is more vulnerable to infection or diseases such as sunburns, cellulite, blisters, bruises, paronychia, acne, abscess, skin cancer and many more. Thus to cure these diseases a skin specialist or a dermatologist is needed.

Who is a skin specialist?

A skin specialist or dermatologist is a doctor who treats skin diseases, in the broad sense. Besides this, a skin specialist also plays a vital role in solving some common and rare cosmetic problems of the skin, scalp, hair, and nails. A dermatologist is a doctor who has five years of working experience in general medicine and after five years of practice, he undertakes at least a three-year programme for intensive medical and surgical training in dermatology. A skin specialist is specially trained in diagnosing and treating various skin conditions affecting persons of all ages.

There are various therapies used by dermatologists to treat skin related problems such as:

Cosmetic filler injections which are used to smoothen wrinkles and pitted scars in the skin.

Hair removal therapy with the help of laser or other modalities.

Hair transplantation– a cosmetic procedure practiced by many dermatologists.

Intralesional treatment – This treatment procedure uses steroids or chemotherapy to treat the skin lesions. It directly delivers the medication into the specific skin lesion and treats the local tissues.

Photodynamic therapy– It is used for the treatment of skin cancer and precancerous growths.

Phototherapy– It uses light, narrowband UVB, broadband UVB, psoralen and UVB to cure skin diseases.

Tumescent liposuction– It is a technique which uses local anesthesia to subcutaneous tissues and allows liposuction surgery. This is the most preferred surgery medical method among dermatologists, plastic surgeons and gynecologists.

Laser therapy is used for the management of birthmarks, test skin disorders (like vitiligo), tattoo removal, and cosmetic resurfacing and rejuvenation.

Cryosurgery is used for the treatment of warts, skin cancers, and other dermatosis.

Radiation Therapy– Although it is rarely practiced by dermatologists but many dermatologists continue to provide radiation therapy at their clinic.

Systemic therapies– This therapy includes antibiotics, immunomodulators, and novel injectable products for the treatment of skin related issues.

Topical therapies– In this therapy, medicines are directly applied to the surface of the body such as skin or mucous membranes. It is the first line of defence to prevent and cure psoriasis.

Expert skin specialists with highly equipped instruments at their clinics perform these therapies. One of such clinics is LL Cheong Skin and Laser Clinic. This clinic offers treatment to cure skin diseases, such as skin cancers, acne scars, wrinkles, pigmentary and vascular skin problems, wrinkles and facial lines, skin growths, hair loss and unwanted hair growths, using non invasive laser techniques, dermal fillers, intense pulse light therapy, chemical peeling and much more.

CONCLUSION

Skin specialists perform many surgeries and therapies to treat skin diseases. The instruments used are advanced so the specialists must be skillful to operate them. It is good to consult the specialists in the early stage of diseases as later it may be dangerous to health. So before going for the treatment, consulting with a skin specialist is a must.
