Personally, I don't see the need to ponder what business to start too much these days. The reason being is the potential debt you have to get yourself into to even start to realise a traditional business. A lot of people get the idea on opening a shop or a cafe but don't realise the horrendous expense that such venture involve.

Renting a space is one of the big costs. Commercial property prices may be down in many places in recent years but it is still a big part of any initial costs. And then there is fitting the place out. With a shop you may be able to get away with a pop-up type place and thus minimal decoration. If you want to open a food or beverage business then you are going to have to invest considerably more.

I am not saying you shouldn't go into either retail or catering I am just saying there is no need to spend a lot of money in the beginning. If you ask what business to start and you can produce some product or cook something that might be your answer.

You can run your business from a website. If you make any handicrafts or skincare products and the like you can market them online. You can also get other people to put them in their already established stores to sell. If you make food then you can use a website as your promotional shop front, supplement with sales in other stores and at markets etc.

Your costs for starting up will be much lower and you can invest more in developing your products and creating a brand. If your heart is set on having a real shop then you can consider it at a later date.
