How did nations respond to the depression?

Nations responded in many different ways…

Great Britain attempted to balance its budget

All governments became more involved in the lives of the people

The United States created relief programs

How did Britain try to balance its budget?

In the 1930’s, a new political party (the Conservative Party) came to power in Great Britain

The leaders took many steps to balance the budget. But mostly:

Raised taxes and Controlled spending

As the economy came under controlled, the government gave loans to new businesses

What type of relief programs were there in the US?

President Franklin Roosevelt started the NEW DEAL

Goals of the New Deal:

• Provide food and housing

• Create jobs

• Stimulate industry

• Prevent future depression

The New Deal lessened the suffering, but it would take another war before the unemployment issue was resolved
