Page 7: Knowledge Management in the DoD Many Approaches to a Common Imperative

KM Imperative: NOW!

Information is power.

That’s absolutely the case on the battlefield today.

And, to stay ahead of our adversaries, we have had to get better at sharing and coordinating knowledge – in order to use it effectively …

Vice Chief of Staff – Army, General Peter W. Chiarelli KM Conference, Washington D.C. – April 28, 2009

KM Imperative: NOW! (Continued)

The reality is that most game-changing decisions are now made by the individual on the ground.

And many of these decisions are required in a matter of minutes or hours – not weeks or months as was the case in past wars.

Vice Chief of Staff – Army, General Peter W. Chiarelli KM Conference, Washington D.C. – April 28, 2009

Gen. Stanley McChrystalhttp://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/09/24/60minutes/main5335445.shtml?tag=contentMain;contentBody

I'm less worried about leaks than I am about the people who don't know what we're trying to do … you know … ignorance. So, I think it's a trade-off, and I think I come down on this side (sharing) every time …

On the importance of sharing information:

The DISA Dilemma

“It took seven months to ramp up for the war in Iraq. Today, we haven't got seven days often to prepare for whatever engagement.

We don't know what it's going to be — disaster relief, humanitarian relief in the Swat Valley. Is it Somali pirates?”

John Garing DISA Director for Strategic Planning & Information [Retired May 2010]
