KM MATURITY MODEL KMMM is a methodology to develop Knowledge Management

goal oriented, systematically and holistically. It consists of twoModels, a development model and an analysis model.

The development model defines five maturity levels andprovides information how to make the next reasonable step inKnowledge Management Development.

The analysis model helps to take account of all important

aspects of Knowledge Management and reveals which topicsshould be developed in future.

As a third component an auditing process is defined whichstructures planning, data collection by interviews and

    workshops, and feedback sessions.

    KMA

KMAs are generally applicable to most organizations. It is possiblethat a firms KMAs will change as its understanding of knowledgemanagement evolves.

    1. Lessons Learned -- Useful knowledge gained while completinga project or task. The value of a lesson learned comes

when it is documented, shared, applied and reused. Eg BP

    2. Expertise -- Knowledge that is available in peoples heads. Thisknowledge may be gained through experience or formal

education. This knowledge is not easily expressed in words orpictures, but can be shared with another person through

    working together, observation, or mentoring.

KMA 3. Data -- Facts or figures obtained from operations, experiments or

surveys, stored in databases and data warehouses. Data

is used as a basis for making decisions (performing calculations and

drawing conclusions). Data can be queried and analyzed. Decision support tools for forecasting, planning, etc., also

    use data.

    4. Structured Knowledge -- Structured Knowledge is knowledgestored in Knowledge Documents such as project reports, technicalreports, policies and procedures, researchreports, publications, pictures, drawings, diagrams, audio and video

    clips.

    3. Consolidation and Preparation

    4. Feedback and Consensus

    5. Ideas for Solutions and Action Proposals

    6. Report and Presentation

    22/23

    KEY FACTORS INVOLVED

Each level has a set of prerequisites the organization isrequired to meet.

A given maturity level implies a certain level of organizationalcapability

    from level 4 onwards, quantitatively

Each maturity level is characterized in terms of the efficacy ofeach stage of the

    Knowledge life cycle:

    Knowledge Acquisition

    Knowledge Dissemination

    Knowledge Reuse

    KEY RESULT AREAS

    Content Structure Management (Process)

Ability to structure, categorize, access content

    Integrated logical content architecture exists.

Knowledge content is augmented with pointers to people.

Knowledge is structured a taxonomy of knowledge topics

Content management process defined.creation, editing, streamlining, publishing, certification andmaintenance

Process is owned by a central knowledge organization.
