Where BMGT 305 is headed

• You’ve learned the structure of knowledge, the language/taxonomy of knowledge, the perspective and role of KM, the external forces pushing the knowledge economy, and the value of KM in strategic direction.

• Next we will address the tactical level. How do you as a knowledge manager take action with what you know?

A Tactical Framework

Housel and Bell (2001) offer a matrix to evaluate proposed KM tactics. The matrix examines how well the tactic meets KM objectives: To generate, capture, organize, manage, and reuse knowledge. Across the top the matrix can be adjusted to address the type of knowledge tactic being proposed. For example, different endpoints are used for licensing vs. knowledge sharing.

For example, for the Knowledge Sharing Group Project change Structured text, raw text and video to Face-to-face, asynchronous access, and tracking /feedback capabilities .

• Value of knowledge can be measured on the basis of a product, unit, organization or even national economy.

• IP value, has historically been termed intangible property.

• Housel & Bell (2001) provide a comprehensive table in how to evaluate KM.

Week Six: Knowledge Value and Measurements

Page 6: KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT WEEK FIVE€¦ · KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT WEEK FIVE Knowledge Metrics & Valuation Dr. Roxanne Ward Zaghab UMUC Adjunct Assistant Professor . Where BMGT 305 is headed

• Measuring the success of knowledge strategies is a responsibility of knowledge managers.

• How does context, currency of the knowledge, timing, usefulness, and transferability related to value?

• In this example, the value or success if measured on the target objective, the specific delivery targets, and the strategies.

• The Pharmacist’s knowledge must be current, useful, and transferable to the target delivery (payer/insurer, provider, public policy, or the patient).

• This shows that metrics are multidimensional. Chose your endpoint. Dr. Roxanne Ward Zaghab, 2012

• The Patents filed and awarded

• The Centers established (trademarks)

• Licensing income and agreements

• Partnership Agreements

Protect Knowledge?

I thought we were suppose to share it? Reuse it? Build on it?

• So value can be captured for the organization

• Protect it from global competitors, black markets and mimicry

• Clarify ownership before entering into partnerships and R&D Agreements

• Ensure continuity during disaster and emergency situations

• Must seal off from internal pressures; set boundaries in product development

There are two conferences in Week Six. Both are required.

As an exercise in knowledge sharing and reuse, each student will access, read and provide information back to the class from one of the references provided by the instructor on the previous slide (no wikis) or an scholarly reference. Type in the title of your knowledge sharing as a new main topic. Provide a brief paragraph on a small but meaningful piece of information that all knowledge managers should know to be effective (i.e. what trademarks are covered or not protected.) Each student must have a unique contribution.

Internal Protections: Practices at Apple

Apple is one of the most innovative (and profitable) companies in the marketplace today. They balance a company culture of sharing and innovation while also quickly controlling internal sharing during product development. The excerpt from Inside Apple provides a vivid example of internal controls.

Business Continuity and Protection of Knowledge

• Emergency situations and natural disasters pose a real threat to knowledge managers.

• Highlights and practices in university business continuity and the protection of vulnerable knowledge can be examined in detail in the required reading this week (Zaghab, 2011).

An option reading is attached (Zaghab, 2011). This model identifies gaps in the existing knowledge management systems, technology, human resources, and routines.
