Standard specification vs. “high specification” based on a number of factors:
• Technological capabilities.• Water depth.• Load capacity.• Age (15 years and older)

Basic technical installation
Power plant.5 – 6 Diesel generators.
Consumers, the main consumer is the drilling package consisting of mostly SCR (silicon controlled rectifiers) controlled DC motors.
• Mudpumps: 6 X 800 HP DC motors.
• Drawworks : 3 X 800 HP DC motors.
• Topdrive : 1 X 1000HP DC motor.

Characteristics of a speed controlled DC Motor
In the diagram below you can see what the results are from the power plant of the B391 using DC speed controllers. This is what we refer to as Voltage notches.

• Old Equipment.In the past this wasn’t really a problem on our rigs, most equipment was Analog, which wasn’t noticeably influenced by a “bad” quality Power Plant. Most of our rigs were built early 80’s.
• New Equipment.
Over the years we have been continuously upgrading older equipment with newer microprocessor based equipment. It is this equipment which is posing problems.

The first problems started surfacing about 10 years ago.
• Washing Machine failures.• UPS damage.• Galley equipment failure.

Alternative solutions
Over the past few years we have tried a few solutions to combat our equipment failures.
• Inline filters (chokes) on the equipment power supplies.• Airco.• Washing machines.
• Rotary converters.• Laundry.

A professional approach
In 2015 we planned to install a new “all” electric crane. A guaranteed solution was necessary. Hyteps was confident to solve our Power problem. A combination of inline filters (chokes) with an active Harmonic filter was proposed as solution.
• The Inline filters (chokes) would reduce the effect of the Notching.
• The active harmonic filters would take care of the harmonics higher up the spectrum.

Huisman Crane
The Huisman Crane was designed according to Lloyds register specifications.
• THD may not exceed 8%.
We had measured excesses of 18 – 20% in two previous surveys.
The risk of having a safety critical piece of equipment not performing was just no option.

Installation achievements:
After the Hyteps commissioning we were relieved to see visible results:
• Huisman Crane is operating without any issues.• The galley equipment. (steam cooker)• Washing machines.• UPS failures.
