Petrel TIPS&TRICKS from SCME&P SOLUTIONS

Well Sections in *Petrel 2015

Since Release 2011, there have been major changes to the Well Section feature in Petrel, including a few new features added in Petrel 2015. This is the first in a series of TIPS&TRICKS about the new changes for Petrel 2015.

In this article, we will discuss XY hinges and Background wells.

Future articles will explore how to:

Collapse vertical wells so the deviated tracks can better be seen

Swap wells in single‐well Well sections

Add surfaces from the Input pane to the background

Display major and minor gridlines in the back ground

XY Hinges

Adds hinges to the X‐Section which are not located at a well

1. Create or activate a Well Section. 2. Open the Settings of the X‐Section. Go to the Definition tab and the Hinges sub‐tab.

3. Click the Append XY hinge to x‐section icon . 4. Click on the new Hinge, change the name and enter X and Y values 5. Click the Move up or Move down arrows to change the location of the hinge in the cross‐section. 6. Click OK

7. The new hinge appears in all windows where it is displayed.

8. Change the way the display looks using the X‐section Settings Hinge tab. 9. Set Parameters 10. Click OK

Background Wells

Adds wells in the background of the Well Section

Method 1:

1. Create or activate a Well Section. 2. Open the Settings of the X‐Section. Go to the Definition tab and the Background Wells sub‐tab.

3. In the Input pane, highlight the names of the wells to add as Background wells. 4. In the Settings of the X‐Section, click on the Blue arrow to enter the wells in the box. 5. Click OK

6. The new background wells appear in the Well Sections.

7. Open the Background wells tab of the Settings of the X‐Section. 8. Change parameters as needed. 9. Click OK and the display changes.

Method 2:

1. Create or activate a Well Section. 2. Open the Settings of the X‐Section. Go to the Definition tab and the Background Wells sub‐tab

3. Check the box in front of Define by distance limit. 4. Enter a Distance limit for orthogonal projection of the wells. 5. The wells that will be projected appear in the list. 6. Click OK

8. Open the Background wells tab of the Settings of the X‐Section. 9. Change parameters as needed. 10. Click OK and the display changes.

Add Logs to Background Wells

1. In the Global Well Logs folder, right‐click on the log to appear in the background wells and choose Add to global template Background well Left (or Right) log track
