Purpose
Ameren is an investor-owned electric and natural gas utility serving central and southern Illinois, mid-Missouri and the St. Louis metropolitan area. As a critical energy and infrastructure partner, Ameren is committed to the economic well-being of its service area communities. Ameren's economic development team supports community-based development organizations as they assist new and existing business customers grow and expand.
Ameren’s “Regional Workforce Profile” provides an industrial and demographic overview for a defined geographic area. This comprehensive assessment is intended to provide pertinent information about the region's economic base, competitive attributes and population and workforce trends in order to help guide local and regional development. By referencing historical, current and projected data, local development officials and prospective business investors can quantify the state of the region’s economy and workforce.
The Regional Workforce Profile is the product of Ameren’s collaboration with The Smart Solutions Group, a nationally recognized economic development consultant with access to federal and state economic, industry, occupation and demographic data sources.

Executive Summary
The Knox County, Illinois Labor Market Region is made up of seven counties in Illinois – Fulton,
Henry, Knox, McDonough, Mercer, Peoria, and Warren. The Knox County, Illinois Labor Market
Region has a population of almost 400,000 and the population remained steady (0%) over the past ten
years while the population of the State grew by 3% over this same time period. The Working Age
Population of the Region is over 276,000 (ages 15-69), which is 70% of the Region’s total population.
Employment in the Region is over 182,000 in 2014 and it has seen a very small decline (0.4%) since
2004. Over the next ten years, employment in the Region is projected to grow by 5.4%, which is below
the 8.1% growth projected for the State. The Region’s three largest industry sectors are:
1. Health Care & Social Assistance – 34,050 jobs
2. Government – 28,292 jobs
3. Retail Trade– 19,576 jobs
The Region’s Earnings per Worker ($49,723) is 21% below the Earnings in the State and lower than the
Earnings nationwide ($57,695). The highest paying industries in the Region are Utilities, Mining,
Quarrying and Oil and Gas Extraction; and Manufacturing. The industries with the highest Location
Quotient, which is a measure of regional industry concentration, are Utilities, Health Care & Social
Assistance, and Crop and Animal Production.
Manufacturing is a key sector in the Region’s economy. Over the past 10 years, employment in the
Manufacturing sector has declined by (17%). But it is projected to remain steady over the next ten
years. The five Manufacturing industries with the highest employment are:

From 2004 to 2014, Wood Product Manufacturing grew by 154 jobs, making it the fastest growing
manufacturing industry in the Region with a growth rate of 54%. The two highest paying
Manufacturing industries are Machinery Manufacturing ($117,386), and Chemical Manufacturing
($94,774).
Gas Plant Operators were the fastest growing Production Occupation in the Region over the past 10
years (124%). The Production Occupations that have the highest concentration (Occupation Location
Quotient) in the Region are:

The percentage of adults in the seven county Region (age 25 and older) that have at least a High School
Diploma is higher in the Region (89%) to the State (87%) and the U.S. (85%). The percentage of adults
that have a Bachelor’s Degree or Higher is 23% in the Region compared to 31% in the State and 29% in
the nation.
In 2013 the postsecondary institutions in the Region awarded the greatest number (1,039) of Degrees
and Certificates in Health Professions & Related Programs.

Sources ECONOMIC MODELING SPECIALISTS INT’L (EMSI)
EMSI is an aggregator of over 90 different federal and state data sources of economic, industry,
occupation, education completion, and demographic data. They provide national, state, metropolitan
statistical area (MSA), and county data for the 1,100 NAICS industries, the nearly 800 occupations in the
Bureau of Labor Statistic’s Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) System, and education completion
data in the IPEDS database that are published by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for
Education Statistics.
The majority of the data used for this report came from EMSI’s second quarter 2015 data release.
