AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Congratulations to our Under 14 GIRLS & BOYS who represented our club recently at the Australian Junior Club Championships. Both teams worked incredibly hard to firstly qualify and then prepare to take on the best teams in the country during the week long tournament held in Newcastle in the September holidays. Our boys fought hard all week and finished 4th overall – a fine achievement to be recognised as the fourth best team in the country. Our girls finished 1st beating Bendigo in the grand final. Winning this prestigious tournament is an awesome achievement and something that the girls and coaches should be incredibly proud of. Congratulations to everyone involved in getting these kids on the floor and to the kids for their personal and team successes – we are incredibly proud of your achievements and how you conducted yourself while representing Raiders.

HISTORY Knox Basketball is one of the largest basketball associations in Australia with over 1000 teams competing every week in our Junior and Senior basketball competitions. Knox Basketball was established in 1965 to provide youth from the City of Knox with a sporting and social infrastructure to develop and promote personal, team and social skills in a sporting environment. In 1974 founding members Alf Stevens, Alice Jago and Heather Kemp began an after school competition at the Mossfield Avenue facility in Ferntree Gully. In 1980 its headquarters moved to a 3 court facility in Park Crescent, Boronia which was later expanded to six courts in 1989. The first Raiders Representative teams began playing in 1981 with 8 girls and 9 boys teams. The representative program originally used St Joseph’s as its home court until three additional courts were built at Boronia in 1989. In 2012, Knox Basketball in partnership with Knox City Council opened the brand new, state-of-the-art State Basketball Centre in Wantirna South that adds an additional 6 courts under the control of Knox Basketball. Knox Basketball’s Junior Domestic Competition is arguably the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Sixteen clubs make up the Junior Domestic Competition, with in excess of 5,500 players. With an average of 700 teams competing each weekend, there is a total of 22 courts that are utilised each week in order for the large number of participants to play. KBI is managed by a board that provides the strategic direction of the association including the conduct, encouragement, promotion and administration of basketball throughout Victoria, the City of Knox and its surrounding areas. We conduct introductory basketball programs for children of all abilities and ages, school holiday camps and a School’s program that visits over 80 schools within the local community. Players are selected to play in Knox Raider teams which represent Knox in elite competitions such as the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL), Big V Victorian Youth Championship and Big V Championship competition. Knox Raiders has a proud history of club success and individual athlete success. We have had many players achieve State Selection, play in the WNBL or NBL and play overseas at various US colleges. Within our current program there are sure to be a number of players who will also achieve this success.

STRUCTURE Knox Junior Raiders is a sub division of Knox Basketball Inc. with representation on the Knox Basketball Inc. Board.

Page 5: KNOX JUNIOR RAIDERS COMMITTEE - Knox Basketball · Knox Junior Raiders is led by the Knox Junior Raiders Committee consisting of Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary, Parent representatives

Knox Junior Raiders is led by the Knox Junior Raiders Committee consisting of Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary, Parent representatives (girls and boys) and general committee members. In addition, we have the option to co-op additional members. Parent representatives are elected each year. Each nominee must be nominated and seconded by a member of Knox Junior Raiders. Our Basketball Development Manager (BDM) is Matt Shanahan. Matt is responsible for the structure of the KJR program, player development and coaching appointments and development. There is also a commitment to provide a pathway and opportunities for our juniors to progress through to our senior program. In addition to the BDM role, our Girls Program Co-ordinator – Bedrich Fliszar & Boy’s Program Co-ordinator – Darryl MacDonald are in place to provide support and guidance.

TEAMS Currently Knox Junior Raiders have approximately 42 teams spaning from Under 12 to Under 20 teams. However, team numbers and structure at each age group may change from year to year depending on player numbers, standard and the availability of quality coaches. All players are required to participate in a selection process each year and selection and team placement are NOT GUARANTEED. Consequently, all players must strive to improve their skills and display an attitude which demonstrates their desire to listen and learn. Unlike Junior Domestic, teams in the Knox Raiders Junior program have 10 players for the Under 12 to Under 16 age groups and up to 12 players for the Under 18 & Under 20 age groups. Team selections are made to provide a balance of player position, age and ability. Usually higher ranked teams will consist of more top age players and lower teams will have a greater number of younger age players. We appreciate that active children may play multiple sports, if this is the case; mutual agreement must be made between sports. Knox Junior Raiders expects that its members will not consider Basketball to be the secondary activity.

RULES AND REGULATIONS The purpose of the Representative Program is to develop teams, coaches and individual players to the maximum level of their ability. The program is designed for those who are committed to achieve and who are prepared to work hard and make sacrifices to stretch their ability. At all levels the Club aspires for its teams to realise their potential, to qualify for as high a grade as possible and to enjoy a successful season. To this end, the program will only enter teams where it believes a minimum standard of achievement has already been reached commensurate with the advanced stature of the program. We believe the variety of opposition, the prestige of the competition and the more stringent demands of basketball at both Metro and Eastern Regional level, provide special opportunities for development over and above those provided by domestic competition.

Page 6: KNOX JUNIOR RAIDERS COMMITTEE - Knox Basketball · Knox Junior Raiders is led by the Knox Junior Raiders Committee consisting of Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary, Parent representatives

PLAYER AND FAMILY COMMITMENTS Representative basketball is only for players with a serious intention to achieve and to contribute to team performance even when this involves some sacrifices to the individual. It is not for players wishing to necessarily play with other players of their choice or a specific team or coach. It takes a lot of commitment and dedication from the players as they strive to improve their basketball skills week after week but it also requires commitment and dedication from their parents. Whilst we require a large commitment by players and parents alike, we believe basketball offers many rewards. Many strong friendships can be forged during the years that children are involved with Knox Raiders. We would encourage you to become involved in your child getting to know his/her team mates and their parents. Enjoy the wins and celebrations and encourage the positive that will come from the experience.

COACHES Our coaching staff is made up of a group of valuable volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to see our players improve and develop both on the court and as people within our Knox Community. Knox Basketball provides ongoing assistance for any members of the community that would like to improve their understanding of the game and/or coaching standard. We run many coach the coaches training sessions to help further develop the career path of all our coaches. Our coaches give up their valuable time and knowledge to educate and teach the players. We would ask that you support them throughout the season because whilst styles may change from coach to coach - coaches all aim for the same result - to improve the players’ skills. All coaches within the competitions are currently screened under the Basketball Victoria By-Laws and have a current Working with Children's Check.

TEAM MANAGERS Each team requires a Team Manager (TM) for the season. The TM is appointed by the coach once the team has been decided. The role of TM is integral to the success of the team. They are responsible for ensuring that all communication from the club, the coaches or other sources is sent on to each player and that all families are kept abreast of all information. They are also the manager of the team funds, scoring rosters, uniforms, clash uniforms etc. NOTE: Usually the Team Manager is a parent of a child within the team. It is not acceptable to

have a partner of the coaching staff appointed as the Team Manager.

COMPETITION Representative Basketball is played on a Friday Night at associated venues across the state. The VJBL is arguably the largest competition of its kind, offering a graduated system of junior basketball.

Page 7: KNOX JUNIOR RAIDERS COMMITTEE - Knox Basketball · Knox Junior Raiders is led by the Knox Junior Raiders Committee consisting of Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary, Parent representatives

Representative Basketball was designed to give keen junior basketballers an opportunity to participate at a more competitive level than the domestic Saturday afternoon / night competitions by competing against composite teams from other Associations within Victoria.

Representative Basketball is a steep learning curve and takes new players coming into the competition time to get used to the “pressure on the ball” type of game and tougher defence but it is still a game and one which junior players should enjoy. At present, the representative season is played for about 40 weeks of the year commencing mid-November and going through to September the following year. The season is broken down into three phases of competition.

NOVEMBER: Spring Phase (Pre Grading phase)

NOVEMBER to MARCH: Grading Phase (These two different phases decide where the teams will play throughout the main season)

MARCH to SEPTEMBER: Championship Phase There are currently three levels of competition within “Representative Basketball”

Victorian Championship - known as 'VC' and is the highest level junior teams can play. This competition is split at the half way point to form VC Championship & VC Reserve

Victorian Junior League 1-4 - this was previously known as Metro and is the 2nd level;

Eastern Regional / North West Regional - this is the 3rd level. This level is regionalised to minimise travel.

AGE GROUPING One of the most frequently asked questions is around “Age” groupings. Junior Representative Basketball Age Groups are:

Under 12 eligible players must be under 12 as at 31.12.2017

Under 14 eligible players must be under 14 as at 31.12.2017

Under 16 eligible players must be under 16 as at 31.12.2017

Under 18 eligible players must be under 18 as at 31.12.2017

Under 20 eligible players must be under 20 as at 31.12.2017

This is quite often a shock to parents who are concerned that their child may be coming up against much older players. All junior players will normally spend two years in each of the age groups. For those starting out or who are bottom age players, they are placed in comparable easier or lower grades. They may come up against older players on the odd occasion. The age group classifications for all players is no different to domestic basketball where there are also top and bottom age players playing in the age groups. The VJBL is one of the strongest breeding grounds for elite players graduating to senior ranks. Most associations treat their junior representative programs as such and provide opportunities for players to advance.

COMMUNICATION The first point of contact is your Team Manager. Your Team Manager is there to assist in any way possible in order to free the Coach up to be able to do what they do best - Coach. However, in saying that, if you wish to discuss an issue with your coach you should make a time to speak with him/her at a non-stressful time, NOT DIRECTLY BEFORE OR AFTER A GAME. Members of the KJR Committee are also available most Sundays if you wish to raise any issues or concerns with them. We ask that issues or concerns are put in writing and forwarded to the KJR committee so that they can be addressed accordingly. The Basketball Development Manager (BDM) is responsible for player and coach development and is also an important point of contact for all parents and players. The Girls and Boys Co-ordinators are also available to discuss any concerns you may have as players or parents. (Please make an appointment if you wish to raise any issues with the BDM or Co-ordinators or any member of the KJR Committee.)

TEAM APP Knox Junior Raiders has chosen to use TEAM APP to communicate with its members & the broader Raiders community. There are no restrictions on how many members of a family sign up to TEAM APP – the more the merrier. Please download this free app to your electronic device to ensure that you are kept up to date with the latest important information.

TRAINING

Training is compulsory for all teams, with most team trainings held on Sunday mornings. Sessions are typically 1½ to 2 hours long and held at either, Knox Stadium, SBC or Fairhills. In addition to Sunday morning, most teams will also be required to attend Mid Week training – coaches will advise you of your mid-week commitment. Midweek training is generally conducted at Knox, SBC or Fairhills.

Page 9: KNOX JUNIOR RAIDERS COMMITTEE - Knox Basketball · Knox Junior Raiders is led by the Knox Junior Raiders Committee consisting of Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary, Parent representatives

The cost of mid-week training has been built into the Junior Raiders fees for the 2017 season. All players are required to attend each training session for your team. If this is not possible, advanced notification is to be given to the Team Manager and/or Coach. Coaches are within their rights to bench a player if absent from training without a reason. NOTE: All Players are expected to be at the training venue at least 20 minutes prior (or as set

by the coach) to the commencement time in the correct KJR uniform so they are dressed, warmed up and ready to train on time.

A player must be dedicated to training hard, learning new skills and fitting into a team pattern. Team training should be supplemented with individual practice during the week. It is within the rights of the coaching staff to call additional trainings where they see fit. These extra sessions are required to be approved by the Co-ordinator of the applicable boys or girl’s co-ordinator.

KNOX DOMESTIC COMPETITION All girls & boys that play for Knox Junior Raiders MUST also be REGISTERED & PLAY for a domestic club in the Knox Junior Domestic Competition (Saturday/Sunday competition in both SUMMER & WINTER Seasons) Any request for variation to this rule must be applied for in writing using a Request for Exemption form available from the Knox Basketball website, KJR Committee or Coaching panel. Return the completed form to the Junior Raiders Chairperson who will pass it onto the Exemption Committee, for consideration. Exemptions must be approved before it becomes active.

PLAYER INJURY OR ILLNESS Players who are ill or unable to play must notify the TEAM MANAGER as soon as they are aware that they are unable to participate. A medical certificate is required for an injury or illness requiring more than one week’s recovery. A COPY OF THE CERTIFICATE MUST BE FORWARDED TO THE KJR COMMITTEE WITHIN 10 DAYS OF DIAGNOSIS & CONSULTATION. Certificates must be emailed to: [email protected] and

[email protected] This certificate can be used to gain credit for missed games and will ensure that your child does not miss out on qualifying for finals. NOTE: Please note that if a player wishes to train or play earlier than stated on the original

medical certificate then another certificate is required from a practitioner stating that the player is able to return to participation. This is to be forwarded to the KJR Committee prior to playing. It is required no later than Thursday before the game, in order that the

Page 10: KNOX JUNIOR RAIDERS COMMITTEE - Knox Basketball · Knox Junior Raiders is led by the Knox Junior Raiders Committee consisting of Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary, Parent representatives

competition organisers can be notified. NOTE: Players who are recovering from an injury or non-infectious illness are encouraged to

attend the game in Raiders attire and sit on the bench with the team.

SCORING Scoring is an important duty and we are obligated to supply a competent Bench Official for each game. It is a requirement of every player to supply a competent scorer throughout the season to complete their rostered scoring duties. If you do not know how to score or do not feel competent to score, it is your responsibility to ensure that you attend a "scoring school" held by KJR at the commencement of each new season or to partner up with another parent who can teach you how to score. Not knowing how to or not feeling confident is not an acceptable reason to not score for the team. If you cannot score your rostered game, you must advise the Team Manager as soon as possible so that other arrangements can be made. Scoring School & Shot Clock School sessions are planned in early November for all interested parents. We strongly advise for all new parents to the program and any other parents who feel like a refresher to attend these sessions. All teams playing VJL in the U18 & U20 age groups will be using a shot clock this year. The KJR Committee strongly advises all parents of these age groups to attend the scoring & shot clock school so that you are prepared for this new element to your child’s game.

All Knox apparel can be obtained through the sports shop at State Basketball Centre. All players must have the required full uniform (training and playing) by the commencement of the Representative season. It is important to understand that Players wearing non-approved apparel will be subject to disciplinary action and review.

COMPETITION GAMES Competition games are held on a Friday night. The venues depend on the grading of the team and may be as wide afield as Broadmeadows, Bellarine, Geelong, Dromana and some country venues like Bendigo & Ballarat for Victorian Championship grades. Players are expected to be at the game venue at least thirty minutes before the commencement time to allow for warm up and team discussion.

FINALS QUALIFICATION All players must sign the back of the scoresheet BEFORE EACH GAME THEY PLAY to ensure they qualify for finals and crossover games. NOTE: All players in each grade must play 40% of games to qualify for finals With the transition to a computerised scoring system, the importance of lodging medical certificates in a timely manner has increased significantly. Please ensure that you obtain and submit a medical certificate if your child is injured.

REFEREES The referees are an important part of the game and, while we may not like their decisions at times, verbal or other abuse of referees is unacceptable behaviour and also sets a bad example to the children. A copy of the Basketball Victoria’s Code of Conduct is available on the Basketball Victoria Website.

Page 13: KNOX JUNIOR RAIDERS COMMITTEE - Knox Basketball · Knox Junior Raiders is led by the Knox Junior Raiders Committee consisting of Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary, Parent representatives

We encourage every parent/player to read this. Players at all levels are expected to conduct themselves in a manner which does not bring discredit to themselves, their parents and their club.

Therefore, any conduct which is unbecoming will be dealt with either by a first-time warning or subsequently, suspension. This includes behaviour at training, before, during and after a game when you can clearly be identified as a Knox Junior Raider. This also applies to teams and their supporters who attend tournaments whether in Victoria or interstate. All supporters are also expected to abide by the Basketball Victoria Code of Conduct. The Codes of Conduct can be located on the Basketball Victoria website and are on display at SBC and Boronia stadiums.

SOCIAL MEDIA Social Media is a large part of today's way of life. Unfortunately, this can sometimes be used in a negative way. Whilst we appreciate and acknowledge our players, parents and members right to contribute content on social networking sites, we also know that inappropriate behaviour on such sites has the potential to tarnish the reputation of our Association and players etc. With this in mind, Knox Basketball Inc. is in full compliance with the VJBL rules and regulations concerning Social Media. "All members must refrain from posting, sending, forwarding or using in any way, any inappropriate material that may cause insult, offence, intimidation or humiliation to any of our players, parents, members or associates within the basketball community. INTERVENUE PASSES Inter venue passes are available to both spectators and players, with the exceptions that a player MUST pay at the venue at which he or she is playing irrespective of whether an entry fee has been paid earlier at another stadium as a spectator. Inter venue passes must be asked for from the door keeper of the venue you first visit.

SENIOR RAIDERS TEAM – BIG V KJR teams will be rostered on to help at BIG V games throughout the season. This provides the young junior raiders with a unique experience to access the club’s senior players and provide the juniors with an insight into what their basketball future could involve. All families are expected to participate and usually involves approx. 3 hours of time once or twice a season.

SPONSORSHIP The Club is always on the lookout for POTENTIAL SPONSORS. If you or someone you know may be interested in the prospect of promoting a business to over 400 families with the club as well as the wider community that visits our venues, please call the Knox Office and speak to the CEO. There may be many sponsorship deals available that can be tailored to suit your needs.

CONTACTING THE VJBL Under no circumstances are Coaches, Assistant Coaches, Team Managers, Parents or Players to contact the VJBL offices. All communications with the VJBL MUST go through our club delegate. This is a mandated rule put in place by the VJBL. For every instance that someone other than the delegate contacts the VJBL the club receives a fine. In all cases, with any concerns you have regarding your experience in Junior Raiders, please email [email protected]. We will respect and uphold your confidentiality in all circumstances.

TEAM KITTY Each team must be self-supporting, and your Team Manager is responsible for collecting and managing the income of the team throughout the season. They in conjunction with the Coaching

Page 16: KNOX JUNIOR RAIDERS COMMITTEE - Knox Basketball · Knox Junior Raiders is led by the Knox Junior Raiders Committee consisting of Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary, Parent representatives

staff are responsible for deciding how to best spend the money for the team’s benefit. TM’s are to collect $50 per month from each player (usually on the 1st Sunday of the month) and a receipt will be provided for all payments. Money should be collected in the following months: November April July December May August February June September March This money will cover the payment of the sheet each week with any surplus funds carried forward to be used for tournaments or team functions including the end of season breakup party. Team Managers will keep a copy of a spreadsheet documenting all in’s and out’s and will make this available to any parent that requests to review it during the season. They will also be asked to submit this spreadsheet to the committee for review 3 times over the season. Parents are advised that the monthly payments should be made in a timely manner, failure to do so could affect your child’s opportunity to play. Monies collected in the kitty are not available for refund should a player be unavailable to play or unable to attend a team function or the end of season break up party.

PAY/PLAY RULE It is important for all players and their parents to understand that monthly fee collection is required to be paid to you each month regardless of the player’s availability. The blanket rule is that a player must pay whether he/she plays or not. The only exception to this rule is long term sickness/injury i.e. out for 4 or more consecutive games. Holidays do not count and the player must pay if they take holidays during the playing season. Any questions you have regarding this policy should be directed to a member of the KJR Committee.
