170th Annual General Meeting

New Minister

The  170th Annual  meeting  of  Knox was  held  on  May  5  as  part  of  the worship service. The Annual Report, from  each  of  the  committees  of Knox,  was  approved  along  with  the following reports. Chinese Ministry Review Task Group. J. Ma and M. Walker  presented  the report  that  was  approved  at  the March  2019  Council  meeting.    The 

report  highlighted  how  the  ministry has changed over eleven years and noted  that  the  needs  of  the  group has  also  changed.  The  action  item specifies  that  the  Chinese  Ministry Steering  team  will  meet  with  the Ministry  and  Personnel  committee and  our  new  minister,  Rev.  Bright Yun,  to develop a new staff position description  that  will  address  these needs. 

Bob Lundy, Bob Spencer, Rev. Bright Yun and Russ Gomme at the Men's Saturday breakfast. Rev. Yun is will start as the new minister at Knox on July 1, 2019.  His first Worship service and Communion will be on July 7. 

The contract with Richard Wang,  for  the original  staff  position,  would  not  be renewed  when  it  ends  June  30,  2019. We  thank  Richard  for  the  contributions he  has  made  over  the  years  to  the development  of  our  Knox  Chinese Ministry.Memorial Committee Project  L.  Lundy  outlined  a  project  to  enlarge the Chancel platform at the cost of about $28,000.  The  cost  will  be  covered entirely  from  the  Memorial  Fund.  The work  will  done  in  early  August  and include  removing  a  few  of  the  front pews. Doors Open 2019 EventJ.  McAllister  provided  an  update  on Doors Open at Knox on May 25 and 26, 2019.  He  explained  that  it's  a  unique opportunity  for  Knox  to  be  among  150 buildings  on  display  for  the  City­wide event. The next Annual Meeting ­ May 3, 2020.

New Member ProfileElizabeth joined Knox recently.

I  grew  up  in  Birch  Cliff, south  Scarborough.  My parents  moved  to  the area  shortly  after  they were  married  in September  1939,  had  3 children  of  which  I  was 

the  youngest.  My  family  was  very  involved  in  Church (Birch  Cliff  United  at  Warden Ave.  and  Kingston  Road) and I was christened, confirmed and married there. I am very  proud  to  say  that  I  was  one  of  the  little  children chosen  to  turn  the  sod  for  the  addition  in  1958. To  this day, “Onward Christian Soldiers" brings tears to my eyes as  I  remember  the  congregation  marching  out  of  the original  part  of  the  church  as  we  followed  the  choir  for the sod turning ceremony. Both my Dad and sister sang in the choir and I still can envision their burgundy robes, the  ladies  sporting  burgundy  mortar  board  with  tassel and the white starched collar.My  husband  David  and  I  were  married  for  almost  40 years  and  have  two  children.  We    moved  a  couple  of times,  but  continued  to  worship  at  Birch  Cliff.  Our daughter Becky has  two children James and Claire and our  son  Douglas  has  two  little  girls  Mackenzie  and Madison.  Special  time  for  me  was  when  I  changed my name to “Gran”I  retired 3 years ago  from Toronto Public Library. Loved my  job  serving  the  public,  especially  seeing  the  young ones come in. I made sure I stayed at least 25 years so I could get my gold watch. :)

When  our  children  were  young,  we  as  a  family  would attend  the  Christmas  Eve  service  at  Knox  rather  than making the trek down to Birch Cliff. We loved the feel of this church from the very beginning.I started attending Knox full time in March 2013. Walking past the cemetery on the way in, I often reflect on those that walked before me. Over  the years as  I sat enjoying the  service,  many  times  I  would  say,  I  must  have  my membership  transferred.  But,  I  just  could  not  out  my family  ties  to  Birch  Cliff,  I  kept  dragging my  feet! What pushed  me  was  the  fact  that  Rev.  Rob  Selby  was leaving. He had been so kind  to me  from  the moment  I started  attending.  Let  talk  last minute!  I  think  it was  his 2nd last Sunday that I had my membership transferred.I felt so special when Ross asked me to face the choir as they  sang.  Such  a  memorable  service  as  I  also  lit  the memorial  candle. My  heart was  full  as  I was welcomed personally by so many alter the service.Although I am newly retired, I think I am busier now than when I was working :) My family is small but we are very close and Gran attends everything! I am very hooked on my  family  history  and  genealogy.  I  am  keeper  of  the records.  For  my  65th  birthday,  I  treated  myself  to  a vacation  to  Ireland  and  Scotland.  I  hadn't  there  since 1975  and  this  time  I was  able  to  track  down  the  house where my Dad was born.I am honoured to tell people that I am a member of Knox United  ­ Agincourt.  I  am  not  great  on  leading  but more than willing to help.

It’s worship, as usual,  at Knox Agincourt United Church during the summer – worship services Sundays at 10:00 with  the choir  inspiring sermons, coffee  time.   And don’t forget, the new minister Rev. Bright Yun, starts on July 1.

Summer Bulletins and Announcement DeadlinesA one­sheeter re­usable order of service will be used for the summer months, July and August. An announcement sheet will be done.  If you have announcements to share during the summer, contact the church office.The  deadline  for  August  and  the  beginning  of September, the deadline is Monday, July 15.

Worship Corner

Pastoral CareA  very  successful  Visiting  Elders meeting was held on Monday May 13th.  Twenty  people  braved  the nasty  weather  to  watch  and discuss  the  documentary “Revolutionizing  Dementia  Care”. Dr.  David  Sheard  explained  “The 

Butterfly Model” which is now being used in several Care homes here in Ontario.Our Autumn meeting  for  Visiting  Elders  is  scheduled  for Monday October 7th. As always, everyone is welcome to join in the discussion and fellowship.

Summer Worship Volunteers Needed:   The  Scripture  Reader  schedule  for  September  2019  to June  2020  is  now  being  complied.  Please  contact  the church office or the Chair of Worship if you’d like to be a reader or if you’d like to be removed from the current list.   The  response  to  the Memorial  Candles  was  very  good this  year,  thank  you.    So,  just  a  reminder  to  check  the notice board  in The Heritage Room. Check early  if you’d like your preferred date to light the Memorial candles.

Out Of The ColdSixteen  community  organizations  and  faith  based groups,  from  early  November  to  mid­April,  take  turns providing  Friday  dinner  and  Saturday  breakfast  and  a take away  lunch. With  the support  team from Dixon Hall guests have a safe and warm place to sleep and access to  a  housing worker. Tokens  are  provided  on Saturdays for guests to travel to another shelter location.For  the  2018­2019  season,  820  guests  attended  Friday dinner with 375 sleeping over....estimatedAnnually  over  300  volunteers  at  the  Knox  Site  dedicate their  time  and  ongoing  support  to  make  the  program  a success.
