Thank you for making the first month of the 2019-20 Knoxville Symphony season such a smashing success! We kicked things off in style, and all of us on stage fed off of the incredible energy from every one of you.

Our season now is in full swing, and we want to keep that great momentum going! Our News Sentinel Pops Series opens with a dazzling set of classic hits performed by the Neil Diamond tribute band Super Diamond. Neil Diamond’s songs still stand in the spotlight of pop culture, and their continued vitality renders them anything but ’oldies’! Whether your favorite is ’Cherry Cherry,’ ’Solitary Man,’ or my personal favorite, ’Sweet Caroline’ (anybody who knows my wife’s name will know why!), Super Diamond promises to tug at the nostalgic, happy memories of your life.

Nostalgia also carries into our second Moxley Carmichael Masterworks program of the season, featuring Grieg’s unforgettable Piano Concerto in A minor, inspired in part by the Norwegian folk tunes of his youth. I am delighted to welcome an electrifying pianist, my friend Natasha Paremski, to Knoxville to make her KSO debut. Each of the pieces on this program represents milestones of ’arrival’ for their composers, when they moved from being promising young talents to indisputable stars of the symphonic community. If you are a Masterworks or Chamber Classics regular, the name Jessie Montgomery is likely starting to become familiar, as we have performed the music of this distinctive living composer in each of the last three seasons. Her most significant work to date, Records from a Vanishing City is inspired by Montgomery’s memories of the music that surrounded her growing up on Manhattan’s Lower East Side in the 80s and 90s. Opening the program is Dvořák’s stirring Seventh Symphony, with its memorably Slavonic third movement. The most nationalistic of his mature symphonies, Dvořák’s Seventh is meant to evoke the political struggles of his countrymen as they tried to establish a Czech nation.

Beyond these series, this month the KSO also performs Young People’s Concerts for thousands of elementary school students and continues our dedicated activities in classrooms, libraries and hospitals throughout East Tennessee. MUSICIAN ROSTER

The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra is flourishing under the transformative leadership of music director Aram Demirjian. Through bold programming, innovative collaborations and Aram’s dynamic presence both on stage and in the community, the KSO has attained new artistic heights, sustained significant ticket revenue increases and received national recognition for its achievements over the 3 years of his tenure.

The 2019-20 KSO season extends and intensifies Aram’s commitment to fostering community through collaboration in the concert hall. Local partnerships include performances with the Knoxville Choral Society, contemporary ensemble Nief-Norf, Street Beatz Studios and Go! Contemporary Dance Works, plus sought-after guest artists including Natasha Paremski, Bella Hristova and Grammy©-nominated violinist Philippe Quint. Quint will perform the world premiere of Michael Schachter’s Violin Concerto: Cycle of Life, a joint commission of the KSO and the Knoxville Museum of Art. Aram and the KSO continue to champion American music with works by Barber, Bernstein, James P. Johnson, Florence Price and George Walker, plus living composers Avner Dorman, Jennifer Higdon, Missy Mazzoli, Jessie Montgomery and Dosia McKay. Further highlights include Handel’s Messiah, Mahler’s First Symphony, Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony and a yearlong celebration of Beethoven’s 250th anniversary. Most notably, the KSO will perform in Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as one of only four organizations featured at SHIFT: A Festival of American Orchestras. Aram will conduct a program highlighting Knoxville’s artistic history called “Knoxville: Artists at Home,” featuring soprano Julia Bullock, poets RB Morris and RheaSunshine and a brass ensemble from University of Tennessee.

Aram has appeared with the nation’s top orchestras and maintains a close relationship with The Philadelphia Orchestra, with which he appears three times in the 2019-20 season. He also makes subscription debuts with the Tucson Symphony, Portland Symphony and the Orlando Philharmonic. Other recent engagements include the Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Omaha, San Antonio and St. Louis symphonies, the Minnesota and Sarasota orchestras, and the Louisiana Philharmonic.

Aram is involved in a substantial breadth of education and community initiatives with the goal of ensuring that everyone, regardless of age, background or circumstance, has access to great symphonic music. A gifted public speaker, he is a passionate and vocal advocate for the arts, and he regularly addresses to community and business organizations advocating for arts non-profits and arts education in our society.

Aram is the winner of the 2019 Career Assistance Award from the Solti Foundation U.S. and the 2011 Robert J. Harth Conducting Prize from the Aspen Music Festival, and he has appeared in masterclasses with renowned conductors Bernard Haitink and Kurt Masur. Aram holds a joint Bachelor of Arts in Music and Government from Harvard University and a Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting from New England Conservatory.

Super Diamond San Francisco’s Super Diamond has become one of the most popular live shows at major nightclubs, theaters, ballrooms and public events throughout the United States. Natasha ParemiskiBorn in Moscow, Natasha moved to the United States at the age of 8 and became a U.S. citizen shortly thereafter. Natasha began her piano studies at the age of 4 with Nina Malikova at Moscow’s Andreyev School of Music. She then studied at San Francisco Conservatory of Music before moving to New York to study with Pavlina Dokovska at Mannes College of Music, from which she graduated in 2007. Natasha made her professional debut at age nine with the El Camino Youth Symphony in California. At the age of fifteen she debuted with Los Angeles Philharmonic and recorded two discs with Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra under Dmitry Yablonsky. Natasha was awarded several very prestigious artist prizes at a very young age, including the Gilmore Young

Artists prize in 2006 at the age of 18, the Prix Montblanc in 2007, the Orpheum Stiftung Prize in Switzerland. In September 2010, she was awarded the Classical Recording Foundation’s Young Artist of the Year. Natasha has performed with major orchestras in North America including Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, Houston Symphony, NAC Orchestra in Ottawa. She tours extensively in Europe with such orchestras as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Moscow Philharmonic, under the direction of conductors including Peter Oundjian, Andres Orozco-Estrada, and Jeffrey Kahane. Natasha has toured with Gidon Kremer and the Kremerata Baltica in Latvia, Benelux, the UK and Austria and performed with the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra in Taipei.

Symphony No. 7 in D minor, Opus 70 (1885)

AntonínDvořákwasborninMühlhausen,Bohemia (now Nelahozeves, the Czech Republic), on September 8, 1841, and died in Prague on May 1, 1904. The first performance of the SymphonyNo. 7 took place at St. James’s Hall in London, England, on April 22, 1885, with the composer conducting the London Philharmonic Society. The Symphony No.7isscoredforpiccolo,twoflutes,twooboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, timpani, and strings.

Approximate performance time is thirty-fiveminutes.

Antonín Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony, Opus 95 (1893) (“From the New World”) is his most well-known and performed. But many commentators favor the Seventh as the Czech composer’s greatest achievement in this genre. It is true that Dvořák composed this Symphony with singular ambition and enthusiasm.

In June of 1884, The London Philharmonic Society nominated Dvořák as an Honorary Member and requested that he compose a new symphony. Dvořák hoped that his new creation would receive international acclaim in the manner of the works of his friend and idol, the German composer, Johannes Brahms. In a December, 1884 letter to his friend, Antonín Rus, Dvořák wrote: “Now I am occupied with my new symphony (for London), and wherever I go I have nothing else in mind but my work, which must be such as to make a stir in the world and God grant that it may!”

Dvořák began work on his Seventh Symphony in December of 1884. He completed the score the following March. The Symphony premiered in St. James’s Hall in London on April 22,

1885, with Dvořák conducting the London Philharmonic Society. The premiere was a great success. Nevertheless, Dvořák decided to cut 40 bars from the second-movement Andante. The composer informed his publisher, Simrock: “Now I am convinced that there is not a single superfluous note in the work.”

A performance on January 16, 1887, by Hans Richter and the Vienna Philharmonic helped to solidify the reputation of the Seventh as a major symphonic work. However, Berlin concerts directed by Hans von Bülow on October 27 and 28, 1889, made the greatest impression. After those triumphant performances, Dvořák affixed a portrait of Bülow to the title page of the score, and added the following inscription: “Glory be to you! You brought this work to life!”

It is clear why the Seventh has inspired such respect and affection among those who love Dvořák’s music. While all Nine of Dvořák’s Symphonies offer considerable pleasure, it is perhaps the Seventh that marks the summit of his achievements in this realm. In the Seventh, Dvořák, like Brahms, demonstrates that the Classical-era musical structures advanced by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven do not inhibit Romantic expression. Quite the contrary, Dvořák’s presentation and ingenious development of a remarkable wealth of ideas produce a work of overwhelming momentum and impact.

The Symphony No. 7 is in four movements. The first (Allegro maestoso) is based upon two themes. The violas and cellos softly introduce the insinuating first principal theme that grows in volume and intensity. The woodwinds sing a lyrical, major-key waltz-like theme, marked dolce (“sweetly”), that in time also gains tremendous power. In a dramatic masterstroke, Dvořák concludes with a quiet, fragmented restatement of the opening theme. The slow-tempo second movement (Poco adagio) recalls its counterpart in the Brahms Third Symphony (1883), a work Dvořák greatly admired. The

third movement is a Scherzo (Vivace). The literal translation of the Italian word scherzo is “joke,” but there is little humor in this fiery movement, set in the home key of D minor. The stormy Finale (Allegro) gives every indication of maintaining a tragic mood to the work’s conclusion. Suddenly, and most unexpectedly, the orchestra erupts in a D-Major outburst, bringing the Symphony to a triumphant (but perhaps somewhat unsettling) resolution.

Records from a Vanishing City (2016)

Jessie Montgomery was born in New York City on December 8, 1981. The first performance of Records from a Vanishing City took place at Carnegie Hall in New York City on October 27, 2016, with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Records from a Vanishing Cityisscoredforflute,oboe,twoB-flatclarinets, bass clarinet, two bassoons, two horns, three trumpets, timpani, and strings.

Approximate performance time is thirteen minutes.

Records from a Vanishing City is a tone poem based on my recollections of the music that surrounded me as I grew up on Manhattan’s Lower East Side in the 1980s and 1990s. Artists, truth seekers, and cultures of all kinds defined our vibrant community. The embracing diversity burst out with an effortless everydayness in block parties, festivals, and shindigs of every sort. Partly because my parents were artists—but also because I just couldn’t help it—I soaked up all that surrounded me: Latin jazz, alternative rock, Western classical, avant-garde jazz, poetry, and Caribbean dance music, to name a few. A year before completing this work, a very dear family friend passed away and

it was decided that I would be the one to inherit a large portion of his eclectic record collection. James Rose was one of the many suns in the Lower East Side cosmos who often hosted parties and generous gatherings for our extended artist family. His record collection was a treasure trove of the great jazz recordings of the 1950s, 1960s and beyond—he was mad for John Coltrane, but also Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk and Ornette Coleman, as well as traditional folk artists from Africa, Asia and South America. In the process of imagining this piece, a particular track on a record of music from Angola caught my ear: a traditional lullaby which is sung in call and response by a women’s chorus. This lullaby rang with an uncanny familiarity in me. An adaptation of this lullaby and the rhythmic chant that follows it appears in each of the three main sections of Records. This piece is dedicated to the memory of James Rose. Records from a Vanishing City was commissioned by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Orpheus’s world premiere performance of the work at Carnegie Hall was supported in part by a Project Grant from New Music USA.

Piano Concerto in A minor, Opus 16 (1868)

Edvard Grieg was born in Bergen, Norway, on June 15, 1843, and died there on September 4, 1907. The firstperformance of the Piano Concerto in A minor took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, on April 3, 1869. In addition to the solo piano, the Concerto is scored fortwoflutes, twooboes, twoclarinets,two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, timpani, and strings.



Approximate performance time is thirty minutes.

Edvard Grieg’s beloved Piano Concerto was the product of a particularly happy period in the Norwegian composer’s life. In 1867, Grieg and his wife, Nina, were married. The following April, their daughter, Alexandra, was born. That summer, Edvard, Nina, and Alexandra Grieg traveled to Søllerød, located near Copenhagen. The Grieg family vacationed in a rented cottage. There, Edvard Grieg composed the A-minor Piano Concerto.

The premiere of the Concerto, which took place in Copenhagen on April 3, 1869, was generally well received by the Norwegian press. One critic viewed the work, which incorporated Norwegian folk idioms, as presenting “all Norway in its infinite variety and unity,” and compared the second movement to “a lonely mountain-girt tarn that lies dreaming of infinity.”

In early 1870 in Rome, Grieg met the great Hungarian pianist and composer, Franz Liszt. During one visit, Grieg presented the score of the A-minor Concerto to Liszt, who played

through the work, often shouting his approval. As Grieg related: “Finally, (Liszt) said in a strange, emotional way: ‘Keep on, I tell you. You have what is needed, and don’t let them frighten you.’” Liszt did suggest some changes to the score, finally published in 1872. Grieg was never totally satisfied with the Concerto, and continued to pen revisions until the time of his death. Despite the composer’s misgivings, the Grieg A-minor remains one of the most popular of piano concertos.

The Concerto is in three movements. The first (Allegro moderato) features one of concert music’s most famous and dramatic openings. The second movement (Adagio) opens with an extended introduction spotlighting the muted strings. This precedes the entrance of the soloist, whose presence dominates the remainder of this brief and affecting slow-tempo movement. The finale (Allegro moderato molto e marcato) begins with a short introduction that anticipates the soloist’s presentation of the main theme—a jaunty rhythmic passage based upon a Norwegian folk dance known as the halling. The flute initiates a lovely contrasting interlude, but the spirited halling motif soon returns. The closing pages present the orchestra’s majestic transformation of the interlude, accompanied by the soloist’s grand flourishes.

THE KNOXVILLE SYMPHONY LEAGUE

With the appreciation of the KSO Board of Directors, the Conductor’s Circle is open to individuals who make donations of $5,000 or more annually to the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. Members of the Circle are preeminent contributors who ensure the KSO’s tradition of artistic and educational excellence.

Conductor’s Circle members will be invited to attend an exclusive dinner in the spring featuring a special performance by members of the KSO. Members will also receive concierge drink service at intermission during Masterworks concerts, complimentary parking at all POPS series concerts, and invitations to receptions, rehearsals and special events.
