Eden hears this and grabs her diving mask and flippers.Co-pilot Noah Jeffries reacts.

NOAHSayer, what are you doing?

EDENPermission to get wet, sir!

Pilot Cord McKenna is steely authority.

CORDNegative Sayer. We cant pull eitherof you up. Sit tight, keep an eye out.

EDENSir, he may not have twenty minutes!

CORDNo! Sayer, thats an order!

They lock eyes. Edens mind is made up. She pulls downher mask and jumps out of the cabin.

CORD/NOAHSAYER!

3.EXT. WATER CONTINUOUS

Eden splashes in and swims through fiery debris to Tomczak,held afloat by his life jacket. She grabs him, sees thathes badly burned, unconscious.

EDENTommy! Can you hear me?!

He groans.

EDENIts me, Tommy! Ive got you! Ivegot you!

Eden looks around. The oilrig tender is burning out ofcontrol and breaking up. The ships crewmen float dead in

the water around them.

EDENYou stay alive, Brent! You hear me,stay alive!

She looks up at the Jayhawk and waves.

INT. JAYHAWK IN FLIGHT SAME

Cord and Noah look down at them.

NOAHHes alive, Cord. Hes alive.

OFF Cord...

Ill leave you with him now, but youknow Ill take care of him all night.

CHLOE(through tears)

I know. Thank you, Jen.

Jenny looks into Chloes eyes to give her strength. Chloeturns to Tomczak, covered in bandages, tubes sticking outof him. She sits on the edge of the bed and gentlycaresses the non-burned part of his face. Jenny exits.

INT. OUTSIDE ICU CONTINUOUS

Jenny runs into Cord, Noah and Eden going to see Tomczak.

JENNYLieutenant McKenna. Im sorry sir, butnows not a good time.

CORDBut the doctor said we could see him.

JENNYYes, I know. But his fianc is in withhim now. I think they should be alone.

Jenny exchanges a look with Noah. Eden also reacts,disappointed, but covers.

JENNYTheres an observation window.

The three crewmembers go to the window and watch as Chloeleans close, speaks quietly to Tomczak. Eden and Noah bothlook on with heavy meaning in their eyes.

INT. HOSPITAL CORRIDOR LATER

Cord, Noah and Eden walk together.

NOAHIm going to hit the head before I headout. See you two in the a.m.

CORDAll right.

6.Noah heads off. Eden and Cord look at each other.

INT. HOSPITAL ROOM MOMENTS LATER

Eden and Cord are alone.

EDENIm sorry Lieutenant, but I couldntjust do nothing.

CORDWhat you did was disobey a directorder, Sayer.

EDENLieutenant, even with a lifejacket he

wouldve drowned in seas that rough.

CORDYou mean like the men we were sent torescue?

Beat. She struggles to keep her emotions in check.

CORDYou saved Tommys life but you may alsohave bought yourself a court-martialand a ticket out of the Coast Guard.

INT. OUTSIDE ICU NIGHT

Through the observation window we see Chloe kiss Tomczaksforehead then say goodnight to Jenny, who gives her anotherhug. She exits the room and looks up at Noah, who iswaiting for her.

CHLOE(emotions welling up)

Noah?

NOAHHes gonna be alright Clo, I know hewill.

INT. HOSPITAL ROOM MOMENTS LATER

Chloe and Noah are alone. Shes still in dismay.

I never thought...I mean, a coma...Whatam I going to do now, Noah?

NOAHTry not to worry about that now, okay?Youve got to stay strong, for Tommy aswell as yourself. Understand?

She nods uncertainly. He glances at her ENGAGEMENT RING.

NOAHListen, Clo, I know you must reallycare for Tommy. I dont doubt that onebit. But getting engaged? Well, thatcaught a lot of people off guard.

CHLOEA lot of people Noah?

Jenny enters and stops cold, shocked to find them together.

EXT. SCENIC HIKING TRAIL - DAY

Kerri and Siobhan Keilar have been hiking for some time.

KERRIYou were right, Siobhan, this trail isincredible.

SIOBHANAlaska is heavenly if you enjoy theoutdoors.

KERRII do. Thanks for thinking of me. Iveonly been on Kodiak for a few weeks,but I really needed this.

They stop to take in a beautiful vista.

Sure, sweetheart. But can it waituntil I come home? Were meeting at10:30 and I have to pick Evelyn up.You know shes not allowed to drivewith her glaucoma.

CORDSure, Mom.

Claire kisses her angels Ashleigh and Maggie goodbye.

MEGAlright, girls. Get washed up and Momand Dad will take you to the skatingrink for an hour.

The girls delightedly do as theyre told. Cord begins toclear his dishes away.

MEGOh, Ill take care of those, babe. Dome a favor and go make sure the girlsdo a good job brushing their teeth.Ashleigh had another cavity at her lastdentists visit.

CORDSure. Okay.

She takes the dishes and watches him until hes left thekitchen. Then she quickly goes outside.

EXT. DRIVEWAY CONTINUOUS

Claire is backing out of the driveway in her minivan. Shestops when she sees Meg coming. Rolls down the window.

CLAIRE

Megan, dear, what is it?

MEGClaire, I need to talk with you.

CLAIRECertainly, Megan. But really, can itwait until I get home? I dont want tokeep Evelyn waiting.

Claire, we both know youre not goingto the movies with the ladies.

Claire reacts. Women just know these things.

CLAIREI thought that was a better explanationfor the girls and, of course, Cord.

MEGI appreciate that, Claire. But I thinkyoull agree what I have to talk to youabout is more important than a littleafternoon delight with Handyman Russ.

Claire doesnt appreciate Megs impudence.

CLAIREWhat is it, dear?

MEGCord is going to be reassigned toPuerto Rico.

(Claire reacts)Thats what he wants to talk to youabout. Hes been trying to find thebest way to break it to you.

CLAIREBut why?! He was just reassigned toKodiak six months ago!

MEG(looks back at house)

We can talk all about that later.Right now, I need you to think aboutthe best way to stop the transfer fromhappening and we have to do itwithout Cord knowing we got involved.

Eden is checking gauges. LUCCI enters.

LUCCISayer, what are you doing here?Thought youd be off today?

EDENNothing to do at home so I switchedwith Wallace for the day.

LUCCI

Have you been to see Tommy since youguys brought him in?

EDENNo.

LUCCIIt was a hell of a thing you did,Sayer, going in after him like that.If he pulls through

(clocks her reaction to if)Well, hell have you to thank when hecomes out of that coma.

Her body language says shes uncomfortable with the topic.

LUCCIWell, Ill see you around, Sayer.

He exits. She turns to the equipment, looks down at herclipboard. She closes her eyes to hold in her emotions.

INT. ICU DAY

Chloe, in scrubs, sits on the edge of Tomczaks bed. Hesstill in a coma but she talks to him softly anyway.

CHLOEI finally talked to your mom and dad.The Coast Guard is flying them in; theyshould be here tomorrow. They werevacationing in Florida...Thank goodness

Eden stands outside the room, looking through the window atChloe and Tomczak, not wanting to be seen.

INT. LAMAZE CLASS DAY

Noah and his seven-month pregnant wife Ashanti are amongexpectant mothers and their partners doing an exercise.

INSTRUCTORThats right. Deep, slow breaths.Become one with your partner. Feel herheartbeat. Good...

SAME SCENE LATER

The class has ended. Noah and Ashanti talk to theINSTRUCTOR as other parents-to-be mingle or exit.

ASHANTIIts hard to believe this is our lastclass. I just hope were ready.

INSTRUCTORYou two have done great. Youll bothdo just fine.

NOAHOh, its not me Im worried about. Imcool as the other side of the pillowunder pressure. But Ashanti here...

ASHANTIOh, Please!(to instructor)

Joe Cool here almost tossed his cookieswhen he saw the first ultrasound of ourbaby.

NOAHI had a bad hoagie for lunch that day.

INT. HOSPITAL CORRIDOR - LATER

Noah and Ashanti walk down the corridor.

ASHANTIBaby, I have to make a stop before weget on the road.

NOAHIll wait here.

Ashanti goes into the Ladies room. Noah sees Eden downthe corridor looking dismayed. He goes to her.

NOAHSayer.

EDEN(covering)

Oh hi, Lieutenant.

NOAHVisiting Tommy?

EDENUh...not yet. But I plan to.

NOAHYou alright, Sayer? You seem a littleout of sorts.

EDENNo, sir. Im fine.

NOAHYou know, its totally understandableif youre a bit...overwhelmed by whatshappened.

EDENIm fine, Lieutenant. Really.

I know. Look, Sayer, I know you andTomczak were are close. What Imean is, I know you two had feelingsfor one another. Its okay

EDEN(reacts)

Sir, Tomczak and I are just friends,nothing more. Anyone who says orthinks otherwise doesnt know what hestalking about.

NOAHOkay. Okay, Im sorry.

EDEN

Sir, if youll just excuse me please.

NOAHSure. Okay, Sayer.

Shes on her way down the corridor. He looks after her.

INT. LADIES ROOM SAME

Chloe enters and goes straight to a mirror to pull herselftogether. She wipes tears from her eyes, etc. We hear aTOILET FLUSH. Ashanti comes out of a stall. She stopsbefore Chloe sees her, then continues to a sink.

ASHANTIChloe are you alright?

Chloe becomes even more emotional when she sees Ashanti.

CHLOEAshanti! No, Im not! Im notalright!

For a moment, Ashanti is unsure what to do, but Chloestotal breakdown tugs at her heart. She takes her husbandsformer plaything in her arms and consoles her.

INT. HOSPITAL CORRIDOR LATER

Noah waits outside the Ladies Room. He glances at hiswatch, a bit nervous. Hes almost blown away when Ashantiand Chloe come out together, Ashanti comforting Chloe.

Uh...hey. Ashanti, Chloe. Iseverything alright?

Chloes pulling it together thanks to Ashanti.

CHLOE(to Ashanti)

Ill be fine. Ive got to get back tomy shift now. Thank you...forlistening.

ASHANTISure. Remember, its going to bealright. Youre going to be alright.

Chloe tries to smile. Then she goes off down the corridor.

Noah looks at her then at Ashanti, who stares at him.

ASHANTI(beat)

Lets go home now.

INT. SUBARU OUTBACK MOVING DAY

Noah drives.

ASHANTIOf course shes shook up. She meets aman, falls in love with him, getsengaged and, like that, hes blown upand left in a coma.

NOAHIts awful, I know.

ASHANTIAbout the only thing that could makethings worse would be if she were

pregnant.

She clocks Noahs reaction but doesnt let on.

NOAHIs she? Pregnant?

ASHANTINo. But shes still torn over what todo.

What to do? About what?

ASHANTIBrents parents will be here tomorrow.They want to take him back to Wisconsinas soon as the doctors say he can bemoved.

NOAHYeah. So?

ASHANTISo Chloe is torn over whether to goback with her fianc or stay here.

INT. SENIOR CENTER, BEDROOM SUNSET

Claire is sitting up in bed next to a reclining RussWheeler. Shes lost in thought.

RUSSPenny for your thoughts.

CLAIRESorry, what did you say dear?

RUSSWhat is it, Claire Bear? Youve beendistant all afternoon.

CLAIREIm sorry, Russ. Im thinking aboutCord.

RUSSWhat about him? Are he and Meg stillhaving problems?

CLAIREIts not that, dear. He may betransferred.

RUSS(sits up)

I see. Wasnt that always apossibility?

Yes, of course. But his CO wants toforce him out sooner than we planned.The funny thing is, Megan of allpeople, wants to stay.

RUSSBut I thought she hated it here, thatKodiak was one of the big problems intheir marriage.

CLAIREIts what I thought too. But shesasked me to help her find a way tochange his COs mind.

RUSS

And you can do that?

She looks at him.

CLAIREI can try.

RUSS(sensing more)

What is it, Claire?

CLAIREI guess I realized something today.

RUSSWhats that?

CLAIREMegan was right about me. As much as Idenied it, even to myself, I haventreally given her much of a chance. Oh,I put up a good front for Cord and thegirls. But inside, Ive resented her

for taking Cord away from the life weexpected him to have.

RUSSYou mean the OBrien girl?

CLAIRESiobhan. Yes. But today when sheasked for my help...Well, for the firsttime I felt like we were...together.

18.Russ gives her a supportive squeeze on the shoulder.Kisses her cheek and she responds by caressing his face.

RUSSWell, now that you two are together,theres no telling what you canaccomplish.

INT. RUSS AND JOYS ROOM LATER

Russ enters and takes off his sweater. His stroke-paralyzed wife Joy sits in a cozy rocker staring at JudgeJudy on television. Her NURSE is next to her on the sofa.

Russ comes over and kisses Joy on the cheek.

RUSSHows my girl doing?

Joys eyes register his presence.

NURSEShes been a dear. We had a goodafternoon.

The nurse stands and begins collecting her things to leave.

RUSSThanks for staying a little longertoday. Sometimes these handyman jobstake a bit longer than you expect.

NURSE(not born yesterday)

Mmmm-hmmm. Well, good night, Mr.Wheeler.

The nurse goes to the door, turns and looks at Joy. Sheraises her voice slightly.

NURSEGood night, Joy. Ill see youtomorrow.

Joy just stares at the TV. After the nurse exits

RUSSWell, love, how bout we hit the hay?

19.Russ flicks off the TV and carefully lifts Joy out of thechair, walks with her toward the bedroom.

INT. SIOBHANS HOME SUNSET

Siobhan and Kerri have tea in the living room.

SIOBHANYes. Not many people retire to KodiakIsland, but its the only place onEarth my folks would want to live.

KERRIYou spent your childhood here, didntyou?

SIOBHANI did. When Mom and Dad came back, Ileft Juneau and came home too. Iabsolutely adore it here.

KERRII adored my parents too, but unless Immistaken and I rarely am Id sayyour coming back had something to dowith a man.

Siobhan smiles.

SIOBHANYes, well, the things we do.

KERRIYes...Im curious, Siobhan. Yourgrandfather, father, an uncle and yourbrother were all Coasties. Howd youfall for a commercial fisherman?

SIOBHAN

Just one of those things, Iguess...Your husband also was aCoastie, wasnt he?

KERRIYes. His last command was as skipperof a Motor Life Boat.

SIOHBANI hope you dont mind my asking, buthow did he die?

Jack drove off a bridge and drowned.Its one of the rare times the onlycasualty was the drunk driver himself.

SIOBHANIm very sorry, Kerri.

KERRITime has helped...Time and my Katie. Idont know what I would do without her.

Beat.

SIOBHAN

You said its been over two years.Would you consider re-marrying?

Kerri reacts, amused by the thought.

KERRIEven if I were to come across a man Ithought was a possibility, between thejob and Katie but mostly the job Idoubt Id have the energy for a seriousrelationship.

She pours more tea for Siobhan and freshens her own cup.

KERRIWhat about you? Youre young, yourebeautiful. I know it hasnt been longsince your husband passed, but sinceyou brought it up.

SIOBHANId like to start a family. I do lovechildren so.

KERRI(smiles)

Then I know one day youll have one.

SIOBHANThank you. I hope so. You know, Ifeel so close to you, Kerri. Its likeyoure the sister I never had.

Maggie twirls on the ice to cap a practice routine withflair. Even at five years old, its clear she has talent.Her coach Nadia Ivanova claps her approval.

NADIAVery well done, Maggie!

She waves Maggie over to rink side and squeezes her cheeks.Cord and Meg come from the stands to meet them. Maggiegets a hug from her mother.

MEGThat was great, sweetheart!

MAGGIEThanks, Mommy!

CORDWay to go, Magpie.

NADIAShe is my best student, without adoubt. I feel she is ready.

MEGReady? For what?

NADIAWhy, the next level of course.

Cord and Meg just look at her, puzzled.

NADIAMegan, Lieutenant, the young women you

see in the Olympics, in the WorldFigure Skating Championships, theybegin preparation when they are four,five, six years old. Our Maggie isready to begin her preparation.

Maggie sits between Meg and Cord, who is driving.

MAGGIECould I really be in the Olympics,Mommy?

MEGSure, sweetheart. If you work veryhard for a very long time. I believeyou can, and so does Miss Ivanova.

Meg glances at Cord, whose eyes are on the road but hismind is obviously elsewhere.

MAGGIE

Would you like it if I were in theOlympics, Daddy?

CORDSure I would, Magpie. Id love it.

Cord exchanges a look with Meg.

INT. EDENS APARTMENT DAY

Eden is restless in her apartment. She tries to read amagazine on the sofa, logs on to Facebook, boils water fortea, stares out the window at the frozen landscape...

EXT. ROAD A SHORT TIME LATER

Edens jogging down the road. She stops and looks furtherahead. Reverse and we see that shes looking at thehospital. Beat. Her cell phone RINGS. She answers.

EDEN

Hello?

TONI (V.O.)Hi.

EDENOh, hi.

TONI (V.O.)Baby, are you alright? You sound outof breath.

Im fine. You just caught me out for arun.

Beat.

TONI (V.O.)(doubtful)

Really?

EDENWhat do you mean, Really?

TONI (V.O.)Nothing.

EDEN

(piqued)No, what do you mean? Am I lying inbed with someone else? Is that whatyou think?

TONI (V.O.)No, baby, of course not! Eden, yourescaring me. Whats wrong?

EDENNothing. Nothings wrong. Look, Imsorry. Im just...its just been atough few days on the job.

TONI (V.O.)Im sorry, Eden. Should I call yousome other time?

EDENNo...Im glad you called.

She turns away from the hospital and walks away as shetalks on the phone.

INT. MCKENNA HOME NIGHT

While Cord is upstairs helping Ashleigh and Maggie put toysand stuffed animals away in their room, we find Meg andClaire conspiring in the kitchen as they put away dishes.

But weve got to do something, Claire.We cant just sit here and wait to bebooted out.

CLAIREIts not that simple, Megan. A basecommander is like the captain of aship. His, or in this case, her, wordis like the Ten Commandments.

MEGBut she isnt God. Cord has rights.Even in the military peoples rightsoutweigh a commanders authority, dontthey?

CLAIRECord is a career Coast Guard officer.He values his career. We value hiscareer.

Meg understands who she means by We.

CLAIREListen, I can talk to a few of Macsfriends, and mine, Coasties who stillcarry some weight here and inWashington.

CLAIREIts possible. But it could alsobackfire and hurt Cords career. Itwill also be hard to keep anything wedo a secret from Cord.

(alarmed)We have to keep this from him! If hethought either of us was going behindhis back hed blow a gasket.

CLAIREAnd knowing that you still want to try?

Cord enters the kitchen. Meg and Claire turn to him,covering.

MEG/CLAIRENo!

INT. HOSPITAL ROOM - NIGHT

Tomczak is in bed, hooked to monitors, still in a coma.The door opens slowly and Eden comes in quietly. Shestands over him, looks down at his bandaged, burned faceand arms. A tear rolls down her face and is quickly wipedaway. She ever so tenderly touches his face.

EDEN(choking back emotion)

Oh, Tommy...

INT. JEFFRIES HOME, NURSERY NIGHT

Noah is finishing up a wallpapering job, under Ashantishawk-like supervision.

ASHANTIYoure sure thats smoothed out all theway.

NOAHIts smooth, baby.

ASHANTIThats what you said about the cornerover there.

NOAHIts smooth.

27.He smiles at her and comes down the ladder. Kisses her.

ASHANTI(admiring)

Its perfect. Shes going to love it.

NOAHHed love it more if we threw in adinosaur or sports car here or there.

Ashanti playfully jabs him. He puts his arm around her andpulls her close. Beat.

NOAHWhat do you think of Alyssa?

ASHANTI

I like Genevieve better.

NOAH(considering)

INT. JEFFRIES HOME, BEDROOM - LATER

Lying on the bed, Noah admires Ashanti as she rubs cocobutter on her belly. The baby moves inside her.

ASHANTISlow down, Sally. Daddys not finishedwith your room yet.

NOAHBaby Girl can hardly wait to get out.Just like her mom, shes all over it.

He touches her belly and their hands meet. Beat.

ASHANTI

Noah, I need to know that this baby andme are the most important things in theworld to you.

NOAHYes, baby, you know that.

ASHANTI(looks in his eyes)

No, I dont know that.

She kisses him sweetly, puts aside the coco butter and laydown on her side to go to sleep. He flips the lamp switchand lay down, caresses her belly. She puts her hand on his.

INT. HOSPITAL ROOM - DAWN

CLOSE ON Tomczaks face. His eyes flutter open. He moans.PULL BACK to reveal Eden lying next to him in bed. She

feels him move and looks up.

EDENTommy?

He looks down at her. She lifts up to face him.

TOMCZAK(weak, recognizing)

Eden...

EDENThe tender exploded.

She shushes him gently with her fingertips.

EDENYoure in the hospital but youre going

to be fine. Okay?

EDEN(impishly)

Youre a lucky guy, you know.

TOMCZAKI am?

EDENYoure the first man to ever get me inbed.

A smile slowly, painfully, comes to his lips.

TOMCZAKI must be okay. Think Im getting ahard on.

INT. HOSPITAL CORRIDOR - DAY

Chloe gets off the elevator and moves down the corridorwith purpose. She gets to Tomczaks room, goes inside...

INT. HOSPITAL ROOM CONTINUOUS

And stops cold at the sight of Eden sitting on the bedsmiling and talking to Tomczak as she feeds him applesauce.Eden looks over at her.

Eden looks at Tomczak and steps away from the bed to makeway for Chloe, who steps in and caresses Tomczaks face.

EDENYeah, theyre supposed to have the bestburn rehab specialists there.

As the hydraulic lift rises with Tomczak, his parents andChloe walk up the stairway to the jet door.
