KET Kodiak Island is located in the north

Pacific ocean 250 miles southwest of Anchorage It is the second largest island in the US home to approximately 13345 residents the largest US Coast Guard base 17 million acre National Wildlife Refuge and one of the top 5 fishing ports in the United States Kodiak receives approximately 67 inches of rain annually

The farthest one can drive from the City of Kodiak is approximately 50 miles putting nearly every home within commuting distance

For the past several years the Kodiak housing market came be most characterized as lsquoStablersquo as Kodiak has been fairly immune to the boom and bust cycles as experienced in many parts of the US Being in a semi isolated location combined with a stable government amp fishing economy has allowed Kodiak to enjoy modest growth without major fluctuations

WHO ARE THE ALUTIIQ PEOPLEThe Alutiiq are Kodiakrsquos first settlers an Alaska Native people closely related to the Yuprsquoik of southwestern Alaska Today there are about 1800 Alutiiq people in the Kodiak region The live in the City of Kodiak and six rural villagesmdashAkhiok Karluk Larsen Bay Old Harbor Ouzinkie and Port Lions

HOW LONG HAVE ALUTIIQ PEOPLE LIVED ON KODIAKAlutiiq ancestors came to Kodiak more than 7500 years ago Archaeologists believe they paddled to the island from the Alaska Peninsula and that the modern Native community is descended from these first residents When Russian traders arrived in 1764 there were about 10000 Alutiiq people living in the region

WHAT IS KODIAKrsquoS TRADITIONAL LANGUAGEKodiakrsquos Native language is called Alutiiq or Sugcestun This language was heavily suppressed in the twentieth century and there are just a few

fluent speaker left Today Alutiiq elders are teaching the language to younger generations In addition to English many Alutiiq people speak some Russian the language of the Russian Orthodox Church

WHAT RESOURCES DO ALUTIIQ PEOPLE HARVESTThe Alutiiq are a maritime people who have always made their living from the sea Alutiiq ancestors built sturdy boats from driftwood and animal skins and used them to harvest sea mammals fish and bird to feed their families Most Alutiiq families continue to harvest wild foods both for the dinner table and the commercial fishing industry

WHAT ARE THE ALUTIIQ ARTSThe arts are a central part of Alutiiq culture and one of the important ways that Native people express their identities Kodiak is home to many talented Alutiiq artists who practice beading carving ceramics drawing boat building painting photography skin sewing and weaving Kodiak also has active Native dance groups who perform with songs instruments and choreography
