A BRIEF OVERVIEW
WELCOME TO PRINTMAKING
PRINTMAKING
• Process of art making through print• Unique processes with extremely unique
results, each print is an individual• Possibilities of making multiples, editions,
reworking an image, and endless artistic exploration
• Hands on processes that gets you really dirty
• A mixture of patience and serenity vs. excitement and movement
PRINTMAKING
• Generally speaking, there are four main processes in the Tyler print shop– Relief– Intaglio– Planographic (lithography)– Stencil (screen printing)• There a million different ways to work
within these processes and a million different results
RELIEF
• Ink is applied to the surface of a cut or carved matrix, such as wood or linoleum
• Inked matrix is laid on top of paper and rolled through press
• Carved image is transferred to paper• Examples are woodcut/woodblock
and linocut

INTAGLIO
• Ink is applied below the surface of a matrix in crevasse or grooves
• Excess ink wiped away, wet paper is laid on top and rolled through press
• Grooved image is transferred to paper
• Exampled are etchings and engravings

• Process of printing through a rejection of ink from water and attraction of ink from grease
• On a stone or metal plate

SCREEN PRINTING
• Stencil is created on a mesh screen• Ink is placed on screen and pulled
through stencil onto paper• Stencil images is transfered
