KOHLER’S THEORY
![Page 2: Kohler’s theory.complete](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070302/54723e0cb4af9f9d0a8b4e66/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
Kohler experimented with a chimpanzee
placed in a cage. The animal tried to reach
a banana placed outside the cage with his own hands but he
could not.

There were two sticks in the cage
and the animal used one to reach the
banana but he failed.

Then the chimpanzee joined the two sticks end to end and the animal was able to draw the banana
closer to him.

Another example …
![Page 8: Kohler’s theory.complete](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070302/54723e0cb4af9f9d0a8b4e66/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
A boy wants to get a green mango hanging
from a branch of a mango tree.
![Page 9: Kohler’s theory.complete](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070302/54723e0cb4af9f9d0a8b4e66/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
![Page 10: Kohler’s theory.complete](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070302/54723e0cb4af9f9d0a8b4e66/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
He cannot reach the mango with his own
hands even if he climbs the tree
because the fruit is at the far end of a
branch.
![Page 11: Kohler’s theory.complete](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070302/54723e0cb4af9f9d0a8b4e66/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
If he climbs and tries to reach the
mango, the branch may break and he falls the ground.
![Page 12: Kohler’s theory.complete](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070302/54723e0cb4af9f9d0a8b4e66/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)

So he finds a stick to get the mango but no
to avail.
![Page 14: Kohler’s theory.complete](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070302/54723e0cb4af9f9d0a8b4e66/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
![Page 15: Kohler’s theory.complete](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070302/54723e0cb4af9f9d0a8b4e66/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
He find another stick but still he cannot get the mango with the
second stick alone.
![Page 16: Kohler’s theory.complete](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070302/54723e0cb4af9f9d0a8b4e66/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
He joins the two sticks, thus making a longer one, and
places a hook at one end.

He finally gets the mango.
