Oskar KOKOSCHKA (1886-1980), born in Pochlarn, Austria, was an important
writer ofavant-garde plays and a set designer, but is best remembered as one ofthe
chief twentieth-century artists of the German-speaking countries. Sometimes
considered to be the greatest draftsman among them, he produced a huge numberofdrawings in many media, largely as studies for paintings and illustrations. After
long years in Vienna, his colorful career, checkered by causes celebres and political
exile, led him to reside in Dresden, Prague, London (he was naturalized as a
British subject in 1947) and Villeneuve, Switzerland. Among his varied artistic
themes, human subject matter predominates: figure painting and a very penetrat-
ing psychoanalytical portraiture. In fact, even his famous cityscapes have been
called "city portraits." The present volume, including 47 great drawings, concen-
trates entirely on figure studies and portraits.
Ranging in date from the Klimt- and Schiele-like studies of 1906 to the
magnificently free and untrammeled style of1969, these drawings include a study
for the famous lithograph cycle Die trdutnenden Knaben (The Dreaming Boys) and a
sketch for an Odyssey illustration. The selection features several highly instructive
long sequences in which Kokoschka made numerous drawings of single sitters in
rapid succession, tirelessly striving to capture the essence of their personalities. In
some of his late works the artist achieves especially magical effects of luminosity
by a skillful mixture of media, but in all periods his line is a faithful servant of his
highly individual vision.
A few ofthe illustrations have been placed somewhat out ofchronological order
to achieve a more desirable visual sequence.

47 Works
Oskar Kokoschka
A leading figure in Austro-German Expressionism, Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980)
was strongly influenced by the Vienna Secession, in particular the work of Klimt.
He went on to develop his own style, notable for its originality, power and acute
psychological penetration.
This volume contains a rich selection of 47 of Kokoschka's finest drawings,
concentrating entirely on figure studies and portraits. Ranging in date from the
Klimt- and Schiele-like studies of 1906 to the magnificently free and untrammeledstyle of 1969, the drawings include a study for the famous lithograph cycle Dietrdumenden Knaben (The Dreaming Boys) and a sketch for an Odyssey illustration.
Also included are several highly instructive long sequences in which Kokoschkamade numerous drawings of single sitters in rapid succession, tirelessly striving to
capture the essence of their personalities.
Evident in all these works are the nervous intensity, virtuosic flowing line andsensitivity to his subject that characterize the artist's finest work. Now admirers of
Kokoschka and any lover of modern art or Expressionism can enjoy this
inexpensive treasury of superb drawings by one of the century's greatest masters.
