Some Thoughts on the Sidra By Rabbi Nisan Andrews
Thought on the Parsha:In this week’s parsha, Ekev, we find the second section of the Kriat Shma (Devarim 11:13-21). Interestingly, and perhaps fittingly, this follows last week’s reading, the source of the first paragraph. Commentators spend time comparing and contrasting these portions in attempts to suss out deeper insight and life lessons. I’d like to share one such explanation I found in the writings of Rabbi Issac Bernstein ZaTza”l.
The Ohr Sameiach (Rabbi Meir Simcha of Dvinsk) in his commentary on the Torah, the Meshach Chachma, quotes a Midrash (Sifrei) pointing out that there is a quantitative difference between these two sections. The first paragraph contains not only our duty to keep the mitzvot (commandments) but our obligation to study Torah as well. Meanwhile, the second section only speaks to our observance of the mitzvot.
Based on this, Rabbi Meir Simcha writes, only in the second paragraph do we find the admonition, “Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and you turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them (11:16)”. He explains since the first paragraph speaks of a union of study and Torah observance, the likelihood of being led away from God is minimal. However, since the second portion refers to fulfilling mitzvot without its accompanied learning, the danger of temptation is more significant. Hense, a precautionary statement becomes required.
A comment from Rabbi Chaim Velozhiner can amplify this idea. He points out that in the Shmona Esrei (the Amida) we say “Bring us back, our Father, to Your Torah. Draw us near, our King, to Your service”.
The first part of this sentence refers to the study of Torah in addition to our fulfilment of the mitzvot. This is when our relationship with Hashem is at its highest and, as such, we refer to him as our father. The latter verse indicates performance without the learning of Torah and, therefore, we relate to God as king. We are not His children, but, His subjects, due to our more distant relationship.
Whilst keeping Halacha and observing the mitzvot is laudable, one should aspire to the combination of study and practice. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that Kinloss provides many opportunities for engaged learning through fantastic classes and events. With such accessibility, it considerably diminishes the burden as we strive for those higher goals.

THIS WEEK’S HAFTORAH BY RABBI ANDREWS The Haftorah this week begins with the verse from the 49th chapter of Yishayahu (Isaiah), “God has forsaken me, my Sovereign has forgotten me” (verse14). This a dubious beginning to the second of the Shivah D’Nichemta (seven haftorot of consolation) that follow Tisha B’Av. Despite this first verse, the rest of the Haftorah answers this bitter declaration with positive, hopeful assurances of the final redemption.
Initially, Yishayahu highlights the repopulation of Jerusalem as an essential element of her rejuvenation. Tzion (Zion) thinks of herself as abandoned, which the Navi (prophet) firmly argues by assuring us that our relationship to God is greater than a mother’s to her child or nursing infant, Tzion is inscribed on God’s “palms”. Hashem could never forget the Bnei Yisroel.
Yishayahu continues to employ this metaphor in describing how the nations of the world will return the exiles to Eretz Yisroel (Land of Israel): “Thus says the Eternal God…I raise My ensign to the peoples: They shall cradle your sons in their arms, and carry your daughters on their shoulders” (49:22). With this expansive return to Jerusalem, the desolate city will blossom and, to the astonishment of the personified city itself, people complain of a lack of room to live.
When the verses refer to God not forgetting us, various Midrashim understand Hashem as “remembering” events of Yitziat Mitzrayim. The Giving of the Torah at Sinai and the construction of the Mishkan (Tabernacle), amongst others, are what the Midrash looks back towards as the origin of God’s permanent link with us. These were all signs of our having been chosen by God to be His representatives in the world, a union that will never be broken or forgotten.
If you find yourself at Kinloss over the course of the day, please stop by the office to say hello! I can usually be found there during the regular office hours (except Thursday)
