Dear Fellow Congregants:

The Tree of Life staff/board is excited and ready for the High Holy Days. I look

forward to meeting, and seeing, many of you during the course of our High Holy

Day services. This is the perfect opportunity to reconnect to our traditions by

looking forward to a New Year of prosperity and blessing while seeking forgiveness

(atonement) and repentance. 5778 will be a wonderful year!

I would like to thank Abe Wandersman (and his TOL Coffee House Volunteers) for

spearheading a 4 part concert series to be held in the Tree of Life Social Hall:

November 4, 2017 Ellis Paul

January 6, 2018 Jack Williams

March 17, 2018 Harpeth Rising

April 21, 2018 Vance Gilbert

We will have the opportunity to experience great folk music by nationally recognized and talented artists. Our

congregation will benefit from a portion of ticket sales and event concession sales (provided by Groucho's Deli).

Additionally, I would like to thank members who contributed to the repair of our Rain Garden (detention pond). It

is now in good working condition. And a big thank you to all the members who have come forward with fantastic

fundraising ideas for this upcoming year. It is great to see so many congregants getting involved with projects at

TOL.

I hope to see you all during the High Holidays.

Very Kindly,

Bruce Miller

FROM THE RABBI

Dear Friends,

I can’t believe that the High Holy Days are already upon us, but here they are and I am so

excited for everything happening at Tree of Life this month. As the leaves begin to turn,

and we turn over new leaves entering into the New Year, we all need to take a moment to

appreciate all that we accomplished in 5777.

What a difference a year can make! While last year at this time I was still figuring out the difference between North Carolina

and South Carolina barbeque, this year I will enter into 5778 with far greater clarity in terms of our community’s character and

vision for the year ahead. While I am not one for spoilers, I will share that my sermons this year will all be connected to our

congregational theme for the New Year: Being a Kehillah Kedosha (a holy community). This theme will permeate all we do as

a community throughout this year: in our religious school, social justice initiatives, services, etc. My four-part sermon to be

delivered on RH Evening, RH Morning, YK Evening (Kol Nidre), and YK Morning, will contextualize our theme and provide ideas

and concrete steps we can take to embody holiness individually and as a community.

While we cannot change when the holidays will fall throughout the year, we can change how we choose to engage with them.

The High Holy Days come around for a few days each year and I hope that this year, when your children ask if they can go to

school or do something else during the High Holy Days, that parents will lovingly guide their children towards services at TOL.

The decision to attend services provides a far more profound effect on identity and education than missing a day of school,

missing a game, or hanging out at home. This New Year, let us resolve to make the right choice for ourselves and our children.

There is a great deal to look forward to in September in addition to our High Holy Days. Below are some upcoming events that

occur throughout the High Holy Day season that tend to get lost in the shuffle:

From the Rabbi

On August 26th we celebrated the Bar

Mitzvah of Daniel Sobel who led a

beautiful Shabbat Morning Service

and surely inspired his peers to keep

studying hard to earn their place on

the bimah. Mazal tov to the Sobel and

Hornauer clans!

From the Education Director

On Sunday, August 27th, the religious school staff met for the first time

for professional development and preparation for the start of the new

school year. We have an incredible teaching team in place – true

mensches with infectious passions for education, Judaism, community,

and sharing it all with the next generation. The only thing missing now is

our students – and we can’t wait for their return!

I’m delighted to present to you our classes for 5778:

It’s not too late to register. Fill out the online forms today at http://www.tolsc.org/enrollment !

Help For Houston

HOUSTON NEEDS OUR HELP!!

A plea from our fellow congregations in Houston has been made for

GIFT CARDS

so that the rabbis there can assist the community immediately in the wake

of Hurricane Harvey.

Please consider a donation through our Scrip program to help both the

Houston flood victims and TOL at the same time.

Cards to the following businesses are requested:

Target (2.5% back to TOL)

Lowe's (4%)

HEB (2%)

Home Depot (4%)

CVS (6%)

Rite Aid (4%)

Contact Amy Scully to place an order.

Any cards collected will be sent to Rabbis David Lyon and Josh Herman

(classmate of Rabbis Eric and Carolan) of Congregation Beth-Israel so that

they can distribute to the community. Their congregation has suffered a

great deal of damage, including a flooded sanctuary (don't worry - the

Torahs are safe), but will need our help and support as they get back on

their feet.

You can also make a donation through the Houston Jewish Federation.
