In pursuance of its objective

of promoting Indian culture throughoutreach programmes, the BharatiyaVidya Bhavan recently hosted acultural festival in Kolkata at theBhasha Bhavan auditorium, NationalLibrary. It was coordinated byBhavan’s Bengaluru Kendra underthe ‘Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan- InfosysFoundation Cultural OutreachProgramme’ jointly with theNational Library, Kolkata, andheld on March 6.

This was a flagship event of theBhavan to fulfill its mission to promoteyoung talent in Indian music and dance.

Sri Suresh briefed theaudience on the objectives of thecultural outreach programme,which had already opened itschapter in Bengaluru in February.Bhavan was at the forefront ofnurturing Indian culture for the

last 76 years, both in India andabroad. Infosys Foundation waslending the much-needed helpinghand through its patronage.Recalling the association ofJustice Chellur in Bhavan’sactivities, he appealed to thoseinterested to join hands inpromoting the country’s richcultural heritage.

(grandfather) and Ustad BaleKhan (father), who wereinstrumental in popularizing sitarin South India.

The next day—March 7—featured Purundara Namana, adance feature choreographed anddirected by Dr. Lalita Srinivasan,an eminent Bharatanatyam dancer.Held under the auspices of theSmt. C Rangamma and SriC. Beemappa Chetty MemorialEndowment programme, it wasa visual delight, featuring thecompositions of Purandaradasa.Suladi Prabandha, and a solo,

‘Kele Gopi Ninna....’ inragamalika, by Kusuma RanjitaViven recital. The artistes,Ms. Manasa Rao, Ms. Sri Vidya,Ms. Kusuma Ranjita Viven andSri. Ajay Viswanath werefelicitated. Ms. Ranjita Viven isthe daughter of Justice Chellur.

Karnaa, anaccomplished dancer inKathak, Odissi, Bharatanatyamand Manipuri, was a disciple ofNrityacharya Narayan Prasad,and also learnt from Guru Hiralal,Pandit Birju Maharaj, and GuruKelucharan Mohapatra. Sheguides the Sangeet and NrityaShikshan Bharati, a division ofBharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kolkata.Smt. Karnaa said dance for her isan ‘Ananta yatra’, a journey fromone stage to another in life.

Smt. Sutapa Talukdarrecalled her five decades as adancer and a teacher, and herlearning under KelucharanMohapatra. She said it wasdevotion, dedication anddiscipline that had made herwhat she was.

Nupura School ofBharathanatyam has built anenviable reputation in Karnataka,under the guidance of GuruLalitha Srinivasan a dancer,choreographer and researchscholar. Lalitha, initially a student ofGuru Keshavamurthy, laterspecialised in abhinaya underSmt. Dr.K.Venkatalakshammaand Smt. Jejamma. Her masteryover abhinaya is a treat to watch.

Sutapa Talukdar haspopularized Odissi at thenational level. She set up herdance school, Gurukul, in1987, where stringent practiceis the hallmark. She entered theworld of dance at the age of six,learning three diverse formssimultaneously – Manipuri,Kathakali and Mohiniattam.She first learnt Odissi fromGuru Muralidhar Majhi.

Rani Karnaa was born in1939, into a Sindhi family inHyderabad, in present- day

Pakistan. Her early teacherswere Nrityacharya NarayanPrasad and Sundar Prasad.She mastered the Jaipur gharanaunder Guru Hiralal and theLucknow gharana under PanditBirju Maharaj. She later learntunder Kelucharan Mahapatra,also trained under variousother gurus such as AmubiSingh, Narendra Kumar andLalita Shastri. He has researchedon the aesthetics of Kathak.

landmark day for the Bhavan’sBengaluru Kendra, as it usheredin a new and ambitious projectlaunched specifically to reach outto art lovers spread across theCity—the BVB-InfosysFoundation Outreach Culturalprogramme got off to anauspicious start with areverberating classical musicconcert, “Swara Laya Madhuri”,comprising an array ofinstruments. This outreachprogramme series has beenplanned in association with‘Ananya’ trust.

The programme wasinaugurated by none other thanthe king of creative percussionendeavours, Sri. AnoorAnanthakrishna Sharma.Smt. Vimala Rangachar, Presidentof the prestigious MES chain of

institutions, shared the dais withSharma. It came as no surprisewhen she announced that hereducational institutions wouldwhole-heartedly support theoutreach programmes, asSmt. Rangachar has foundedand built several cultural andart institutions in Karnataka,all of which continue to beflagship organizations in upholdingthe fundamental spirit and formof the State’s arts and crafts.

Jatayu Moksha is one

of the most touching episodes ofthe Ramayana which lends itselfwell to dramatization on stage.Sometimes, almost the entire epicis encapsulated into the episode,to bring out the story of Rama incontextual form, while focussingon the nobility and sacrifice ofJatayu.

The Rashtrakavi Govinda PaiSamshodhana Kendra, Udupi, a50-year-old oriental researchcentre known for its vast and rarecollections on the history andculture of the region, has an activecultural wing— its YakshaganaKendra has not only preserved

Beginning with the exile ofRama, the performance traversedthrough the Shurpanakha,Maricha, and Sitaapaharanaepisodes, leading up to the valiantfight of Jatayu, to save Sita fromRavana. Granting of salvation toJatayu, by Rama and Lakshmana,ended the Yakshagana recital,whose main vocalist SathishKedilaya added to the dramaticcontent. Devadas Rao Koodly(maddale) and KrishnamoorthyBhat (chande) were the otheraccompanists.
