Komen Inspires Action on World Cancer Day

World Cancer Day held annually on February 4 brings together people around theglobe united for a common goal to save millions of lives each year from cancer byraising awareness and education about the disease and press governments andindividuals across the world to take action You can read about how four individualsfrom different parts of the world - Janeth H (Mexico) Lori W MD (United States)Paula D (Brazil) and Valerie M PhD (France) - have been impacted by breastcancer and how they are taking action to fight it

Advancing Research Focused onInflammatory Breast Cancer

Susan G Komen the Milburn Foundation and the Inflammatory Breast CancerResearch Foundation announced they are working together for the third time toraise funds that support research focused on inflammatory breast cancer(IBC) Through March 31 the Milburn Foundation and the IBC Research Foundationwill match all donations to Komen up to $50000 to help meet our fundraising goal of$250000 for research aimed at finding new ways of detecting and treating IBC

Upcoming Research Funding Opportunities

Komen will continue its research investment to achieve our Bold Goal ndash to reducethe current number of breast cancer deaths by 50 in the US by 2026 The newRequest for Applications (RFAs) will be posted in late Spring on our FundingOpportunities page

Komen Advocacy SummitWere excited to meet on the Hill with

lawmakers at this years KomenAdvocacy Summit which will be held onMarch 21-23 Representatives from theAffiliates Advocates in Science (AIS)Komen Scholars and Komen staff willcome together to ensure that the fightagainst breast cancer remains a priorityamong policymakers in DC

We are also excited to pilot the SpeakTruth to Power Advocating to AchieveHealth Equity training on March 20-23in Washington DC This pilot trainingwill bolster the capacity of a cohort of50 local leaders representing the 10targeted metropolitan areas for ourAfrican-American Health EquityInitiative to sustain local health systemschange through public policy

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a breast cancer subtype that has shownlimited response to therapies that target the immune system (immunotherapies) In arecent Cancer Cell publication an investigative team that includes former KomenScholar Mien-Chie Hung PhD and Komen-funded grantee Seung-Oe LimPhDshows that TNBC response to immunotherapies can be improved by targetingprotein glycosylation

In a Journal of Clinical Oncology publication Komen-funded researchers DanielStover MD and Heather Parsons MD and their study team showed that bits oftumor DNA found in the blood called cell-free tumor DNA could identify whichTNBCs are more aggressive This could better inform treatment decisions forpatients Drs Stover and Parsons explain their work in a video interview

Komen Scholars Lisa Carey MD and Chuck Perou PhD were co-authors ontwo recent publications both of which used samples from the Komen-fundedUniversity of North Carolina (UNC) Tumor Donation Program Their paperpublished in Nature suggests that the amino acid asparagine may play a role inTNBC metastasis In their Journal of Clinical Investigator paper they identified newgenetic drivers of metastatic breast cancer

In a Cancer Cell publication MylesBrown MD a member of theKomens Scientific Advisory Board andhis team at the Dana-Farber CancerInstitute have found new genemutations that cause estrogenreceptor-positive (ER+) breast cancersto become resistant to standardtherapies and metastasize Identifyingthese targets could lead to newtherapies for those facing ER+metastatic breast cancer

Many people with breast cancerunfortunately will become resistant toHER2-targeted therapies But recentpublished work from KomenScholar Joe Gray PhD working withDr James Korkola and colleaguesbrings exciting new hope in this area Intheir Cell Systems publication theyshow that microenvironment-mediatedresistance to lapatinib and neratinibtreatment may be reversed by twocurrent FDA-approved drugs (crizotinibfor non-small cell lung cancer andpertuzumab for HER2-positive breastcancer) Learn more about this workand its potential impact on patients
