As you may have already noticed, this is a special issue of our Silva Rerum magazine. Not only because it

is the last issue for this year, but also because – as you can see – it’s completely written in English!

3

Hello.

Graphic editor of SILVA RERUM,

Paulina Budny

I wish you to have fun – both reading… and on your holidays!

Our school year is coming to an end very soon – some of us will stay at this school for the

next year, some of us will be already moving on in their lives. Despite the differences,

there is one thing that I am pretty sure about – everyone can’t wait for the summer

holidays to come. All of us long for some rest, laziness or adventures – visiting another

countries, going to the countryside, seaside or mountains, being able to feel a fresh scent

of flowers or sea breeze. All of us are tired of spending our days in school desks, all of us

long for some sweet freedom.

Luckily, our redactors know that your minds are focused on the upcoming vacation right now, so this special issue

is holiday themed – it revolves around our trip to England, which had its place not too long ago.

What can you expect to see in this special issue? Lots of things, things you may have never known about.

Were you interested how British teenagers spend their time in school or how their lessons look like? Have

you ever wondered what languages they learn or which classes they take?

I am pretty sure you’ve heard about the famous Oxford university as well, but there is a lot more to Oxford than

just a school – and to learn what makes this town so special, just check the article written by students who went on

the trip!

Maybe you aren’t interested in schools though – that is perfectly fine, you still have something nice to read

here. Do you have an idol, do you like famous people? Yes or not – you should read about the amazing

Madame Tussauds museum, famous of having a lot of extremely accurate wax figures of well known people.

On top of that, this issue also contains a diary detailing the whole trip, as well as students’ opinions and thoughts

about it. There is also a short article about this year’s hottest trends in fashion. And to show you that you don’t

have to go far to learn English – a review of an English play in the IMKA theatre situated in Warsaw!

TIDEWAY SCHOOL On the fifth day of our trip to England we visited an English school. It was called The Tideway

School and it was located in the town of Newhaven.

At first, we got stickers with the "visitor" caption. Then we were treated by teachers with

cookies and tea or coffee. They were very yummy. After that we went to the assembly hall to

see a short presentation about the school. Next, we were divided into small groups of four

Polish students. We were introduced by the head teacher to two students of the Year 10.

They led a tour around the school. English school is different than ours. They don't have

lessons like religious education and they don't need to learn Russian or German as a second

language. They learn Spanish and French instead. We learn three languages, they learn only

two.

It's not the end of differences between our schools. They have cooking lessons, design lessons

and drama lessons. English students are very lucky, because at music lessons they learn how

to play the keyboard, the guitar or the drums. Except that, they can go out of school during

breaks and lessons always end at 2.45 p.m.

When you are outside of the building, the view is beautiful. You can see the sea and the port,

seagulls are flying above your head. After the tour, we had a technology classes with the head

teacher. We logged on Tideway School's website. It's something like Facebook, but only

Tideway students and teachers are allowed to have accounts there. We got the usernames

and passwords, so we are now able to get in touch with them.

I would really love to stay there and study in this school, but, unfortunately, we had to go. I

enjoyed this visit a lot ! Drama classroom

OUR TRIP TO OXFORD

On the fifth day of our tour to the UK, we went to Oxford. It is a city located in southern England on the

River Thames in Oxfordshire and has 151 000 inhabitants. This city is known primarily for the world's

oldest university and one of the largest libraries in the world. Oxford is so popular among tourists

due to its beautiful architecture and university climate. During the Battle of Britain, Oxford wasn’t

attacked by the troops of the Third Reich, because Adolf Hitler wanted to make this city new capital

city.

In Oxfordshire there are many nature reserves, and in

Oxford there are 30 acres of parks. What is more, you can

find there the oldest botanical garden in England (one of

the oldest in the world), belonging to the University of

Oxford Botanic Garden. It was founded in 1621. In

Oxford very popular sport is rowing, both among

students and citizens. There are regattas each year on the

Thames River - Oxford City Regatta. Another popular

sport is rugby.

During this tour we visited the oldest museum in the UK

– Ashmolean Museum. We could see a lot of drawings by

Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael there. The

Museum also contains ancient monuments, such as

papyri and Greek sculpture.

Then we went to one of the courtyards of the university, to

admire the medieval architecture. The exact date of

founding a university is not known. Among college

graduates, there are 46 Nobel laureates, 25 prime ministers

of Great Britain and many heads of state.

In Oxford, there were many famous people. Some of them

were Lewis Carroll and J.R.R. Tolkien. Lewis Carroll

graduated mathematics at Oxford. He is the author of the

bestselling book - Alice in Wonderland. J.R.R. Tolkien

worked in the department of the Ministry of Labour,

Oxford, where he also lectured on the topics of philology.

There he also began to write The Hobbit and Lord of The

Rings.

After that we visited the part of the Bodleian

Library - main library of the University of Oxford. It was

founded in 1602. It holds over 7 million books located in

nine sections with different topics. We could see there

valuable manuscripts. Then we had an hour of free time.

The place of our meeting was Carfax

Tower which is the part of a church

demolished in 1896. It is the old city

centre of Oxford. On one of the walls of

Carfax Tower there is an original clock.

S MADAME TUSSAUDS

Madame Tussauds is a wax museum in London. It was founded by wax

sculptor Marie Tussaud. Madame Tussauds is now major tourist attraction

in London. We can find there historical and royal figures, film stars, pop

stars, world leaders, sports stars and infamous murderers.

Figures in Madame Tussauds are counterparts of real

people. They often come to this museum to see their

own wax figure and take photo with them. But not only

them. Ordinary people are interested in the attraction

as well. They take photos with wax stars, hug them,

smile at them, kiss them and do a lot of strange things

standing next to their favourite star.

Making wax figures is a really difficult thing.

You have to be concentrated, accurate and

unerring. You can’t make mistakes and disperse

yourself while working. Wax sculptors work all

day creating a new wax figure. Everything must

be perfect, because if one thing fails, the

whole figure is damaged.

It’s surprising that in Madame Tussauds there are not

only wax figures of famous people. There are many

wonderful attractions which make this place a bit

terrific. The first attraction can bother you, because it is

connected with fear. It’s a walk among ghosts, vampires

and zombies ! ;) You can get really scared, so be careful !

The next attraction isn’t frightening, far from it - it is

very pleasant and interesting . It is connected with wax

figures as well, but it differs from previous attractions in

this museum, because it’ a very special film… If you want

to know more about those attractions, check them

personally, just pack up your suitcase and fly to London to

Madame Tussauds!

show You my projects and photos of London’s shopwindows.

A lot of colours and

patterns, dresses and skirts,

casual and elegance in one!

THIS IS IT!!!

60’s fashion comes

back! Pastel colours, a

lot of flowers!

Should I emphasize

feminine shapes? I say

YES!!!

Do not be afraid to mix

colours boldly – this

year everything is

allowed!

My motto for this year?...

Don’t worry, be colorful!!!

Day 2

Today we’ve just arrived here, Margate. The trip was very exhausting and everyone is sleepy or really tired. We went for a walk to the center of Margate. Girls did some shopping in Primark and boys bought chips and ice cream. Then, we came back to Margate Youth Hostel and we unpacked our luggage. After dinner we had some time for ourselves in our rooms. Everybody was so tired that we went to beds at 10 p.m.!

Day 4

I’ve never thought that I’d meet Cheryl Cole, Daniel Raddclife, Johny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Miley Cyrus and other stars. It was possible only in Madame Tussauds Museum. In Science Museum I found out many interesting facts about myself! That’s an interactive museum so we could explore it by ourselves. I think that museums like that one are thoroughly better than traditional museums. After that, we were in Hyde Park and we walked down Oxford Street. Some girls even did shopping in shops situated there.

Day 3

London is great! Today we went for a trip to this lovely city. We saw many fascinating monuments: Big Ben, Tower Bridge, Westminster Abbey, Backingham Palace, London Eye, Houses of Parliament, National Gallery, st. Martin in the Fields Church. We walked down the famous street ‘Downing Street’, where Prime Minister (David Cameron) lives and down Soho- an area of London, which is famous for its night life. We were in China Town too. When we came back to Margate we had dinner and we did some language exercises. I’m really exhausted but really happy.

Day 5

Since we came back from Oxford I’ve been sure that I want to study there. That city is so fascinating for me. Small buildings are so beautiful there. There are many shops there, as well - what’s important for me. Seeing the place where some scenes from Harry Potter were shot was incredible too.

Day 6

I don’t want to come back to Poland! We were in Tideway School in Newheaven. Schools in England are so cool. Pupils attend cooking lessons, PE with trampolines and horse riding. In music class there are so many instruments: the pianos, the guitars, the drums etc. Drama lessons are really exciting too. By the way, New Heaven is a really beautiful city. Brighton is also nice, not only because of many shops. The beach is the best place there.

Day 7

Last night in England we spent in a hotel. It was so nice. Everyone liked the breakfast. We ate croissants, cereal with milk, toasts and we drank coffee or orange and apple juice. At noon we checked out and we went to a castle in Dover. It was a very fascinating experience. The castle is huge and really beautiful. Now we are waiting for our ferry. When we are on a ferry, our stay in England will end.

CRUNCH

On the fifteenth of November class IC, which I belong to, went to the theatre IMKA. We

saw a play entitled „Crunch”. It was a romantic comedy with actors from other

countries.

The play was about Adam and Eve who were working for God in Heaven and whose job was nameing

fruit. They both liked this work, but they didn’t like each other and they were arguing all along. One day

Adam found a very unique apple. It was very beautiful and it seemed to be very tasty so he wanted to

have this apple only for himself, but when he wasn’t looking, Eve ate a piece of this fruit. Adam got very

angry but then he ate a little piece too. Unfortunately, God saw it and he sent them to the Earth to find

another special apple. They fell asleep and when they woke up they were on the Earth. They met Isaac

Newton who was sitting under a tree. Then, an apple fell off from the tree and then he discovered the

law of gravity. Next, they left him because they had to find an apple but they met another man too. He

was an archer. He wanted Adam to take an arrow and a bow and shoot down an apple which was on

another youth’s head. Adam took the bow and shot down the apple. Eve was very proud of him. They

wanted to kiss each other but somebody stood in their way. It was John. He was juggling with apples.

They were talking with him for a while but then they fell asleep and when they woke up, they were not

together any more. When Eve woke up she saw seven little dwarfs who were standing near her. They

couldn’t talk to her for a very long time because they had to go, so they left her alone. She was

frightened but suddenly she heard a voice. It was the voice of a very bad man who wanted Eve to eat a

poisonous apple. He told her that if she ate the apple, Adam would love her. She didn’t want to eat this

at first. But then she sang a song and ate a piece of it. She fainted. At the same time Adam woke up too

and he found a tree with unusual apples. He took one of them an started to go through for Eve. When

he found her she was unconscious. He was very upset but then he kissed her and she came round. They

kissed each other and then they came back to Heaven. God was very proud of them and he wanted

them to work for him again but they didn’t want. They fell in love and wanted to stay on the Earth

forever.

In my opinion it was a very interesting play with a lot of humor, some romantic strand, and very

good acting. I liked it very much and I would love to see another plays in this theatre.
