■Konica Minolta signs its support for the UN’s “Global Compact”In December 2008, Konica Minolta signed our support for the "Global Compact", committing to the future of the global environment. The UN "Global Compact" is a strategic policy initiative proposed by the United Nations and designed to align companies around the world with “ten universally accepted principles” in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment, and anti-corruption.

■Introducing the Green Factory Certification SystemTo further realise our goal of Eco Vision 2050, Konica Minolta has introduced the Green Factory Certification System, a new method to comprehensively evaluate the impact on the environment from the production point of view. This system certifies a production base as a Green Factory if it passes evaluation standards in the fields of global warming, supporting a recycling society, and reducing the risk of chemical substances.

■Basildon Business Award 2009Konica Minolta Business Solutions (UK) Ltd. received the award for Environmental Awareness at the Basildon Business Award Ceremony on July 17, 2009 for its contribution towards environmental preservation.

■Konica Minolta’s three Chinese bases achieve Level 2 zero emissions

Konica Minolta is actively involved in the promotion of zero emissions. To attain our goal, we have established two achievement levels for zero emissions for our production bases. Three Chinese bases – Konica Minolta Business Technologies (Wuxi) Co. Ltd., Konica Minolta Business Technologies (Dongguan) Co. Ltd., and Konica Optical Products (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. – have earned the Level 2 zero emissions designation. In addition to meeting the Level 1 criteria of maintaining a resource recovery rate of 90% or higher and maintaining a final disposal rate of 5% or less, the three bases have cleared the stricter Level 2 criteria of reducing the volume of externally discarded waste by 30% per sales unit compared with the 2001 levels.

■Konica Minolta’s ongoing pursuit to meet global standardsIn addition to CO2 reductions, Konica Minolta complies with environmental laws and regulations throughout the world. Our efforts include the active use of recycled materials and restrictions of hazardous materials for our products.

■Our first milestone, “Medium-term Environmental Plan 2015”

In order to actualise “Eco Vision 2050”, we formulated our “Medium-term Environmental Plan 2015” as its first milestone. Already under way, our intent is to reduce CO2 emissions from our product’s lifecycle by 20% by 2015 (based on 2005 levels) based on four fundamental objectives: preventing global warming, supporting a recycling-oriented society, reducing the risk of chemical substances, and restoring and preserving biodiversity.

Konica Minolta’s Medium and Long-term Vision. Konica Minolta’s New, Environmentally-Friendly Technologies.

■CO2 reduction through energy savings

The first step in minimising CO2 emissions is reducing power consumption. Konica Minolta’s bizhub MFPs use Simitri high definition (HD) polymerized toners for low temperature fixing, and are equipped with an advanced sleep mode and energy-saving technologies to significantly minimise energy consumption in the office. As a result, the bizhub C452, for example, offers extremely low TEC* values with approximately 59% reduced power consumption over its predecessor (C450). bizhub C360’s TEC* values are approximately 64% less than its predecessor (C352) and easily surpasses surpasses the International Energy Star’s new standards. Through such achievements, these bizhubs provide significant reductions in CO2 emissions.

* TEC (Typical Electricity Consumption)The TEC value, determined by the International Energy Star program, represents an electrical product’s typical electricity consumption for one week during average office use. The calculation is based on the amount of energy used during five working days with repeated operations, in energy-saving and off modes, plus two non-working days in energy-saving and off modes.

■CO2 reduction through long-life consumables

Konica Minolta bizhub C360 series MFPs utilise separate developer and drum units for longer product life and better durability. By providing long-life consumables – from production, assembly, transport, disposal and recycling – we have managed to reduce the total amount of CO2 emitted over the product’s lifecycle. In addition, the adoption of smaller packaging boxes and use of easy-to-recycle separable blow bottles for our toner bottles are just some of the many ways we promote resource conservation.

■CO2 reduction through reduced paper and toner usage

Keeping paper and toner usage down is another step towards the reduction of CO2 emissions. Konica Minolta’s bizhub MFPs are available with PageScope Enterprise Suite, a complete MFP management system that provides secure operations and limits excessive output through user authentication. This software also provides detailed tracking and limiting of resource usage, thus reducing CO2 emissions and TCO. To further control paper and toner usage, bizhub MFPs also offer dual-sided, 2-in-1 and 4-in-1 printing functions. And, PC-FAX allows users to send outgoing faxes directly from their PCs, and allows incoming faxes to be viewed on the PC screen before they are printed – so that only the pages needed are printed.

●Separate developer unit and drum unitOn previous models, the drum cartridge and developer unit were integrated. This meant that both had to be replaced even when only one was worn out. The new developer and drum units for the bizhub C360 series are separated to optimise the replacement cycle and significantly extend the product life of each unit.

■“Eco Vision 2050”

Preservation of the environment has long been an essential part of Konica Minolta’s corporate strategy. In January 2009, we formulated our long-term environmental goal, “Eco Vision 2050”, which aims to reduce the amount of CO2 emissions from our product’s lifecycle by 80% by 2050 (based on 2005 levels). Furthermore, we strive to effectively use and recycle the Earth's limited resources, and work on the restoration and conservation of biodiversity.

The Konica Minolta Group has united to be in better harmony with the global environment by minimising CO2 emissions.
