ADRIANA in brief

• The project ADRIANA (ADvanced Reactor Initiative And Network Arrangement) has been proposed to setting up the network dedicated to the construction and operation of research infrastructures in support of developments for the European Industrial Initiative for sustainable nuclear fission.

• The project define the needed research infrastructures, refurbishment or upgrading of existing facilities, irradiation facilities and hot laboratories or construction of new ones.

• The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Atomic Energy Community’s (Euratom) Seventh Framework Programme FP7/2007-2011 under grant agreement n° 249687.

ADRIANA in brief

The Project is focused on following reactor systems and connecting technologies:

Sodium Fast Reactor (SFR)

Lead Fast Reactor (LFR)

Gas Fast Reactor (GFR, including very high temperature technologies)

and associated technologies:Instrumentation, diagnostics and experimental devices

Irradiation facilities and hot laboratories

Zero power reactors

Road map of research infrastructures.

ADRIANA Objectives• To strengthen links between parties involved in RD of new reactor systems

(Regulatory Bodies, utilities, research and technical support organisations, industry and engineering companies, governmental research organisations and universities) and industry.

• To share the experimental equipment and facilities as well as integrate partial research findings for the sake of new types of nuclear energy development.

• To use information available from other EURATOM FP7 projects (ELSY, ESFR, GCFR and others).

• To maintain communication with OECD and IAEA programmes, especially those that imply experimental research achieved outside the EU countries (e.g. Russia).

• To create conditions for efficient exchange of information and cooperation for improved communication in participating organizations.

Results• A survey of research disciplines and activities needed for the

development of the systems and technologies.

• A survey of the safety issues, research and activities needs for the safety assessment of the future reactor systems

• Specifications of infrastructures and experimental devicesrequired to face the major challenges identified.

• A survey of existing facilities, evaluation of possibilities of their use and/or upgrade, needs of construction of new facilities.

• The upgrade of existing facilities and construction of new ones will be phased in time and consolidated in an infrastructure roadmap on a trans-national basis.

Main Stages

Month 4: Preliminary reports describing the present situation and future needs.

Month 6: Map of the existing research infrastructure and list of research projects.

Month 12: Project update and project seminar.

Month 14: Reports on future needs and infrastructure road map.

Month 15: Evaluation of existing research infrastructures for long-term vision of sustainable energy.

Month 18: Project final report, Roadmap proposal for building knowledge and facilities needed for new nuclear energy systems development.

Advisory and End User Group

• The Advisory and End-User Group – specified in Annex I (DoW) to the ADRIANA Grant Agreement - will be set up within the Project to represent the interests of end-users in the Project.

• Its “End-User’s” part will consist of skilled managers and representatives of potential users of the research infrastructure - research institutes and industry. In the “Advisory” part representatives of academic sector, regulators IAEA, NEA experts and ESNII members will be assembled.

• The AEUG group will be set up as soon as possible after the beginning of the Project.
