DESCRIPTION

The digital race facts from Mercedes Petronas GP that we published for the Japanese GP proved so popular, that I thought I'd share the team's preview document for the new Yeongam circuit in Korea as we get ready for this weekend's grand prix.

“It will be an exciting challenge to race at

the new Korean circuit. It looks great from

the pictures that we have seen recently and I

hope that the asphalt holds up as it has only

been put down very recently. It is always in-

teresting to learn a new circuit and generally

I get up to speed quickly so I’m looking for-

ward to the weekend.”

“Finally this year we are going to a circuit

which is not only new for me but for all of

the drivers. Korea will be a very interest-

ing country to see and even if the track has

only just been finished in time, I am confi-

dent that everything will be fine. I am very

much in favour of new races and I think it is

a benefit for all of us in the sport. It should

not be too complicated to learn the layout

and we are used to adapting quickly to new

circumstances. We had quite a good race in

Japan last weekend and are hoping that we

can move forward again and put on a good

show at the first race in Korea.”

“We are very pleased to be visiting Korea

next week and are looking forward to the ex-

perience of racing in a new country for For-

mula One. It is important for the future of our

sport that we continue to expand our global

fan base therefore we are very pleased that

the venue is ready in time after some uncer-

tainty. We have been preparing for the new

Korean circuit back at the factory with work

on our simulator so we have a good idea of

what to expect but as always with a new

track, it will be an interesting challenge.”

“The first Korean Grand Prix will be a com-

pletely new experience for everybody involved

in Formula One and our team welcomes this

new race onto the calendar. The organisers

have had a challenging period of time to get

the new facilities complete according to the

initial plan but everything seems to be ready

now. We are looking forward to an excit-

ing first race at this new track in Yeongam

where we can hopefully continue to get the

maximum from our current technical pack-

age, as in the last races, and score additional

points.”

After the 1988 Summer Olympics at Seoul

and the 2002 FIFA World Cup which had

been co-hosted with Japan, Formula One will

be the third international sporting highlight in

Korea.

The Korean Grand Prix will be the seventh

Formula One event in Asia after the grands

prix in Japan, Malaysia, Bahrain, China, Sin-

gapore and Abu Dhabi.

The 5.6 kilometre long circuit is located in

the South Jeolla region, once a place for po-

litical and religious dissidents. Today, this

region about 400 kilometres away from Ko-

rea’s capital Seoul attracts more and more

tourists. The race track built at the sea is sur-

rounded by a beautiful countryside with sce-

nic mountains on one side and picturesque

islands on the other.

The Yeongam circuit has been designed by

the experienced German race track architect

Hermann Tilke. Constructions began in 2007

whilst the opening ceremony had been held

on 4 September 2010. The 5.6km lap offers

18 corners and the grandstand seat up to

130,000 spectators. In addition, like in Abu

Dhabi the infrastructure offers a state-of-the-

art business park as well as leisure facilities.

Team history

The return of the Silver Arrows in the 2010

Formula One World Championship with the

new MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Formula One

Team begins the latest chapter in the proud

116 year history of motorsport success for

Daimler and Mercedes-Benz.

The Silver Arrows were born on 3 June 1934

when Manfred von Brauchitsch won the Eifel-

rennen at the Nürburgring at the wheel of a

Mercedes W25. The car’s white paintwork

had been sanded down to meet the weight

requirements and the car raced in the silver

colour of its aluminium body.

On 4 July 1954, the Silver Arrows returned

for the first time: Juan Manuel Fangio drove

his W196 streamliner to victory in the French

Grand Prix at Reims which he won ahead of

his team mate Karl Kling. It was the first For-

mula One race win for Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes-Benz has been a force in motor

sport since 1894. The first four cars home

in the race from Paris to Rouen on 22 July in

that year were powered by a 954cc V2 en-

gine designed by Gottlieb Daimler. This victo-

ry set the ball rolling and in subsequent dec-

ades, the marque won countless races. For

the Nice-Salon-Nice race of 1901, Daimler’s

cars were entered under the name Mercedes

for the first time, named after the daughter of

the Daimler importer and racing driver, Emil

Jellinek. The event was won by the Mercedes

of the German driver Wilhelm Werner.
