Who are we?
The Kowethas is a Registered
Charity no. 1065527. Our aim is to
promote the use of the Cornish
language in everyday life. We
publish books and run events to
help people add a bit of Cornish
into their lives. We help
communities to discover the
language, run language taster
sessions and social gatherings. Our
volunteers also teach and learn
the language themselves.
Facebook, newsletters and Twitter
are used to publicise our events.

Heritage Lottery Funding
for its Taves an Tir
Project
Taves an Tir (The Tongue of the Land) is an
exciting new community project which aims to
engage local people in understanding the rich
heritage of Cornish language found in field, place
and family names. The project will enable
discovery of local history, enhancing perceptions
of belonging and community and feelings of
identity and sense of place; making stories of the
past accessible to modern adults and children.

Summer is Hav in Cornish and Winter is Gwav but in the Celtic year Summer starts at the
beginning of May (Mis Me) and Autumn starts in August (Mis Est) when harvesting starts.
September’s name is Mis Gwynngala which means the month of white straw
A Cornish rhyme: Eus keus? Eus po nag eus? Mars eus keus, dro keus. Mar nyns eus keus
dro pyth eus. (Is there cheese? Is there or isn’t there? If there is cheese, bring cheese. If there
isn’t cheese bring whatever there is). See how fast you can say it.

For the first time in Cornish…
Tintin heads off to Scot-
land!
Tintin and his faithful dog Milik come
across two aviators in dire straits… As the
bumbling detectives Bray and Brea follow
their own noses, Tintin decides to follow
Milik’s more dependable nose and heads
off after a bunch of international money
forgers. Escaping with his life after being
shot, Tintin faces further close calls as he
unearths clues which lead him to Scot-
land. This is where he discovers the dark
legend of the monster Goedhvil, incarcer-
ated within the ruins of a’ Chreag Dubh
castle on the Ynys Dhu (Black Isle). Ignor-
ing any monstrous legends, Tintin and
Milik take a boat to the island to chal-
lenge the legend that lies ahead…

This two-year project will cover three areas of Cornwall; Lanivet towards the east, Heamoor in the west, and the Tolgus area of Redruth. We're launching the project in Lanivet with a fish and chip supper hosted by Cornish language group Heudh yn Hav at the Welcome Stranger at 7.30pm on 22 July, followed by Cornish music and songs at The Lanivet Inn on the same evening. Then there’ll be a place names pub quiz in August, an informal seminar in September, before we move the project on to Heamoor and Tolgus. These events are open to anyone to attend, so please join us. For the fish and chip supper on 22 July contact Sally Mollard at [email protected] or call her on 01579 321600 to book a place. There is no need to book to attend the pub events so come along, meet Cornish speakers of all levels, and help us launch Taves an Tir! Agas gweles ena! See you there!
