Year 6 Students Graduate

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our Year 6 students on completing their final year of primary schooling with a simply stunning Graduation Evening on Wednesday 9th December. The night was a wonderful celebration of their time at primary school and K.P.S. in particular. To see the girls and boys dressed so beautifully and perform their Year 6 Graduation Song, dance the Pride of Erin with their dance partners and then significant adult was simply marvellous. Thank so much to our Year teachers – Jenny, Christine and Craig as well as all the other K.P.S. staff who assisted in any way to make it such a memorable night. A huge ‘THANK YOU’ to the small but dedicated hard working band of parents who decorated the Gym and the Quadrangle for the Graduation event. While many students were recognised for their efforts over the year, our Year 6 group has as a whole been fantastic – certainly one of our best groups in recent years. They are a credit to themselves and

their family and will certainly be missed by us all.

To see the personal, academic, social and emotional growth in them has been very pleasing to see. We look forward to following their progress in the years to come. They have all performed the many roles associated with being a Year 6 student at KPS with diligence, commitment and enthusiasm. In particular, I would like to acknowledge their efforts with Peer Mediation, Action Stations and many different Assembly roles during the year. I wish them all the best of luck as they prepare themselves for the next stage of their

education at their various secondary colleges in 2016.

To the students and families who are finishing their formal association with KPS, thank you for your support of your children and our school. We look forward to following these students and

their families’ progress in the future.

Buildings & Grounds

In 2016, there will continue to be updating of our buildings and grounds. Projects planned include the replacing of the top of the timber garden retaining walls around the quadrangle as well as the tiered seating outside the Gym, extending the covered way to the entrance of the Senior building, repaint some sections of the Library building not done prior to the centenary of that building in 2012, some tree pruning and the usual maintenance of gardens and our play equipment pits. I would like to thank the other members of our very active 2015 Buildings & Grounds Committee - Jodie Olden, Kam Whyte, Andrew Newton, Lance Kibble, Ben Grabham, Simon Brady, Michelle Villinger and Nathan Pirouet together with our

School Council for their support of all our proposed projects.

Student Leadership

Our group of 2015 Year 6 Student Leaders have done an exceptional job this year. They have accepted every challenge and adapted to their roles with confidence and enthusiasm. I would especially like to thank Jorja, Jordan, Jamillah, Mitchell, Erin, Byron, Ellie N, Aaron, Zoe, Jay, Ellie S. and Riley as well as our J.S.C. leaders – Jade, Ari, Belle, Patrick Boys, Mackenzie and Patrick Bier

for their efforts in 2015.

I would like to acknowledge the role that our School Captains Jorja Whyte and Jordan Thomas have played this year. They have performed their roles with confidence and enthusiasm and always represented our school terrifically. I would like to wish them both the

best of luck in their futures and thank them for their efforts this year!

Many of our Year 5 students have been part of the selection process for our 2016 Student Leadership positions. Those who nominated themselves for these positions have completed applications, sought references from referees, spoken in front of their peers about why they want to be a leader and many have also had interviews for the various positions. We had nearly 40 students apply for the 14 positions and the short-listing of applicants was a difficult process. Many will have to be part of an interview process in front of Year 5 teachers, our School Captains and Vice Captains as well as Mr Pirouet and myself. The 2016 Student Leaders will be announced to our school community at our final Assembly next Thursday 16th December. Whether ultimately successful or unsuccessful in gaining of our leadership positions, there are many other ways in which all our Year 6 students have leadership opportunities. We look forward to seeing all our Year 6 students step-up to meet such challenges

and new opportunities.

Transition

On Tuesday, our school had children coming and going as part of the state-wide Transition Day. Our Year 6 students were attending their 2016 secondary colleges, while our 2016 Prep students came to school for their final transition session before commencing school properly at the end of January next year. Our Year 1-5 students also enjoyed their afternoon when they got to ‘move up’ to their 2016 class and meet their 2016 class teacher. There were many, many excited students eagerly now looking forward to the start of the 2016

school year.

Lulu

This year our Year Prep and 1 classes have had the experience of learning a Language Other Than English and at K.P.S. this language has been Mandarin. We have been fortunate to have our Mandarin sessions delivered by a very fluent-speaking Mandarin teacher – Lulu. Sadly, this week has been Lulu’s last week with us before she moves on to other projects next year. We would like to thank her for

her efforts and wish her the best of luck with future endeavours.

Next Week

Next week is our final week of school for 2015 and boy, this year has gone quickly! Even next week will be hectic I’m sure with our usual Assembly on Monday morning seeing the drawing our Parents & Friends Christmas Raffle winner. The wheelbarrow is choc-a-block with goodies and I’m sure any of the prizes will be worth winning. The more tickets you buy, the more chances you have of winning! Tuesday, 15th December will be our Class Parties Day. Also on Tuesday, our Year 4 students, staff and parents will have their annual Bike Hike from Leongatha to Koonwarra. We wish them good luck with their bike hike. Our final Assembly for the year will be held on Thursday morning at 9:00. This will be the students’ last day at school. The students will break-up for their Christmas vacation at

3:30 as staff will be at school on Friday, 18th December.

School Chaplain – Matt Stear

As we are quickly approaching the end of the year I would like to take this opportunity to thank our School Chaplain Mr Matt Stear for his dedication to the students and the wider school community. Matt has provided a wide range of students and parents with support and advice throughout the year. He is an excellent role model to the students and is always available to listen to their concerns and ideas. Matt does a fantastic job leading the school’s Bikes ‘R’ Us program as well as his pastoral care duties with our students.

Thanks Matt!

(Continued from page 2) JSC Dress Up Day

Our JSC held their final dress up day for the year today (Friday) with the theme of Summer Days. There were certainly some colourful creations on parade today. Monies raised will go towards supporting one of the local Korumburra families who sadly had their house destroyed in last weekend’s fire. Thank you to all our students & staff who dressed up today. Thank you also to Year 6

student Taleesha Kelly who suggested we support this family.

Spot the Spelling Mistake

Congratulations to all the people who have spotted my deliberate spelling errors in my reports! Special congratulations to Sophie McKenzie who is a regular prize winner. Maybe I’ll trick her next year. I look forward to trying to trick our great spelling error

spotters again in 2016!

Holiday Season I hope all our families have a wonderful and safe break over the coming weeks and that those who celebrate Christmas enjoy the festive season. I would like to thank everyone for their support during this year and look forward to another exciting year ahead for KPS, its students and families, in 2016.

Wednesday evening’sYear 6 Graduation was a smash!!!

Weeks of planning, practise and preparation culminated in a wonderful evening that the Class of 2015 and their families will never forget.

A huge thanks must go to those parents (ably led by Mrs Tania Findlay) for decorating both the school gymnasium and the quadrangle. Both

areas looked amazing with the twilight dance session under the lanterns a true highlight. We wish to thank old Twinkle Toes himself, Mr

Shorty Alger and his lovely wife Joan for their guidance and patience teaching the students the dance moves.

To our Year 6 parent community, thank you for supplying a truly tasty supper that was enjoyed by all.

To the Year 6 students, you should be so proud of all that you achieved on the night, from your silhouettes to your dance moves, you should

be commended for your outstanding efforts.

Each year we see a number of our families that leave our school. This year is no exception. Listed below are those families that no longer

have children attending Korumburra Primary School in the future. We wish them all the very best and thank them so much for their contribu-

Middle Department Report It has been a very busy year in LD 2-3, NK3, DM3, HA4 and BH4. We have learnt about and celebrated special events within our classroom

including Roald Dahl Day, National Wattle Day, Anzac Centenary, Movember, Remembrance Day, Life-Education and Science Week.

We have built bridges and conducted experiments. Written recipes, poems, recounts, reports, retells and narratives. Read novels, comics,

stories and news articles. Looked at different sounds with our Word Work and learned how to spell lots of words and what they meant.

Watched Behind the News episodes and became more aware of national and global events. Counted, added, subtracted, multiplied and

divided numbers. Measured length, mass, time, price, capacity and temperature.

Year 4 students have become familiar with their Netbooks and all students have been using PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher and Word to

enhance their knowledge of digital learning.

Students have been involved with camps, sports days, free-dress days and special assemblies. They have made new friends and become

more confident with their learning.

We wish everyone a happy and restful Christmas break and look forward to seeing everyone return for another busy year.

The end of the school year is fast approaching and the children are all very excited because Christmas is nearly here and it’s 14 sleeps until

Santa comes! However, there are still many things to do. Please could your child return any Library or take home books that may have slipped

under the bed! Class parties are on next Tuesday and a note will have gone home regarding this with a request of the plate of food your child

is to bring.

The Preps have been enjoying the great activities of the Junior Aquatic program, building up confidence within the water at the pool and

developing safety awareness and rescue skills. A big thank you to all our parents who have volunteered to help in and out of the pool and staff

who have provided these great learning experiences.

P E Report Junior Aquatic Education

This Friday is the third and final week of swimming for our Prep and Prep/One classes. Congratulations to all students involved. Many

students have been challenged by some of the activities and it is wonderful to see their confidence grow in such a short space of time.

I would sincerely like to thank all the volunteer parents who helped either in the pool or with dressing students! A special mention must go to

Jan Legg, Kim Fowles and Sharon Jones who made themselves available each Friday over the six weeks. The program could not run

without this valuable assistance!

Sporting Attire

Notes recently went out to those students who I had recorded as still having sports clothing at home! However sometimes there is the odd

jacket or shirt that may not have been noted. Could students please have a final check at home for anything that may belong to the school

sports cupboard!

Merry Christmas

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those parents, friends, ex-students and grandparents who have assisted me in any way this

year with the various sporting activities. Your contribution to the sporting program at KPS is truly appreciated.

I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy holiday!
