THE GOAL OF THE PROGRAMThe Science, Technology & Cultural program (STC) is an
effort to provide youth in high poverty communitieswith an invaluable educational experience to broaden
their cultural awareness, understanding, appreciation, and science content knowledge through the use of
technology.
PARTNERSHIP & COLLABORATION
•Universities (UMSL- COE/ TLC, South Africa University ), Technology Community Centers (YFC, Computer Village), Urban and Suburban Public Schools (US: Yeatman and Parkway, SAF: Zwelethu, Vukuzakhe and Kwamgaga; Mali: Kalanso E.E.), Private Schools (Central Catholic), Teachers/ Instructors/ Students/ Administrators and Parents
PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONProgram instructors and students in St. Louis-
Missouri, Mali and South Africa participate in a 2 year-long cultural exchange, using a joint science &
technology curriculum. In St. Louis, approximately 35 students from various middle schools meet at a local technology community center and schools once a week for two hours of instruction with a University of Missouri-
St. Louis graduate student and some local teachers.
*All 1st year St. Louis participants receive a refurbished computer through The Youth & Family Center or Computer Village

CULTURETECHNOLOGY
Learning CULTURE Through:• Music & songs - Jambo bwana song, African music• Customs, traditions, holidays- cultural activities & research• Understanding weather, geography, and environmental similarities/differences between the countries-science activities• Language- Kiswahili, Bambara, English and Zulu• Writing - Penpal letters and emails• Projects - shared through the website and email•----------------------------------------------------------------Science and Technology work together to teach students about cultures that are different than their own

Project-based science activities and experiences in: •Geography
• Weather and Climate• Environment, Ecology, & Conservation
• Earth Science (Volcanoes and Earthquakes)• Food and Health (e.g. Infectious disease)

ASSETS OF THE PROGRAM
•Students and teachers learn about various African cultures through science and technology and are excited
about their learning!•Technology-rich experience for urban students who may
not have otherwise received such an opportunity.•Unique Cross-Cultural Exchange.
•Partnership between a university and the local community. •Students present artifacts in a Final program symposium
and Graduation Ceremony (students receive certificates) in a state-of-the-art University Technology Center.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPLEMENTATION
•Strong support and commitment from project partners
•Reliable technology and adequately trained technology coordinators
•Regular communication with African counterparts•Funding (program supplies, instructors)
•Diversified curriculum & activities to address the needs of various ability levels

1. Integrate the program into school-based: • Science Programs• Technology courses• Inter/trans disciplinary approaches
2. Two year program consisting of an interchangeable strand A/B program
3. Scaleable multinational project including countries in sub-Sahara Africa, Central and South America, Pakistan and Ukraine.

History of Molobalini• Djibi-n’tiTraoré était un Bozo
(pêcheur) qui habitait très loin de l’eau. Un jour il dit à ses enfants d’ aller chercher sa pirogue au fleuve. Les enfants arrivés au fleuve fatigués ont tiré la pirogue jusqu’à la maison.
• La pirogue laissa une trace derrière elle et c’est par cette trace que l’eau commença àcouler jusqu’ à la maison du Bozo. Il nomma ce marigot Molobalini (l’effronté)
