From the Headmaster

In Judaism, there is a blessing for everything.

There’s a blessing for different foods, and for hearing good news and bad news, and a blessing when one sees an extraordinary scene in nature. So, what is the blessing one recites upon completion of a successful year of fundraising for a Jewish day school? I’ve searched and haven’t found such a blessing. So, I suggest that we borrow an existing blessing that is recited in Sephardic congregations after one completes a Torah honor. We should say to all those who raised money and to all those who contributed money, “Hazak u-Barukh”—May you be strengthened and may you be blessed.

This year’s Annual Report reflects an outstanding year of fundraising at Krieger Schechter Day School. Through the generosity of parents, grandparents, alumni and alumni parents, faculty and friends, KSDS raised over $950,000. This commitment to our students allows for continued excellence and achievement that is the hallmark of a KSDS education. I want to thank everyone who played a role in our remarkable success.

The KSDS Annual Appeal—our most important ongoing development effort—reached almost $200,000, thanks in large measure to our outstanding Annual Appeal committee chaired by Jane Sopher. We are most grateful to the Malis family whose three-year challenge grant led to many new and increased gifts.

Like all other independent schools, demand for financial aid increased dramatically this year. The Golf and Tennis Classic is our primary source of annual scholarship monies outside of endowment, and the school is thankful to all those who supported this event. The success of the Classic would not have been possible without the dedication and optimism of Gary Attman.

I would also like to recognize the exceptional development team, led by chair Janine Frier, whose efforts moved KSDS forward in leaps and bounds this year. Through their work, the first reunion for alumni parents was held. The Schechter Re-Connector inaugurated the school’s commitment to remaining connected with all KSDS alumni and their families. I thank as well KSDS Board Chair Robert Brown and Samuel Moskowitz, who serves as our Vice-Chair. It’s hard to imagine what KSDS would be like without the hard work and dedication of the many people who support our fundraising efforts.

And how blessed we are to have such an outstanding development team! Our most sincere appreciation to Sarah Fried and Alison Wielechowski, our development professionals, and to Laurel Freedman, who oversees development efforts for the entire Chizuk Amuno community, and to Marci Scher, our development assistant. Our gratitude as well to the leadership of Chizuk Amuno Congregation for their ongoing support of KSDS!

My thanks go to all of you acknowledged in this report for your support and commitment to KSDS. Your willingness to share your time and resources makes a profound impact on our school. I am truly grateful. Hazak u-Barukh!

From the Development Chair

Each year our school community strives to do more. To do more with our education and outside the classroom experiences; to do more with our sports program; to do more with technology offered; to do more with creative arts. Though tuition revenue provides much of the schools operating costs, the rest (over 15%) must come through other sources of income. As a community we rely on the generosity of our parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends. Through our annual appeal, designated commitments, grants, and endowment funds KSDS raises almost a million dollars each year.

Designated commitments, in-kind giving, and endowments provide the school a chance to try new and innovative technologies, fund exciting academic programs beyond the scope of the budget, and provide for ongoing needs including tuition assistance. Gifts this past year have allowed KSDS to:

Carson Scholars Fund Award Krieger Schechter Day School is grateful to Bonnie and Neil Katz for establishing a Carson Scholars Fund Award for Krieger Schechter. This honor is given every year to a seventh or eighth grader who excels academically and displays dedication to community service. The winner receives a $1,000 scholarship to be used to help pay for college. Both the winning student and KSDS receive special recognition through the Carson Scholars Fund for this achievement. The Carson Scholars Fund is a non-profit organization founded in 1994 by Johns Hopkins pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson and his wife Candy. The Fund recognizes students who strive for academic excellence and demonstrate a strong commitment to their community. Since its inception, the Carson Scholars Fund has awarded over 3,400 scholarships and has scholars in 26 states.

Paul J. Fineman Fund for Ethics Education Krieger Schechter Day School is grateful for the generosity of the Paul J. Fineman Fund for Ethics Education and the support of Suzanne F. Cohen in bringing education to our faculty, parents and students over the past three years on the importance of social inclusion.

From the Chair of Golf and Tennis

The KSDS 8th Annual Golf and Tennis Classic, held at Chestnut Ridge Country Club on Monday, June 1st was a tremendous success! Through the continued generosity of local and national businesses, and KSDS-CAC friends and families, we were able to raise over $60,000 dedicated specifically to financial assistance. This will enable many of our students to continue to receive the quality education that KSDS provides.

Tennis Chair Bonnie Katz and Volunteer Chair Cheryl Abrams played a very large role in coordinating all of the details, making sure this year was the best ever.

On behalf of KSDS, we want to thank everyone who has supported and continues to support this very important fundraiser. From the Annual Appeal Chair

As we began the Annual Appeal last September, we faced a daunting challenge of increasing the much-needed unrestricted annual appeal dollars, as well as increasing the number of donors to our campaign. KSDS set an ambitious goal of raising almost 15% more then we did in the past campaign. Through the tireless efforts of the appeal committee and the commitment of Dr. Schneider, the school surpassed our original goal. KSDS Annual Appeal raised almost $200,000 from 549 donors— a record-breaking campaign!

Our committee was often faced with the question, what is the annual appeal and what do these dollars allow KSDS to provide? Annual Appeal dollars represent unrestricted funds that KSDS uses to bridge the gap between the operating budget and the actual cost of running the school. These funds support the additional needs the school has, including:

•theafter-schoolsportsprogramforthemiddleschoolwhichgives the opportunity to all KSMS students to participate in an after-school team sport

Shelley and Ira Malis made a significant contribution to the KSDS Annual Appeal. They have committed to $100,000, over a three year period, to be used as matching funds for new and increased gifts.
